2024 is the Year of the Dragon. Of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac (生肖), the dragon is the only unreal one. But Chinese people love it so much for thousands of years. And they always say they’re the “descendants (后代) of the dragon”. But how much do you know about the animal? Does it have the same meaning in different cultures?

Both people in the east and west think dragons are like snakes. Now in China, we can still find records of dragons. For example, some ancient jade carvings (玉雕) look like snakes in a letter “C”. In the west, people see dragons as big snakes in the old book The Penguin Book of Dragons.

However, stories about dragons are very different between the East and West. Dragons in China have a horse-like head, a long body but no wings (翅膀). People think they are beautiful and smart. And they can also bring good luck. While dragons in the west have shorter bodies and big wings. They often mean bad luck. Some of them can even blow fire from their mouth. For example, the evil witch (邪恶女巫) Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty, can turn herself into a big dragon!

East or west, in the world of fantasy, the dragon will always play an important role!

【推荐1】Computers can injure (伤害)you. Most other injuries happen suddenly. For example, if you fall off a bike and break your arms, it happens very quickly. But computer injuries happen slowly.
You probably know how to ride a bike safely. Now learn to use a computer safely.
Your eyes
Too much light can injure your eyes, so never sit too close to a computer screen. Your eyes should be at least 50 centimeters(厘米)from the screen. Remember to look away from it sometimes. This gives your eyes a rest.
When you use a computer, the window should be on your left or your right. If it is behind you, the light will reflect on(反射)the screen. If the window is in front of you, the sun and the screen will both shine into your eyes.
Your hands and wrists
Hand and wrist injuries can happen because the hands and wrists are moved in the same way hundreds of times. If you use a keyboard for a long time, follow these three rules: 1)Rest your wrists on something. 2)Keep your elbows(肘)at the same height as the keyboard. 3)Stop sometimes and exercise your hands, wrists and fingers in a different way.
Your back
Some people sit for many hours in front of a computer. If you sit in the wrong way, you can injure your back or your neck. So you should sit with your back straight. The top part of the screen should be in front of your eyes. Your forearms, wrists, hands and the upper part of your legs should all be parallel(平行)to the floor. 【推荐2】Mars(火星) is the fourth planet from Sun. It is home to both the highest mountain and the deepest, longest valley(山谷) in the solar system(太阳系). Olympus Mons, the highest mountain on Mars, is about 27 kilometers high, about three times as tall as Qomolangma. And the deepest valley on Mars reaches as deep as 10 kilometers and runs east west for about 4, 000 kilometers, about one fifth of the distance around Mars and close to the width of Australia.

Mars is much colder than Earth because it’s farther away from Sun. The highest temperature can reach 20℃ while the lowest can be as low as -140℃. Just like Earth, Sun gives Mars seasons. However, the seasons that Mars experiences are more extreme than Earth’s. For example, when Mars is farthest from Sun, the southern part of Mars experiences a very long and cold winter, about six months on Earth.

Mars lies farther from Sun than Earth does, so the Red Planet has a longer year—687 days compared to 365 for our home world. However, the two planets have similar day lengths, 24 hours and 40 minutes for Mars and 24 hours for Earth.

Mars is far from an easy planet to reach but many countries like the USA, Russia, China and Japan are always trying to send people there. Robots have got the tickets to Mars and it’s believed that Man will get the tickets by the 2030s, although it still remains a big challenge now. And scientists say it will take at least six months for people to travel to Mars.

Is there life on Mars? We don’t know.

We’re sure that people on the earth are not able to live on Mars. People need oxygen to breathe. There is almost no oxygen on Mars.

Living on Mars would be like living on a very high mountain. There would be little air.

The temperature might be 50 degrees above zero at noon and 140 degrees below zero at night. Many people think there may be plants on Mars. We know that on Mars there is carbon. This is a kind of material found in all plants and animals on the earth. Through a telescope, Mars looks red. In some places, it seems gray. At times the gray color turns gray-green, then brown, then gray again. The gray-green color may be a kind of plant life changing color with the seasons.

Will men go to Mars one day? If they do, they must take their own oxygen, food and clothing with them.

1. There is enough oxygen for us to live on Mars.
2. It’s too hot in the daytime and it’s too cold at night on Mars.
3. We can find carbon in all plants and animals on the earth.
4. Sometimes Mars looks blue.
5. If one day we can go to Mars, we must take enough oxygen, food and clothing with us.
