Celebrating Chinese New Year with Chinese friends can be great, but because of the culture gap, it can be really easy to give the wrong gift for Chinese New Year. Here are five things you should not give as a Chinese New Year gift.
Wallet—Loss of fortune
In traditional Chinese culture, giving a wallet as a gift means giving away all your money and you might lose all your finances (财源) and luck. However, it is no problem to give a wallet to your family member who already share your financial accounts and money.
Handkerchiefs—Saying goodbye forever
People generally give handkerchiefs at the end of a funeral (葬礼). Handkerchiefs are a symbol of saying goodbye forever. Giving someone a gift like this may suggest that you are saying goodbye forever.
Umbrellas—Break up
Umbrellas are a bad idea to give as gifts, because the Chinese word for “umbrella” sounds like the word for “breaking up”. Giving somebody an umbrella can mean that you feel your friendship has fallen apart.
Sharp objects—Cut off relationship
Giving anything sharp, such as a knife or scissors, is also a bad idea, as it’s thought to cut off the relationship. A common Chinese saying “one cut and it is in two parts” means the end of a relationship between people.
Shoes—Evil
Shoes are a bad idea as a present for Chinese New Year because the Chinese word for “shoes” sounds exactly the word for bad luck or “evil”. On top of that, shoes are something that you step on, and they are considered as derogatory (贬义的) gifts.

Chopsticks are pairs of sticks with the same length that have been used in most of eastern Asian countries for over 3,000 years. According to the history, the first chopsticks appeared in China over 5,000 years ago. During the Spring and Autumn Period, chopsticks made of copper(铜) and iron developed over a long period of time. Later the chopsticks with coating came in the Han Dynasty. Then gold and silver chopsticks followed. Different materials have been used to make chopsticks until now, among which the most valuable—ones are made of ivory and green stone. Those can show how rich the owners are.
It was said that silver chopsticks would turn black at once if they touched poisoned(有毒的) food(but we know it was wrong today), so in history many emperors used silver chopsticks to check whether the food was bad for them or not before eating. Chopsticks are also regarded as gifs to others. In China, chopsticks are traditionally given to a daughter when she marries to hope that they will have a child very soon, because the pronunciation of word “chopsticks” in Chinese is like “quick child”. Also, people often believe chopsticks have something to do with good luck. So many families will choose to put new chopsticks on the table at dinner on New Year’s Eve as a way of wishing for good luck while dropping chopsticks is a sign of bad luck.
It’s believed that using chopsticks can increase fingers’ flexibility(灵活性). Some experts also find that it can improve memory. Many westerners, businessmen and tourists put their knives and forks beside the bowls and plates but choose chopsticks in China.

Zibo, the small city in East China’s Shandong Province, is nearly 6000 square kilometers, with a population of smaller than 4.8 million. The city was hardly known by people before, but now it has gone viral (走红) on Chinese social media (媒体) platforms recently. On each street, queues of customers outside the restaurants are more than a hundred meters. All hotels are fully booked days before. Until late February, this small city was unknown to most people in China. Some college students attended a job fair in the city. They went to try the barbecue and took videos of themselves while they were enjoying the food and posted them on to the social media. As a result of going viral, millions of youths (年轻人) from across the country started to pour into Zibo to try its famous barbecue.
One special thing in Zibo is that diners (食客) can have their own little stove (炉子) on their table. Another important reason is that the barbecue is at a very good price, even after it went viral. Local government encourages more people to come to Zibo. They launch two dozens of “special barbecue trains” and add 21 bus lines so that tourists can “get on the bus to rest, get off to eat”. The city plans to hold a barbecue festival around the May Day holiday.
