2024 is the 21st year of a free library in a mountain village in Shaoyang, Hunan Province. 77-year-old Yang Guangxun started the “Ziqiang Library”.
Yang was born in this village and became a book lover when he was very young. He owned over 300 books at home. When he retired in 2002, he and his wife sometimes went back to the village for they didn’t need to work any longer. Learning village children often had trouble finding enough books to work, Yang decided to give away all his books to start the library in August 2003. He hoped everyone in the village will make their lives rich and colorful through reading.
Over the past 21 years, Yang has given away plenty of money to buy more books for the library. With 6 reading rooms, it now stores over 54,000 books and has 30,000 visitors every year. Since Yang and his wife don’t always live in the village, they invite relatives and friends to work as volunteers and take care of the library. There are 16 volunteers working in the library all year round as the library is open every day, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Thanks to the library, many villagers fall in love with reading, and many students get great grades or get into universities. They all think reading is the best thing in the world.

I have always been fascinated by the animal world. Recently, I read a novel about animals called A Lion’s Traveling. Chinese writer Shen Shixi wrote it.
The book tells the story of five male lions. They are driven out of their home and begin their adventure (冒险). Unluckily, one is hurt by a giraffe. Another is killed by a hunter. The third one dies during a fight for water with a rhino. The fourth lion drowns (淹死). Only the youngest one, named Red Ribbon, is still alive. After going through many difficulties, he finally becomes the lion king.
The story shows the love and care between friends, the life and death faced by brothers, the determination to deal with challenges, and the love for life. The fact that the young lion finally becomes the king teaches me a great lesson: Those who cannot defeat (打败) you will make you stronger. Everyone will face lots of difficulties during their lifetime. We should learn to stay strong and continue to find our better selves.
The book is filled with exciting details about the life of lions. Together with vivid pictures, it gives readers an immersive (沉浸的) experience. You can not only read the great story but also learn a lot about the animals in the real world. I highly recommend it!

They think volunteers put in the effort and get nothing in return. But actually, volunteering is a job full of challenges and rewards (奖赏). It also can offer you chances.
People can do different volunteer activities, such as working at hospitals schools or community centers as well as volunteering at animal shelters (保护区), environmental organizations, or charities. For example, you can volunteer as a panda keeper. The main jobs include looking after the pandas, giving them food and cleaning their houses.
Also, volunteer activities can be done alone or as part of a group. Some people prefer to volunteer alone, while others enjoy working with other members to achieve a common goal. No matter how they volunteer, all volunteers share a common goal—to help others and make a difference to the world.
In addition, if you have no time go in person to an organization to volunteer, think about volunteering by doing wok online such as teaching Chinese to foreigners online.
Above all, volunteering is a way for you to give back to the community while you also develop basic social skills and acquire valuable experience. To help me with that task, Mrs. Pillar volunteered to come to the hospital and later to my house once a week. We began with basic maths skills. As time passed by, I made progress.
I remembered very vividly how she came to my home on Sundays, sat with me at the kitchen table, and threw different coins on the table. She asked me to show her 38 cents, 17 cents, 63 cents. It was challenging, but she also made it fun.
After a year and a half, I had progressed a lot, both in body and mind, to return to school. Seven years later, I graduated from the University of Texas at the top of my class.
As years went by, I always kept in touch with Mrs. Pillar. Unluckily, one day my parents told me that Mrs. Pillar had been in hospital because she suffered a stroke (中风).
Now it was my turn to help her. Mrs. Pillar lay in bed, unable to speak and know anybody around. I pulled some coins out of my pocket, dropped them on her bed, and asked her to show me 12 cents. The nurse thought that my action was very strange until one day Mrs. Pillar smiled happily as I began working with her-just as she had worked with me years before. She made progress every day and was moved out of ICU and finally out of hospital.
One day, I called to wish her a happy New Year. She spoke into the phone excitedly, “Happy New Year to you and your family, Michael. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.” I quickly said, “Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.”

My brother and I wanted to make something special as a gift for her new house. We thought we would surprise her and build a wooden deck (平台) in her little backyard.

Fifteen minutes later when we came over and opened the back door, to our surprise, our deck was gone! Someone had stolen it. Just then, Grandma’s neighbor Jenny came out and said, “Hey look! Someone built a deck in my back yard!”
“Oh no!” we cried. The houses looked so much alike that we had gotten mixed up!
