The natural world is full of colors, seen in humans, plants, and animals. Human skin comes in different shades (色块), which is influenced by sunlight, emotions, and health. When we feel strong emotions like anger or excitement, our skin can turn red as a result of increased blood flow to the face. Therefore, people often say “seeing red” when someone is angry.
Plants also use colors to survive. Flowers have bright colors to attract insects like bees, which help with pollination (授粉) by moving pollen from one flower to another. Bees can see colors we can’t, so they’re attracted to these bright flowers, which is important for the plants’ reproduction. Without bees, many plants would struggle to survive.
Animals also use colors for survival. Some change their fur or skin colors to blend in with their surroundings and avoid being seen by predators (捕食者). For example, the snowshoe hare changes its fur from brown in the summer to white in the winter to match the snow. Others use bright colors to warn predators to stay away.
In summary, colors play many roles in the natural world. They contribute to the beauty of our planet and are helpful for life to thrive. From the different tones of human skin to the bright colors of flowers and the pretending strategy of animals, the role of color in nature is fascinating and important.

Human skin can be many different colors and it changes with the sun, our feelings or our health for example. This is because of pigments(色素), which reflect light and make what the eye sees as colors. So, when we feel excited or angry, our heart can send more blood to the face and the pigments in the skin become red.
Plants also have pigments. Colors are important for them to live on. The bright colors of flowers catch the attention of insects, which then carry their pollen(花粉) from one flower to another. Bees can see colors we cannot, and they follow these to the inside of the flower. Without bees visiting flowers in this way, many plants would die out.
Animals also use colors for their own need. They protect themselves with different colors in order not to be seen by predators. The snowshoe hare, for example, a type of wild rabbit, changes colors with seasons for this reason. During summer it is a brown color, and in winter it is white so that it can hide in the snow. However, some animals use the color as a warning to make predators stay away. Bright colors such as yellow and red are often used in this way.
So, we can see that there may be many different reasons and uses for colors in the natural world. Some uses of colors in nature remain unknown, but one thing is for sure, colors not only make our planet beautiful but they are also necessary for our planet to live on.

Locusts (蝗虫) are very delicious food for birds, but itis not always easy for birds to catch them. That is not because locusts are good jumpers or runners. Is that because they are smarter than their enemies (敌人)? The answer is “no”. The reason is that the colors of locusts change with the colors of crops (庄稼). When crops are young, locusts look green. But when autumn comes, locusts change to the yellow and brown color as crops do.
Brown bears, tigers and other animals move quietly through forests. They can't be seen easily by their enemies. This is because they have the colors like the trees. For the same reason, polar bears are white like the color of snow. Butterflies and bees living among the flowers are colorful like flowers. Soil insects are mostly dark-colored and they live under the dark and wet soil. However, insects with colors different from plants can easily be found and eaten by others. In order tosurvive, they have to hide themselves in the daytime and come out only at night for their safety.
The ink fish in the sea can send out some very black ink when it faces danger. As the ink spreads over (喷洒), itsenemies will find themselves suddenly in a dark world. At the same time the ink fish swims away at once. That is how it keeps itself safe though it is not strong at all.

Dear Pretty Rubbish, an art event organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWFN) and digital media art company Blackbow, was held in Beijing. It looked at wasteful garbage and asked questions about the relationship between our lifestyles and our garbage.
“We hope that everyone who visited the show can think about how ‘useless things’ are produced, why they are tossed out, and whether ‘useless things’ are really useless”, said Cao Yujia, the design director at Blackbow.
Artists Zhou Yuxuan and Liu Yifan collected nylon cable ties, LED lights and plastic bottles from designers’ workshops to create a work where plastics, in the shape of cells, “grow” in a comer. There, the lights blink(闪烁) regularly just like “breathing”. When people walk near it, the work responds by showing light patterns, as if communicating with the visitors.
Speaking about the work, Zhou said: “It’s like some kind of communication between humans and plastics.”
Plastic has a life longer than almost any creature, taking centuries to break down. Though people think plastics damage the environment, they are a big part of our daily lives. “So we want to ask the question: Although the damage continues, is there a way for humans to reconcile (和解) with plastics?” said Zhou.

Have you told a lie?
Lying takes much more hard work for your brain to do than telling the truth.
Imagine you’re late for class and the teacher asks why and you decide to lie. So you say, “I had to stop by the library and pick up a book.” Your teacher asks, “The book I asked to read last week?” If you say yes, the teacher might ask to see the book. So you might say, “No. It was a different book.” You’re only two sentences into the lies, but you just give your brain a lot of extra(额外的) work.
The prefrontal cortex(前额皮质)is the part of the brain people use when they are lying.
Lying is even harder for young people.
A.Or she might expect you to read from it in class. |
B.Most of us have told a lie at one time or another. |
C.It would have been far easier just to have told the truth, “I got up late.” |
D.When lying, people have to make sure their story sounds real. |
E.That’s because the prefrontal cortex is not fully developed until age 25. |
F.That area takes care of short memory, planning, problem-solving and self-control. |

Canada (加拿大) is the biggest country in North America. It is so big that it reaches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Ottawa is the country’s capital.
Nearly all Canadians speak French, English, or both. People come from far-away countries to live in Canada. Together, all of these different people make Canada strong. Most Canadians live in big cities in the south of Canada. Few people live in the far north because the land is covered with ice and snow.
Some animals live only in the cold north, like polar bears and baby harp seals(竖琴海豹). They both have white fur to hide on the snow. Many animals in Canada move in winter and spring. Canada geese fly south every winter. They return in spring when it is warmer.
All across Canada, people celebrate winter. There are festivals for ice-skating and ice carving. There are dogsled (狗拉雪橇) races across the snow. The biggest winter festival is in Quebec City. You can visit an ice castle and play games there.

Dubai is home to the world’s tallest building and the world’s largest mall. Now it has just opened another record-breaking place—the deepest diving pool in the world. As part of the new Deep Dive Dubai, the pool is 60 meters deep. It has broken the record set by Poland’s Deepspot, which is over 45 meters.
The Deep Dive Dubai pool is filled with 14 million liters (升) of fresh water and is five times bigger than an Olympic swimming pool. Guinness (吉尼斯) gave it the “Deepest Swimming Pool for Diving” title on June 27, 2021. The pool is now open only to invited guests, but will open to the public later this year.
The indoor pool is housed inside a 1, 500-square-meter oyster-shaped (牡蛎形的) building. But the biggest star of Deep Dive Dubai is actually the pool’s underwater city. Divers can visit the lost city apartments and play underwater table football. The pool is also used as an underwater film-making factory—the largest of its kind in the area.
Deep Dive Dubai offers courses for both diving beginners and experienced divers. They can also visit the pool and the underwater city by themselves after a tour with one of the diving guides there. Some cameras have been fixed around the pool to ensure (确保) the safety of divers at every corner.
The oyster-shaped building also has a restaurant with large windows and TV screens, allowing non-diving families and friends to watch from dry land.
“There are quite a few diving pools in the world that are deep, but this one is so much more interesting,” Deep Dive Dubai director Jarrod Jablonski said. “There are so many things so it’s really not fair to call it a pool.”
