Very soon after Roberta wrote to the old gentleman, the three children were walking through the tunnel when they heard a cry.
“Hello!” Peter shouted. “Who’s there?”
“Help me,” a voice shouted back. “I can’t move.”
“That’s a boy’s voice,” Roberta said.
The children ran deeper into the tunnel. Before long, they came to a boy. He was lying on the ground.
“What happened?” Roberta asked him. “I was walking through the tunnel when I tripped. I think I’ve broken my leg.” “The 11:15 train is due (预定应到的) soon,” Peter said.“We must get you out of here.”
“I’ve been here for two hours,” the boy said. “I was on my way to the station to catch the train. It’s quicker through the tunnel than along the road.”
“It’s also more dangerous,” Roberta said.
“Oh, stop talking,” Peter said. “We’ve got to get him out. What’s your name?”
“Jim.”
“Come on then, Jim. Hold on to me,” Roberta said. “Peter and Phyllis will help you up.”
It was a difficult journey back to the beginning of the tunnel, but the children got there before the11:15 train did.
They took Jim home. Mother called for a doctor. The doctor said Jim needed to stay in bed for at least a month.
“Can he stay with us?” Peter said. “We’d love to have a friend our own age.”
“I don’t know,” Mother said. “We must find out what his grandfather wants.”
So Mother wrote a letter to Jim’s grandfather.
A few days later, the children were all sitting with their mouths open, looking at him when Jim’s grandfather came.
“You’re our old gentleman!” they exclaimed.
“That’s right,” he said. “And I got your letter, Roberta.”
“What letter?” Mother demanded.
“Roberta wrote to me about her father,” the old gentleman said. “I was not surprised by what she said. I have thought for a long time that he was innocent (无辜的). It was not possible that a guilty (有罪的) man could have such wonderful children.”
Two weeks later, Father came back home.

This afternoon when I was about to go there, the telephone rang. It was my husband, “Sorry, dear, but I have to work late in my shop today. So you have to take Taylor home after school.” I decided to take my son with me to the old people’s home for the first time because I couldn’t find any friend to help take care of him.

“What did you whisper about?” asked my husband.
Looking up at his dad and me with his big brown eyes, he told us, “I whispered, ‘I love you, Grandma. And I just want you to know that you look so beautiful today.’”

Indeed Stapleton is a son of Rodger Baskerville, the younger brother of Sir Charles. Rodger runs away and disappears. No one knows that he marries and has a child. The child is Stapleton and his real name is Rodger Baskerville, like his father.
There Stapleton discovers that only two people—Sir Charles and Sir Henry, separate him from the Baskerville fortune. Soon he gets close to Sir Charles Baskerville. Old Sir Charles tells Stapleton about the legend of the hound (猎犬 ) and prepares the way for his own death. Stapleton knows that the old man’s heart is weak. And he also knows that Sir Charles believes the legend of the hound. And so he gets the idea to frighten Sir Charles to death with a hound.
Stapleton buys the huge dog in London and takes it to Devon by train. He walks across the moor with it to make sure no one sees him with the dog. He finds a hiding place for the animal in the old tin mine (锡矿). And he keeps his hound there while he is waiting for his chance.
He paints the dog with phosphorus (磷), and gets it to jump over the small gate and run after Sir Charles. The huge black creature is a dreadful sight. Sir Charles runs away screaming and falls dead on the path from shock (震惊). Then Stapleton takes the hound back to its hiding place, so Sir Charles’s death is a mystery to all.

Anne has now been at Green Gables for a year. It was summer and an exciting time in the village. Mr. Phillips, the school teacher, was leaving, and there was a new minister for the church. He was Mr. Allan. Even more exciting was that he had a lovely young wife, Mrs. Allan, who would be the new teacher. Everyone liked them and invited them to tea.
Anne liked Mrs. Allan immediately because they could ask her any question they like. “I’m good at asking questions, Marilla.”
“I believe you,” said Marilla. “We must have Mr. and Mrs. Allan up to tea sometime soon,” she added.
Marilla and Anne prepared for tea all Monday and Tuesday. They made a great deal of food. Marilla wanted to give Mr. and Mrs. Allan the best tea of any family in the village.
Wednesday morning came. Anne got up very early because she was too excited to sleep. After breakfast, she made her cake. The cake came out of the oven looking perfect.
The minister and his wife arrived, and they all enjoyed a lovely tea. Everything went well until Anne’s cake was passed around.
“Oh, you must take a piece of this, Mrs. Alan,” said Marilla. “Anne made it just for you.”
“In that case I must try it,” laughed Mrs. Allan. She took a mouthful and a strange look came onto her face.
Marilla tried hers and said, “Anne! What on earth is in this cake?”
“Oh, isn’t it all right?” cried Anne. “It’s terrible. What flavoring did you use?” “Vanilla,” said Anne. “Go and get the vanilla.”
Anne returned with the bottle. Marilla took it and smelled it.
“Anne, you’ve flavored that cake with medicine! I broke a bottle of medicine last week and poured the rest of it in this old vanilla bottle. Couldn’t you smell it?
Anne was crying on her bed.
“Don’t cry, My dear little girl. It’s just a funny mistake, and everybody can make mistakes.” said Mrs. Allan.
