Pip meets a stranger
My first name was Philip, but when I was a small child, I could only manage to say Pip. So Pip was what everybody called me. I lived in a small village in Essex with my sister, who was over twenty years older than me, and married to Joe Gargery, the village blacksmith (铁匠). My parents had died when I was a baby, so I could not remember them at all, but quite often I used to visit the churchyard, about a mile from the village, to look at their names on their gravestones (墓碑).
My first memory is of sitting on a gravestone in that churchyard one cold, grey, December afternoon, looking out at the dark, flat, wild marshes divided by the black line of the River Thames, and listening to the rushing sound of the sea in the distance.
“Don’t say a word!” cried a terrible voice, as a man jumped up from among the graves and caught hold of me. “If you shout, I’ll cut your throat (喉咙)!” He was a big man, dressed all in grey, with an iron chain (铁链) on his leg. His clothes were wet and torn. He looked tired, and hungry, and very fierce (凶狠的). I had never been so scared in my whole life.
“Oh! Don’t cut my throat, sir!” I begged in fear.
“Tell me your name, boy! Quick!” he said, still holding me. “And show me where you live!”
“My name’s Pip, sir. And I live in the village over there.”
He picked me up and turned me upside down. Nothing fell out of my pocket except a piece of old bread. He ate it in two bites, like a dog, and put me back on the gravestone.
“So where are your father and mother?” he asked.
“There, sit,” I answered, pointing to their graves.
“What!” he cried, and was about to run, when he saw where I was pointing. “Oh!” he said. “I see. They’re dead. Well, who do you live with, if I let you live, which I haven’t decided yet?”
“With my sister, sir, wife of Joe Gargery, the Blacksmith.”
“Blacksmith, you say?” And he looked down at his leg. Then he held me by both arms and stared (注视) fiercely down into my eyes.
“Now look here. You bring me a file. You know what that is? And you bring me some food. If you don’t, or if you tell anyone about me, I’ll cut your heart out.”
“I promise I’ll do it, sir,” I answered. I was badly scared and my whole body was shaking.
“You see,” he continued, smiling unpleasantly, “I travel with a young man, a friend of mine, who roasts boys’ hearts and eats them. He’ll find you, wherever you are, and he’ll have your heart. So bring the file and the food to that wooden shelter over there, early tomorrow morning, if you want to keep your heart, that is. Remember, you promised!”
I watched him turn and walk with difficulty across the marshes, the chain hanging clumsily around his leg. Then I ran home as fast as I could.

Many people worked to send those men to the moon. It took many years to prepare for the mission. The first Apollo mission, Apollo 1, was not successful. During the later missions, the astronauts practised flying their spaceships. On the Apollo 8 mission, the astronauts flew around the moon. They were nearly ready for the first moon landing.
The Apollo 11 mission used a special spaceship. Its name was “Eagle”. The Eagle landed on the moon on July 20, 1969.
Only two astronauts walked on the moon that day. Neil Armstrong was the first person to step onto the moon. Edwin “Buzz”Aldrin followed him. The world watched the landing on TV. Michael Collins stayed in the spaceship. It was his job to look after the spaceship that would take them home. He had to make sure nothing would happen to it.
The astronauts did many experiments while they were on the moon. They also took some pictures of the moon. The astronauts left an American flag on the moon. Now the flag is still there. Someday moon travel may be common, and people will visit the place of the first moon landing.

We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly my mother will push the conversation into World War Ⅲ. She’ll talk about my not very bright future because I don’t plan to be a doctor. When I said that I planned to major in English and communication, she nearly went mad.
“Why can’t you be like my colleague’s son?” she bemoans all the time. Her colleague’s son received a four-year scholarship (奖学金) and is now making 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don’t know what to answer except that I just can’t be like Mr. Perfect. I can’t be like him. I want to choose a job because I love it, not because of honor or money
I understand why my mother is worried about my future major. I’ve seen my mother struggle (挣扎) to raise me on her little money and work long hours. She leaves the house around 6: 30 a.m. and usually comes home around 5 p.m. or even 6 p.m. However, I want her to know that if I become a doctor, it doesn’t mean I’ll be successful. One day, Jerry sold me to a baker with the words, “The food is good there and the work is fair. But I often carried very heavy loads(负荷). In the end they bought a younger horse, and sold me to a cab owner.”
My new master, Nicholas Skinner, was horrible. He had black eyes and a large nose. His horses didn’t have a rest on Sundays, even in summer in the city, when it was very hot.
Still, I did my best. But my life was now so bad that I wanted to die. And one day my wish nearly came true. We collected a family from the railway station. My driver put case after case on top of the cab. The load was very heavy, and I was hungry and exhausted(极其疲惫的). I did my best, but I fell to the ground. I really thought that I was going to die.
The vet came to look at me. He checked me very carefully and said, “This horse is not ill. He is simply too exhausted from overwork. Give him a rest for six months and he’ll be fine.”
Nicholas Skinner said, “If he can’t work, I need to sell him.” And so twelve days after the accident they took me to the horse fair. I held my head high, and hoped for the best.

One winter morning after breakfast, I went to the garden and was very surprised. I saw my father’s big footprints in the snow. I knew those footprints well. I didn’t know what to do-I need help.
When I got back to my room I opened the door…and there was my father, sitting on my bed!
The man sitting on my bed was about fifty and had long, dirty black hair and a black beard - he was my father. His clothes were very old and dirty, and his face was terribly white and thin. His shoes had holes in them and his hat did, too. He looked terrible.
“I see you’re wearing nice new clothes,” he said, looking at me.
“Widow Douglas bought them for me,” I said.
“And look at this nice bed and soft blankets (毛毯), and I have to sleep with the pigs!” he said. “I know that she’s sending you to school, and you probably think you’re better than your father, don’t you?”
“Maybe I do and maybe I don’t,” I answered without thinking.
“Remember, Huck, I’m your father, not that Widow Douglas,” he cried, looking at me angrily. “Now I’m here and you’re my son again, and sons do what their fathers tell them. I’ve never been to school and your mother couldn’t read or write when she died. You don’t need to learn anything. I don ‘t want to see you near a school! Is that clear?” He saw a book near my bed and threw it across the room.
I was really afraid and said, “Yes, father.”
I couldn’t look at him. He got up and said, “ I know Judge Thatcher has your money. It’s my money now because I’m your father.” He got up from the bed and left. I knew that he was going to get drunk (喝醉酒的).
The next morning he was drunk and he went to Judge Thatcher’s house. He tried in every way to get my $6,000 but Judge didn’t give it to him. Judge Thatcher wasn’t afraid of my father andthatmade me happy.
*Widow Douglas was Huck’s adoptive mother (养母).

The Law of the Jungle(丛林) says very clearly that when all cubs(幼崽) are old enough to stand on their feet, their mother and father must show them to the Pack Council(委员会). There is usually a Pack Council once a month at full moon. After the council the cubs are free to run where they want. No excuse is accepted(接受) if a grown adult wolf(成年的狼) of the pack kills one of them before they kill their first deer. The punishment(惩罚) for killing a wolf cub is death.
Father Wolf waited till his cubs could run a little. Then on the night of the Pack Meeting he took them and Mowgli and Mother Wolf to the Council Rock. The Council Rock was on the top of a hill. The hill was covered with stones and rocks and a hundred wolves could hide there. The leader of the pack was Akela, the great grey Lone Wolf. He was strong and cunning(狡猾的). Now he was standing on his rock. More than forty wolves of every size and colour sat below him. There were old grey wolves who could kill a deer on their own. And there were young black three-year-old wolves who thought they could. The Lone Wolf became their leader a year ago. When he was young, men caught him in a trap, and they beat him and left him for dead. So he knew the manners and customs of men. There was very little talking at the Rock.
The cubs played in the centre of the circle where their mothers and fathers sat. Now and again a older wolf went quietly up to a cub and looked at him carefully. Then he returned to his place on noiseless feet. Sometimes a mother pushed her cub into the centre of the circle to be sure that the senior wolves could see him. Akela from his rock shouted, “You know the law-you know the law. Look well, wolves!” And the anxious mothers answered his call, saying, “Look-look well, wolves!”
