As of April 8, the quake had killed 13 people and hurt more than 1,140 people. There had been more than 20 aftershocks (余震) of magnitude 5 or above in Hualien, as of April 10. From China Daily, April 15,2024 | |
What to do during an earthquake? | Inside: Don’t stand in a doorway. You are safer under a table. Outside: Move away from buildings, trees and gas lines. In a crowded place: Drop down onto your hands and knees and hold on to strong things. In a stadium (体育馆) or theatre: Stay in your seat. Protect your head and neck with your arms or any way possible. |
Earthquake warning | People get warnings of an earthquake before it arrives. How does this work? There are many seismometers (测震仪) in different areas. The volcano, known as Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai, is located off the coast of Tonga. Even though the volcano was underwater, it sent lots of gas, ash(灰烬)and stones 12 miles into the sky.
It took a while to get reports from Tonga because the event knocked out internet service in the area. Like most island nations, Tonga gets its internet through a cable that runs deep under the sea. Experts say it’s not yet clear whether the cable was broken during the event or simply lost power. A four-foot wave hit the capital, Nukualofa. People in low-lying areas were forced to go to higher ground. There are reports of serious damage(毁坏) in Tonga. Many houses near the shore were flooded. At present, the biggest danger is probably from the smoke and ash from the volcano hat has covered much of Tonga. The ash makes the air dangerous to breathe, and it is believed to have polluted many sources of drinking water.
New Zealand and Australia have sent teams to Tonga to help out. Some of the teams will use airplanes to get a better idea of the damage across the island nation. In the 1500s, South American fishermen said that the sea became warmer every few years. They gave this special event a Spanish name ‘El Nino’, meaning ‘the baby’. It is called ‘the baby’ because it arrives around Christmas.
El Nino is a huge area of warm water in the middle of cold water in the Pacific Ocean. It happens every two to seven years. It moves around the ocean and becomes bigger and smaller at different times. This warm water affects(影响)the weather. It is always raining over El Nino. El Nino contains(包含)a lot of energy. Scientists think this energy is formed when wind comes from the northern half of the world. The winds blow across warm sea water in the south. When the strong wind hits the warm water, violent weather happens. Scientists think that El Nino existed for many thousands of years.
El Nino affects every person in the world because it affects the entire(整个)world’s weather. It can bring the rain that farmers need. It can bring storms that destroy homes. It can mean that fishermen cannot catch fish, and it can bring floods.
There is nothing we can do about El Nino. It is an event of nature. We can help the world’s weather by trying to stop the greenhouse effect and air pollution. The most important job for scientists is to learn how to predict when El Nino is going to bring dangerous weather. Then, people can try to prepare for storms, floods and droughts. New technology like satellite(卫星)pictures and temperature measuring equipment can help. Still, it is very hard to say when or where El Nino will cause damage.
