“Welcome to our new ‘classroom’!” said Chen Dong, one of the three astronauts of the Shenzhou XIV mission.

They were giving a science class 400 kilometers above Earth on October 12. It was the third space class from the Tiangong Space Station, but the first one from the Wentian lab module (实验舱) since its launch in July. The former two classes were held in the Tianhe core module (核心舱).

What does the new “classroom” look like? Chen, together with Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe, showed us around. “The beds in the Tianhe module are placed horizontally (横着), while our beds are kept upright,” said Liu. That means astronauts in the Wentian lab module need to sleep standing up! But as Liu explained, people don’t feel any difference because there’s no gravity (重力) in space. Astronauts can even sleep on the ceiling or upside down!

The astronauts also showed their “space farm”, where lettuce, wheat, thale cress (拟南芥) and rice are grown. “Take a picture!” “Send the picture!” Through a voice-controlled camera, Chen already sent a picture of the thale cress to scientists on Earth. Then he used scissors to cut a sample (样本). “I’ll put it into a fridge at-80℃and later give it lo scientists on Earth,” said Chen. Scientists will study how the environment of space affects the growth of plants.

“Can you see the water drops coming from the leaves? This is called ‘guttation’ (植物吐水现象).” said Liu, holding the well-grown rice. In space, the water drops are much bigger than those on Earth. So people can clearly see the guttation.

“We hope in the near future, we can harvest the food grown on our own,” said Chen. “Maybe one day, we can harvest food on the other planets like the moon or even Mars!”

1. How do astronauts in the Wentian module sleep?
A.B.C.D.
2. How do scientists on Earth study the plants in the space station?
A.By growing the plants in space themselves.
B.By taking and collecting pictures themselves.
C.By studying the samples astronauts bring back.
D.By watching them through real-time (实时) video cameras.
3. What does the underlined word “it” in Para. 4 refer to?
A.A picture.B.A pack of rice.C.A piece of lettuce.D.A piece of thale cress.
4. What can we infer (推测) from the last paragraph?
A.Farmers can get crops on the moon soon.
B.“Guttation” can be seen from leaves of rice.
C.Scientists will try to grow food on the moon or even Mars.
D.Lettuce, wheat, thale cress will be grown on other planets, too.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了人们的基因来自父母,大多数人像母亲,但是新的研究发现,我们的基因受到父亲的影响比母亲的更多。

【推荐1】

“You are just like your mother.” This phrase is often said by many. As we grow older, we may notice that we’re getting more like our mother. Yet surprisingly, a new research has found that most people are more similar to their father. A team of scientists from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in the US found that we inherit (继承) equal (同等的) amounts of genes from mother and father. But we use more of the DNA we inherit from our father.

The study helps us to explain who we are. And more importantly, it helps us to find out whether we are likely to develop illnesses. For example, if we inherit the gene of an illness from our mother, it may not be as strong as if we inherited it from our father.

“We know that there are 95 genes influenced by our parents”, said Professor Villena. These are called imprinted genes (印记基因). But now, the study has found that there are thousands of other genes that have come from our parents.

For the study, the scientists choose three different species of mice with different genes. The mice then gave birth to nine babies each. When they all reached adulthood, the team measured (测量) every single gene of their DNA. They found an imbalance that swung toward their father. Villena also said that the recent study was the first to show that mammals (哺乳动物) are more similar to their fathers than mothers. “This is an exceptional new research finding that opens the door to an entirely new area of exploration in human genetics,” he said.

1. The new research has found that ________.
A.we will be more like our mother when we grow up

C.amounts of genes we inherit from parents are different
2. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A.The study can help us predict possible illnesses.
B.We are supposed to be stronger than our parents.
C.We don’t inherit the gene of illnesses from our mother.
3. Villena thinks that ________ are more like their fathers.
A.pandasB.ducksC.birds
4. Where would you most likely find this text?

文章大意:本文主要讲述了被困孤岛时如何与外界取得联系的方式,及在孤岛发送信号的方法。

【推荐2】What do you do when you are in trouble on an isolated island(孤岛)? Surely you need to find a way to get in touch with the outside world. Your best chance of doing this is to draw the attention of a passing plane.

Body signals

Pilots from different countries understand body signals if they have the correct training. When you wave your arms up and down in a straight line, it means “yes”. When you point downwards and swing your arm from side to side, it means “no”. If you want the pilot to know that it’s safe to land, push your hands in front of you and bend(弯曲)your knees. If you want to say it’s not safe to land, put your arms in the air and move them to one side.

Smoke signals

The smoke from a fire can be seen from far away, so it’s a good way to draw attention. If the weather is dry, it isn’t hard to start a fire. Remember, however, the fires can be very dangerous if they get out of control. Never light a fire unless you are sure that it can’t spread. If the ground is dark, light smoke can be seen more easily.

Ground-to-air signals

It’s a good idea to build some signals, too. Use large pieces of wood to make the symbols. If you can’t find any wood, use earth.

Pilots’ replies

If the pilot lowers the plane’s wings from side to side, this means “message received and understood” (At night, the pilot flashes the plane’s green lights. If the pilot flies the plane in a clock wise circle, this means “message received but not understood”(At night, the pilot flashes the plane’s red lights.)

However, there is no signal which means “message not received”.

1. Which picture means “it’s safe to land”?
A.B.C.D.
2. What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph3 refer(指代)to?
A.To have smoke.B.To draw attention.C.To have the dry weather.D.To start a fire.
3. According to the passage, you can use _______ to build Ground-to-air signals on a lonely island.
A.wood or earthB.grass and leavesC.wood and leavesD.sand or grass
4. If the pilot flies the plane in a clockwise circle, what does this mean?
A.It means “message not received”.B.It means “message received and understood”.
C.It means “message received but not understood”.D.It's not mentioned in the passage.

【推荐3】The sun, the moon and the stars(星星)are all in the sky. We see the moon and the stars at night. The sun is a ball. It’s much bigger than the moon. It gives us heat(热量).The sun has a family. It’s the biggest member of the family. The moon is a ball, too, like the sun and the earth. Sometimes it looks as round as a plate(盘子).Sometimes it looks half a plate. It looks bigger because it’s much nearer to the earth. It’s much smaller than the sun. It’s smaller than the stars. The light on the moon comes from the sun. It has no light of its own.

The stars look smaller than the sun. They look small because they are very far away from us. All day the stars are in the sky. But the light from the sun is too bright. We can’t see the stars in the day.

1. The sun, the moon and the stars are in the sky.
2. The moon is bigger than the stars.
3. The moon has its own light(光).
4. The sun, the moon and the stars give us light and heat.
5. The earth is one of the planets(行星).
