As Christopher looked down at the milk in his bowl, his elder sister, Kayla, was reading a book on the sofa. Suddenly, Christopher saw the bowl begin to shake. At almost the same time, he realized the whole room was shaking. Kayla stood up suddenly and shouted, “Earthquake!”
The dishes began making a loud sound in the kitchen. Several books fell down to the floor. A vase (花瓶) filled with flowers fell from the table in the corner of the dining room and broke.
Christopher and Kayla looked at each other and had the same thought: Get under the table! Together they got under the table and covered their heads. Christopher’s eyes were closed, and he hoped it would soon be over. He opened one eye just enough to see what his sister was doing. Kayla was next to him, huddled (蜷缩) in the same position. Then, as quickly as it had begun, the shaking died away. And Christopher and Kayla slowly sat up facing each other under the table.
“Are you all right?” Kayla asked, clearly caring about her brother.
“Yeah,” Christopher answered. “That was pretty scary, huh? Are you okay?”
Kayla nodded and stood up. Christopher stood next to her, and they checked the damage (损坏) around the room. When the phone rang, Christopher picked up the phone. His mother was on the other end. Christopher described the mess the earthquake had left inside of their home.
“Man, you should see how scared you looked!” Kayla teased (取笑) Christopher as he came back into the room. “What a baby!” “No more a baby than you, you big baby,” Kayla teased back, giving her brother a huge smile.
