On the night of September 29, 2023, the streets of a usually quiet Hong Kong neighborhood were filled with thousands of excited people. They were coming to watch the city’s fire dragon dance.
Hundreds of volunteers lifted up the dragon and danced along the streets of the Tai Hang neighborhood. “I feel very excited—everyone is.” said Cheung Leung, a member of the fire dragon dance committee.
Cheung, who has been part of the event for 20 years, said organizers have been practicing their performance since March. “The head of the dragon weighs at least 40 kg after we put the incense (香) on,” he said. “The key to a good performance is having a lot of strength (力气).”
The dance is a traditional event of the Mid-Autumn Festival in Hong Kong. Its history can date back to 1880. It is said to drive away the plague (瘟疫) from Tai Hang village. “This is an interesting tradition of Hong Kong,” said Kelly Liu, who saw the dance for the first time.
A local retiree (退休人员) and his wife were hoping to get some of the incense from the dragon—seen as a sign of good luck. “I’ve been watching this for many years—so many that I couldn’t count,” he said.
The event was accepted as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) by China in 2011. A museum was built for it and opened in 2022 in Tai Hang.

Yao Wei, director of the TV station’s Innovation Center, was invited to talk about how the TV station had produced the hit dance pieces at the three—day forum centering on the research of Chinese dance last month. “The seven dance pieces have got nearly 30 billion hits on social media platforms. That’s a huge success for Henan TV,” said Yao.
The pieces made an emotional effect on people, most of whom are members of Gen Z (people born between 1995 and 2009), Yao said.“Young people have grown up with a more open mindset and they accept Chinese culture willingly and are proud of it,” he added. “What we need to do is present Chinese culture in more interesting ways.”
Yao pointed out that they are also changing their shows to attract younger people. One of the keys is to produce content with strong visual creativity, such as the latest technology and stage settings, like underwater scenes, which have become the new ways of telling stories about traditional Chinese culture. It is generally believed that motion sickness happens when your senses become confused (混乱的) with each other. We use different parts of our body to feel movement. Our eyes tell us if we are moving. The inner ears (内耳) has a special liquid (液体) that helps us sense the direction and balance. Our muscles (肌肉) react to movement. When you walk around, these body parts work well together. But when you are in a car, a ship or an airplane, they get confused. Your inner ear signals that you’re moving, but your eyes say you’re sitting still because you can’t see that you’re moving. This mismatch gives us motion sickness.
But some people are less sensitive(敏感的)to motion sickness. This may be because they have certain genes (基因) that prevent mismatching senses.
Although there are many ways to deal with motion sickness, scientists believe that the key is to simply try and get used to it. For example, some astronauts do special exercises that give them mild motion sickness. After a week or two, the astronauts will get used to it and don’t feel uncomfortable any more.

Body language says a lot, but even with the development of computer vision and facial recognition technology, robots cannot easily or successfully notice small body movement and can miss important social cues as a result.
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University developed a body-tracking system that might help solve this problem. Called Open Pose, the system can track body movement, including hands and face, in real time. It uses computer vision and machine learning to process video frames, and can even keep track of several people at the same time. Also, it can track not only a person’s head torso, and limbs but also individual fingers.
This technology could be applied to all sorts of interactions between humans and machines. It could play a huge role in VR experiences, allowing finer detection of the user’s physical movement without any additional hardware like stick-on sensors or gloves.
It could also help build more natural interactions with a home robot. You could tell your robot to “pick that up”, and it could immediately understand what you’re pointing at. By perceiving and interpreting your physical gestures, the robot may even learn to read emotions by tracking body language. So when you’re silently crying with your face in your hands because a robot has taken your job, it might offer you a tissue.
