Most people enjoy listening to music. But if you ask your classmates what they like listening to, you will get many different answers. Why do different people have different musical preference (偏好)?

Researchers set out to answer these questions. They surveyed 350, 000 people from 50 different countries. Then, they detected some connections between musical preference and personality. The following were the results.

Outgoing people preferred danceable forms of music such as rap. Country music fans were shown to be more responsible in their jobs. The researchers guessed that worried people should like either sad music to express their helplessness or rhythmic music to improve their moods (心情). But it turned out that these people liked neither. Instead, they preferred loud music. Perhaps they liked to listen to this type of music to relax themselves.

The researchers also found that weather may influence people’s musical preference and personality. People in sunny places prefer danceable music. They may join an outdoor music club. They are more outgoing. This may be a result of longer daylight hours and warmer evenings. They encourage people to go outside to dance.

Of course, we can’t divide people into groups simply because of their musical tastes. The study just showed us that people of different cultures are more similar than we think. “People are divided by language and culture.” said Dr. David Greenberg. “But music is like a powerful bridge. It helps people communicate with other people.”

文章大意:本文主要讲长时间面对电子产品的屏幕对健康的危害。最后,呼吁人们不要长时间使用电子产品。

【推荐2】It might be fun to use your smartphone, but be careful. Too much screen (屏幕) time may be harmful to your health.

First, it is bad for your eyes. A researcher called Sarah Hinkley says the problem comes from the blue light from the screen. Looking at a smartphone for a long time can cause many diseases, for example, eye strain (劳损), headaches and dry eyes. So it is a good idea to take a break every 15minutes when you are working at a computer or using a smartphone.

Second, screen use can do harm to children’s brains. A new study shows that using screens too much can affect (影响) how children’s brains grow. If children use screens for more than one hour a day, they might have lower levels of white matter in their brains. White matter is a key to the development of language and reading skills. So it is wise to cut down the time of children using all kinds of screens.

Third, using screens too much will affect your sleep. According to a study, about 95% of the people between the ages of 13 and 64 use electronics (电子产品) before bed, especially the young people under 20. Doctors say that the light from those electronics at night may make you excited before you go to bed. Then it’s hard for you to get enough sleep. So you’d better turn off smartphones, TVs, and all other screens an hour before your bedtime.

To keep healthy, doctors and researchers strongly advise that you shouldn’t use screens for long hours.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了创造力的培养方法以及意义。

【推荐3】Although we may not have the ability to paint the Mona Lisa, create music like Mozart, or write novels like Hemingway, everyone is born with a special ability — creativity (创造力). Some people can find and learn to show it early, while others might discover it later in life. We are all creative, and we need to create as much as we need to eat, breathe and sleep. Creativity has different meanings for different people, but unluckily a lot of things may stifle the development of it. And the importance of creativity is not valued as much as it should be. However, it has a powerful effect (影响) on one’s overall ability to get true happiness and success in life. If we stifle our creativity or lower its importance, we may create blockages (阻碍) in other parts of life. This can stop us from improving things like health, work and personal relationships.

No matter how busy one is, it is very important to leave some time to develop creativity. Trying out different hobbies is a great way to discover one’s creativity because it can be very enjoyable. Some people find one hobby and fall deeply in love with it. Some people prefer to try different hobbies for short time, or change them up each season to stay interested and keep trying different things.

One great thing about a hobby is that there are no set rules. Each person gets to decide how often they want to do it and whether they want to keep it for a long time or move on to something else after trying it for a few weeks or months.

Another cool thing about hobbies is that one can enjoy them quietly when spending some free time alone, or as a way to fit in a community (集体). Book clubs, art or cooking classes, gardening clubs — nearly every type of hobby offers a chance to meet with other people with the same interest and build relationships. This could be helpful on both a personal and a professional (专业的) level. Hobbies can be a great way to create a community among co-workers. Sometimes if co-workers are not getting along, having them take part in a seemingly non-work-related hobby can be great for creating common ground.

Usually, the simple act of developing hobbies can provide a chance for a person to find and show his or her creativity, which will produce great active changes. When people experience something as simple and great as creating something beautiful through hobbies, they begin to look at the world — and daily environments — in a fresh, new way.
