Most people enjoy listening to music. But if you ask your classmates what they like listening to, you will get many different answers. Why do different people have different musical preference (偏好)?
Researchers set out to answer these questions. They surveyed 350, 000 people from 50 different countries. Then, they detected some connections between musical preference and personality. The following were the results.
Outgoing people preferred danceable forms of music such as rap. Country music fans were shown to be more responsible in their jobs. The researchers guessed that worried people should like either sad music to express their helplessness or rhythmic music to improve their moods (心情). But it turned out that these people liked neither. Instead, they preferred loud music. Perhaps they liked to listen to this type of music to relax themselves.
The researchers also found that weather may influence people’s musical preference and personality. People in sunny places prefer danceable music. They may join an outdoor music club. They are more outgoing. This may be a result of longer daylight hours and warmer evenings. They encourage people to go outside to dance.
Of course, we can’t divide people into groups simply because of their musical tastes. The study just showed us that people of different cultures are more similar than we think. “People are divided by language and culture.” said Dr. David Greenberg. “But music is like a powerful bridge. It helps people communicate with other people.”

First, it is bad for your eyes. A researcher called Sarah Hinkley says the problem comes from the blue light from the screen. Looking at a smartphone for a long time can cause many diseases, for example, eye strain (劳损), headaches and dry eyes. So it is a good idea to take a break every 15minutes when you are working at a computer or using a smartphone.
Second, screen use can do harm to children’s brains. A new study shows that using screens too much can affect (影响) how children’s brains grow. If children use screens for more than one hour a day, they might have lower levels of white matter in their brains. White matter is a key to the development of language and reading skills. So it is wise to cut down the time of children using all kinds of screens.
Third, using screens too much will affect your sleep. According to a study, about 95% of the people between the ages of 13 and 64 use electronics (电子产品) before bed, especially the young people under 20. Doctors say that the light from those electronics at night may make you excited before you go to bed. Then it’s hard for you to get enough sleep. So you’d better turn off smartphones, TVs, and all other screens an hour before your bedtime.
To keep healthy, doctors and researchers strongly advise that you shouldn’t use screens for long hours.

Some people can find and learn to show it early, while others might discover it later in life. We are all creative, and we need to create as much as we need to eat, breathe and sleep. Creativity has different meanings for different people, but unluckily a lot of things may stifle the development of it. And the importance of creativity is not valued as much as it should be. However, it has a powerful effect (影响) on one’s overall ability to get true happiness and success in life. If we stifle our creativity or lower its importance, we may create blockages (阻碍) in other parts of life. This can stop us from improving things like health, work and personal relationships.
No matter how busy one is, it is very important to leave some time to develop creativity. Trying out different hobbies is a great way to discover one’s creativity because it can be very enjoyable. Some people find one hobby and fall deeply in love with it. Some people prefer to try different hobbies for short time, or change them up each season to stay interested and keep trying different things.
One great thing about a hobby is that there are no set rules. Each person gets to decide how often they want to do it and whether they want to keep it for a long time or move on to something else after trying it for a few weeks or months.
Another cool thing about hobbies is that one can enjoy them quietly when spending some free time alone, or as a way to fit in a community (集体). Book clubs, art or cooking classes, gardening clubs — nearly every type of hobby offers a chance to meet with other people with the same interest and build relationships. This could be helpful on both a personal and a professional (专业的) level. Hobbies can be a great way to create a community among co-workers. Sometimes if co-workers are not getting along, having them take part in a seemingly non-work-related hobby can be great for creating common ground.
Usually, the simple act of developing hobbies can provide a chance for a person to find and show his or her creativity, which will produce great active changes. When people experience something as simple and great as creating something beautiful through hobbies, they begin to look at the world — and daily environments — in a fresh, new way.

The first question is about understanding English films and songs. Li Hao from Hubei wrote, “I like watching English films and listening to English songs, but I don’t understand very much. What can I do?”
Watching films and listening to songs are great ways to learn English! Watch and listen several times, and guess the meaning of the new words. Each time you will learn something new. I also advise you to talk about the films or songs with your friends.
The second question is about speaking. Wang Fan from Jilin wrote, “Our school has a teacher from the US. I am shy and I am afraid to speak to her. What should I do?”
You can say, “Hello! How are you?” “Do you like China?” These are good ways to start a conversation. And before you begin, you should smile at her! Remember this: Do not be shy. Just try.
The third question is about vocabulary. Zhang Lei from Anhui wrote, “I write down new words, but I forget them quickly. How can I remember them?”
Do not worry. It’s natural to forget new words! I suggest you write four or five words a day on pieces of paper and place them in your room. Read the words when you see them, and try to use them.

The “toilet revolution” was first carried out across the country in 2015. Up to now, around 68,000 public toilets in tourist areas have been newly built or rebuilt, costing 20 million yuan and another 64,000 are in planning, expected to be completed in two years’ time. This has provided enough clean toilets for the public and improved the quality of these tourist areas.
The government also aims to build clean toilets in rural (农村的) homes. The toilets should be at least 2 square meters large with wall, roofs (屋项), doors and windows. They will be either flush (冲水的) toilets or dry toilets with underground storage tanks (存储箱)
In 2019, China spent another 7 billion yuan on rural “toilet revolution”. By the end of 2020, over 65 percent of the rural areas have had clean toilets. While back in 1993, that number was only 7.5 percent, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
Why should we pay so much attention to the toilets? Toilets are a big thing in our lives. They take away our waste and keep our homes and communities healthy. One gram of human waste may have 10 million viruses (病毒) and 1 million bacteria (细菌). These make us sick or even kill us.
