A man walked by. He put a few coins into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by could see the new words.
Soon the hat started to fill up (装满). That afternoon the man who had changed (改变) the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized (认出) his footsteps (脚步) and asked, “Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?”
The man said, “I only wrote the truth (真相). I said what you said but in a different way.” His words were “Today is a beautiful day, but I cannot see it.”
Do you think the first sign and the second sign said the same thing?
Of course, both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign only told people to put some money in the hat. The second sign told people that they could enjoy the day, but the boy could not enjoy it, because he was blind.
The first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign reminded (提醒) people they were lucky that they were not blind.

A few weeks ago, my school’s ninth grade class went on a trip to the Black Country in England, UK, to learn about geography and history.
Many believe the name comes from the 1840s because of the black smoke put out by factories at that time. There is also a 10-meter-thick coal seam (煤层) close to the ground’s surface (表面), which also makes the Black Country black. However, all the smoke has become part of history now.
The aim (目的) of this trip was to help us get ready for a geography project about rivers. We also learned more about the history of England during the Industrial Revolution (工业革命).
On the first day of our trip, we went to Carding Mill Valley near Birmingham and learned about the changes that can happen to a river as it flows downstream. Our geography teacher gave us a few lessons on how rivers work before the trip, so we were well-prepared for the project.
The next day, we went to the famous Black Country Museum where we learned about coal mining and how local people lived during the Industrial Revolution. One of the best parts of the day was when we visited a coal mine (煤矿) and watched a skilled craftsman (工匠) make iron chain links (铁链节).
The trip was truly satisfying. I like how we could experience (经历) what we learned in class and practice it in real life. It was a useful way to get us more interested in what we were learning about. It also showed us the importance of the journey while learning something new.

Both the patch and the tree gave the place a wonderful look, and they were the pride of the gardener. But no one knew that the vegetables and the tree couldn’t stand each other. The vegetables hated the tree’s shadow (阴影), because he left them only just enough sunlight to live. The tree, on the other hand hated the vegetables because they drank nearly all the water, leaving him just enough to live.
The matters became so serious that one day the vegetables decided to use up all the water in the ground so that the tree would die. The tree answered back by not protecting the vegetables from the hot sun, so they began to dry up. Soon the vegetables were really weak, and the tree was drying up.
The gardener saw these, and he finally knew what had happened, so he stopped watering them. When he did that, both the tree and the vegetables felt that it was better to help each other. They learned how to live in harmony with those plants around them. So they decided to work together, using both the shadow and the water to grow well.
After seeing how well they were doing, the gardener gave the best care to the vegetables patch, watering and fertilizing (施肥) them better than any other patch for miles around. The vegetables and the tree lived happily there again.

The most important reason is that getting children to do chores teaches them a lot of life skills. They need to know how to clean, how to cook, how to shop, etc. It is, however, one of the things that schools don’t teach completely, so it is one of the main parts of learning that parents should provide for children before they leave home.
Children like to feel proud about their achievements. Making them help around the house can really help to give them a sense of pride. Also, giving them praise for helping will make them want to do more. They will feel happy to be able to help around the house.
Giving your children a job to do or an area in the house to look after will help them learn how to be responsible in their future life. They will see the benefit (益处) of keeping things organized, clean and tidy—and also be more thankful for what you do for them as they grow up.
Planning is a life skill that can be got from helping around the house. As children get older, you can start to teach them how to understand the needs of themselves and others and plan by themselves. For example, if they help with the washing, let them make sure that they do it in time. They may start to plan ahead.
All these reasons for getting kids to help around the house mean that they’ll grow up with a great set of skills that can be good for them throughout their lives. Why not get started today?

The Shuguang School in Shanghai is making its students do housework for their parents. The 3rd graders (三年级学生) must learn how to cook and clean; the 6th graders do the laundry (洗衣服), and the 7th and the 8th graders cook balanced meals with 15 yuan.
Many parents think it’s a good way for children to try housework, but they don’t know how to do it at home. With the following ideas, you can really get your children to help at home.
If you want to make your children think that they can do everything quite well, please don’t always scold (批评) them but give them lots of praise at home. Talk more about what they did right, not about what they didn’t do. If your children finish some difficult work, give them a Sunday trip or a ball game with you as a reward.

【推荐3】Do you often do chores in the house? After you finish your chores, will your parents give reward ( 奖励)? It is common for parents to reward their kids for doing chores. But some people do not think it is a good idea.
One of them is Susie Walton, an educator. She believes if kids get rewards, they will always think doing chores is not their duty (义务). Kids won’t sweep the floor when they see it is dirty. But they will do it if their parents reward them for it. Since every family is a team, it’s important for kids to see that everyone should do their part in keeping the house clean and tidy.
Other people don’t think so. They believe that rewards can encourage ( 鼓励) kids to do more chores. Rewards can also teach them real world lessons, like how they need to work to make money. Now, there are also apps like ChoreMonster to encourage kids to do chores. With the app, kids earn digital (电子的) point after doing chores. Then they can exchange ( 交换) their points for real rewards, such as time playing video games or a trip to a park. “Kids need rewards to make them do chores” said Chris Bergman, who started ChoreMonster.
