It is more than sixty years since the death of Lei Feng, and yet his spirit of selflessness is still alive, inspiring Chinese young people. In fact, the wish to help others can always be found among common people.
On September 5, 2022, when an earthquake hit Luding, Sichuan, 28-year-old hydropower station (水电站) worker Gan Yu chose not to leave but stay at his workplace, saving villages downstream from being flooded. People think he is a hero like Lei Feng, but he doesn’t feel that he should be compared to the young hero. “Lei Feng is a role model to all Chinese young people. The things he did may seem small, but behind them was a nobility (高贵的品质) that we can all achieve,” he said.
Zeng Qiangfei, 24, is also from Sichuan. In 2013, when an earthquake happened in his hometown, he was studying in a middle school. Zeng remembered seeing rescuers (救援者) and volunteers gather there to help. When he grew up, he became a volunteer himself. After a terrible quake hit Turkey and Syria this year, he flew there to help. During the rescue, he always saw local people bowing quietly to rescuers like them. “I grew up listening to Lei Feng’s stories. He is an excellent young man who spared no effort to help others,” said Zeng.
This view is shared by a 56-year-old British man named James Elroy Edginton, who lives in Hunan, the hometown of Lei Feng. Working at a local college, Edginton volunteers to help students from poor families, and is warmly regarded as a “foreign Lei Feng”. “I am honored to be connected with the spirit of Lei Feng His qualities are timeless and borderless (无边界),” he said.

When she enjoyed the city life, Sue also missed the countryside where she spent most of her time as a child. She thought the countryside was a great place to play and grow. So she offered to help out on an organic (有机的) farming program organized (组织) by a nearby college.
Sue put a small ad in a magazine, offering people the chance to volunteer at the organic farm. The volunteer program grew quickly. Soon other organic farmers participated, asking for people to help out.
With so many people and farms joined, Sue started World-Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) to help volunteers and farmers find one another. In order to attract (吸引) more volunteers, Sue made WWOOF not only a weekend activity, but also a place for travelers and people who wished to live and work on farms for longer periods of time. She worked very hard there, but she felt happy. She said, “The work can be tiring, but volunteers think it’s worth it. ”
By working on farms, the volunteers communicate with farmers and develop a love for the outdoors and organic farming.
Volunteering is something that anyone can do in our free time. So the next time you want to be busy on the weekend or on vacation, why not look for a good cause to spend your energy on? I think it is a fantastic way to enjoy your free time.

His practical father, a chemist, sent him to the University of Christiania to study for the ministry (牧师), hoping he would get a well-paid job and prevented him from playing his beloved violin. However, he soon lost interest in his courses and dropped out of school because he failed the exams. Fighting against his father, he devoted all his time and energy to the violin. Unluckily, though he had great ability, his teachers were not skilled, so that by the time he was ready to start his concert tour, he wasn’t prepared.
In Italy, after watching his performance, a Milan newspaper critic (评论家) wrote, “He is an untrained musician. If he is a diamond (钻石), he is certainly in the rough (粗糙的) and unpolished.”
There were two ways Ole could have reacted to that criticism. He could have let it make him angry, taking no notice of what the critic said, or he could learn from it. Luckily, he chose the latter. He went to the newspaper office and asked to see the critic. The surprised editor introduced him at once. Ole spent the evening with the 70-year-old critic, asked about his faults, and asked for the older man’s advice on how to correct them. With the old man’s help, he felt like he came to a new world and he knew where he was going.
Then he continued the rest of his tour, returned home, and spent the next six months studying under really able teachers. He practiced hours upon hours to get over his faults. Finally, he returned to his concerts and, when he was only 26, he became a great success in Europe. His devotion to music paid off.
