When Oxford University Press chose “rizz” as its 2023 Word of the Year, many young English speakers said, “Jeepers (Oh, my god)! That is unbelievable!”

“Rizz” means the ability to attract a person. Are you good at making friends? Do your classmates often laugh loudly at your jokes? If your answers to these questions are all “yes”, you probably have “rizz”. As in the phrase, “rizz up someone”, “rizz” is used as a verb. The word first appeared on social media as teen slang (俚语). Similarly, in China, words, like “xianyanbao” and “qimengle” are used by young people in a humorous way.

These changes show that both English and Chinese are alive. A healthy language, researchers said, should always have, new words being created, new words borrowed from other languages, and old words given new meanings. The changes also show that people born this century have more influence on society. The differences in lifestyles and ways of thinking have also played a role in the language.

As we look back on 2023, one thing we can’t miss is AI. AI systems have “rizzed up” many users around the world with their ability to write articles, draw pictures and sum up (总结) books. However, it’s hard to imagine an AI system coining a new word without any instructions and then influencing the way we human speak and write.

You should be proud of your ability to play with words. But before you go and create another hot slang word, always remember to be polite. Also, don’t use slang in your exams because it won’t “rizz up your teachers”!

A.patienceB.angerC.surpriseD.sadness
2. The underlined word “coining” in Paragraph 4 can be replaced by “________”.

3. What can we infer from the passage?
A.New words only appear in English.
B.A healthy language is the one that grows and changes.
C.The writer’s attitude to the language changes is negative.
D.Young people made the language lose its real meaning slowly.

A proverb (谚语) is a short, well-known saying that expresses a common truth or belief. Proverbs are found in most cultures and are often very old. In American history, Benjamin Franklin was a scientist, inventor and writer as well as a leader of the American Revolution.

    1

Franklin wrote a book called “Poor Richard’s Almanac”. It included many proverbs that he had heard or created. Some of them are still used today, like this one: “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” Franklin is also remembered for other proverbs like, “A penny saved is a penny earned.”     2

Here are other examples of proverbs that Americans use. The first ones are about love. Some people say, “All is fair in love and war.” They mean that anything you do in a relationship or in battle is acceptable.

3     In other words, when you are in love with someone, you may refuse to see anything bad about that person.

Here is another popular saying about love: “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Some people believe that a woman can win a man’s love if she prepares his favorite foods.

4    ” This proverb is true in love and war or other situations. It means that what you do is more important than what you say.

【推荐2】People around the world love their pets. Cats are very popular. Their strange and funny behavior has made them really popular on the Internet, too. And English has many cat expressions.

Today we talk about one that is about canaries(金丝雀). With the beautiful feathers and lovely bird-song, many people keep them as pets. Some cats like to catch such small birds. So, if a cat eats one, it may have a look on its face that shows both pride and guilt(内疚). The cat was happy when it did it even if it was wrong.

If I look very proud but a little guilty for doing something, others can say that I “look like the cat that ate the canary”. This means, “I should not have done it, and I know it was wrong. But I am still pleased with myself!”

When using this expression, don’t forget the guilt part. If you have a friend who didn’t study hard but still passed the test because she cheated and still looked proud of it… then the expression will work quite well.

Now, we use this expression in other situations. When we have a secret, we may look hike the cat that ate the canary. We also use it when we feel smug. It means you are too proud of yourself. This kind of people are also hiding something from others or simply not telling all the details.

1. What does the underlined word “smug” in Paragraph 5 probably mean in Chinese ________.
A.自豪的B.内疚的C.不以为然的D.自鸣得意的
2. Which paragraph shows how this expression “look like the cat that ate the canary” is created?
A.Paragraph 2.B.Paragraph 3.C.Paragraph 4.D.Paragraph 5.
3. Why can cats be popular on the Internet?
A.Because they are proud and guilty.B.Because they are lovely and beautiful.
C.Because they can catch the small birds.D.Because they have strange and funny behavior.
4. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A.We use this expression in only one situation.B.We shouldn’t be too pleased with ourselves.
C.We can use this expression in other situations.D.We should try to hide something from others.
5. What would be the best title for the text?
A.A cat and a CanaryB.An expression about pets
C.You shouldn’t make such friendD.Don’t put a cat and a canary together
