Are you the type of person who sticks to something once you have made your mind up? Do you set your heart and mind on something and then go for it without stopping? Have you ever been described as strong-minded?

If so, you are probably a very determined character. Determination is about moving forward to achieve your goals and not giving up when you meet difficulties. It is the willpower that helps you control yourself and achieve what you want. It is an inner strength (内在力量) that helps us to stay on course and reach our goals, no matter what.

Being determined is a very good quality to have. So how can we become determined?

Learn from your mistakes and the mistakes of those around you. Learn to look at the past as training for the future. Use those mistakes as a chance to learn something new.

Don’t be scared of failing. Failures are just stepping stones on the road to success. What you should be scared of is not giving your goal 100% effort. Just think about how you will feel if you give up on it.

Don’t waste time worrying about the things you can’t change. Use your strength and your determination to achieve things that you can control.

Be patient. The road to your goal may be long and arduous at times and you need to make great efforts on the way. Sometimes determination is about being prepared to wait for the right chance, and being ready when it comes up.

Don’t stand in your own way. This means believing in yourself and not setting limits (限制) on yourself.

To do something you’ve never done before, you need to become someone you’ve never been before. You have to be prepared to make changes.

Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa, Italy, in 1564. His father taught music while his mother cared for kids at home. The family was not wealthy, but Galileo’s parents paid for him to go to school.

At first Galileo planned to become a doctor, but he changed his mind. He liked a different kind of science—physics. In Galileo’s time, not much was known about how objects moved. Centuries earlier, a Greek(希腊人) named Aristotle had written down his ideas about movements, and everyone seemed to believe them. Galileo questioned those ideas and did experiments that showed how things really worked. For example, Aristotle thought that a heavier object would fall faster than a lighter one of the same size and shape. No one had ever really tested this idea. It just seemed to be true. Then Galileo came along, dropped two balls from a high tower, and discovered that they hit the ground at the same time!

In later years, Galileo became interested in how the stars and planets move. He watched the sky with a telescope(望远镜) he built himself. Once again, he saw things no one had ever seen before. For example, he saw that the Moon was not smooth. Then he noticed that the Sun had spots that seemed to move. Galileo realized from his observations(观察) that the Earth was moving around the Sun. A Polish (波兰的) scientist named Copernicus had said this recently, but no one believed him. Galileo knew that Copernicus was right. Unluckily, Galileo’s announcement got him into trouble with the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church said that the Earth was at the center of the universe with the Sun traveling around it. This was what people had long believed, but Galileo said it was untrue. So he was sent to prison. He was soon set free, but for the rest of his life he had to stay in his house and yard.

Galileo died in 1642, but his work helped to change the world. He is sometimes called “the father of modern science”, because he showed us how important it is to look carefully at things and to test out ideas with experiments.

文章大意:本文是篇说明文,主要讲为什么我们会跟别人面熟却不记得对方的名字,同时告诉我们如何记住别人的名字。

【推荐3】Sometimes we all have this problem: We know the face, but why not the name?

When you meet someone, you may be focused on impressing the person with your skill and professional knowledge rather than learning more about them. You introduce yourselves and shake hands. But when you meet the person again at the event, why do you draw a blank?

“One of the biggest problems is that people don’t really hear the name,” says Kevin Horsley, a master of memory and writer of Unlimited Memory. “They’re not really concentrating (集中注意力) because they’re trying to be interesting instead of trying to be interested.” The bottom line: Thinking of a name is difficult when you haven’t taken the time to listen to it.

When you study a new subject at school or prepare for a presentation at work, it takes time to learn the material. You study and review the subject matter before a test or a meeting with a client (客户). It is the same as meeting someone once and expecting their name to appear in your mind. Horsley describes this as the “tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon (舌尖现象)”. You can’t remember the name because you never learned it properly.

There are ways to improve your recall ability.

It is easier to find something you have forgotten from your mind a short time before. Horsley recommends going back to someone shortly after your first meet. While at a party, you could say, “Hi, Jill.” Then two minutes later say, “I’m sorry, you said Jill?” This process is a predictor (预示) of whether or not you’ll know the name later.

More importantly, consider changing your mind. As with any skill, if you think you are unable to master it, you may not make an effort to improve. “There’s not such thing as a good or bad memory for names,” says Horsley. “There’s only a good or bad method.”

1. What do you pay more attention to when you meet someone for the first time?
A.Your own abilities.B.Others’ names.C.Others’ appearances.D.Your clothes.
2. What does the phrase draw a blank probably mean in Paragraph 2?
A.draw a pictureB.forget something on purpose
C.cover something completelyD.be unable to remember something
3. What do Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.What people should do when first meeting someone.
B.What is usually on people’s mind when meeting someone new.
C.Why people are not able to remember a person’s name.
D.How to improve people’s ability to remember someone’s name.
4. Which of the following methods can be useful to help people remember others’ names?
A.Study a new subject at school.
B.Have a second conversation after a short time.
C.Introduce themselves to others again and again.
D.They can give nice presents to others after meeting for the first time.
