Space is an exciting place! Our solar system is in space. It is mainly made up of the sun and the eight planets that travel around the sun. The solar system also has moons and other space objects（物体）.

The sun

The sun is in the center of the solar system. It is a hot and bright star. A star gives off heat and light. The sun is the closest star to the earth. That’s why it looks different from other stars. Most stars look small. We can see them only at night because they’re so far away and sunlight is so strong that we can’t see them only by our eyes.

Around the sun

A planet is a large ball made of rock or gas. We live on one of them — the earth. Each planet moves around the sun.

Around the earth.

The earth has one moon. It travels around the earth. The moon is made of rock. It is covered with many deep holes. The moon may look as if it gives off light, but in fact, it doesn’t.

Scientists have told us so much about the Moon.

The Moon is an unfriendly place.     2     There are only lots of dust (尘土) and mountains around on it. So there are no animals or plants there. The temperature of the Moon is different from day to night.     3     However, it’s very cold at night.

    4     As we know, sound can only travel in the air but there is no air on the Moon. As a result, people can’t hear any sounds on it.

But from the Moon, you can see our beautiful Earth. It is shining more brightly than the other stars in the dark.     5     The photos would be wonderful.

【推荐3】Scientists have always wanted to know more about the universe (宇宙).

Years ago, they knew many things about the Moon. They knew how big it was and how far it was from the Earth. But they wanted to know more about it. They thought the best way was to send men to the Moon.

The Moon is about 384,000 kilometers away from the Earth. A plane can’t fly to the Moon because the air reaches only 240 kilometers away from the Earth. But something can fly even when there is no air. That is a rocket.

How does a rocket fly? There is gas (气体) in the rocket. When the gas is made very hot inside the rocket, it will rush out of the end of the rocket, so it can make the rocket fly into the sky.

Rockets can fly far out into space. Rockets with men in them have been to the Moon. Several rockets without men in them have flown to another planet (行星) much farther away than the Moon. One day rockets may be able to go to any place in space.
