Teenagers are advised to get eight to ten hours of sleep each night. However, most of them fail to get enough sleep because of heavy schoolwork. And plenty of young people are experiencing a sleep problem, which increases their risk of mental ill-health (精神健康状况不佳) . Have you ever thought the mobile phone can help teenagers manage their mental health by supporting a good night’s sleep?
Sleep Ninja is a free app created by the Black Dog Institute, a mental health research organization. It is the only app that is specially designed to improve teenagers’ sleep. So far, the results have been encouraging. The app helps teenagers get more sleep and reduce anxiety.
According to a study, 90% of the app users showed some improvements in insomnia (失眠) and 60% reported improvements in sleep quality. At the same time, the rate of depression (抑郁症) dropped from 77% at the start of the study to 44% after using the app.
Sleep Ninja is not only helpful but also easy to use. Those who use the app only need to set a time when they need to get up in the morning. Then the app will work backwards (向后) , deciding when they should be in bed.
It will also give them a warning to start a pre-bed habit. Seeing the warning, they’d better take a hot shower, brush teeth and get ready for sleep.
Besides, the app offers other useful ways to teenagers to help them get into a sleep habit. For example, it shows them how to set their things up in the bedroom, how to reduce terrible thoughts at night and what to do during the day to improve their sleep.

Senz
Problem: Common umbrellas love to invert(翻转) when it’s windy.
The Senz umbrella changes the found shape into the one that is long in the back and short in the front. The design is much stronger against even strong against even strong winds, and according to their tests, it won 't invert in a windy storm
Kazbrella
Problem: Once closed, umbrellas drip(滴水)all over everything and they need a lot of room to open up.
The Kazbrella tries to solve this problem. It opens in a special way. When closed, it looks like the common umbrella upside down, but when it opens, it is similar to the common one. The design allows the wet side of the umbrella to be inside once you fold it. As a result, getting in and out of your car is not a problem. You can close Kazbrella into the smallest space of a car door, remaining dry.
Rain shield
Problem: Rain can hit you from all directions.
In the face of a heavy rainstorm, a little more surface area would be a big help. So the Rain Shield has been given an extension(延伸)to one side, giving the protection from the side way rain and lowering the risk of being invert. And its bendy (弯曲)design means it is easy to take.
Don't you think that these umbrellas are fascinating? The good news is that you can buy Sen and Kazbrellas in London now.

David Bennett, a 57-year-old man from the US, received the world’s first pig heart transplant in January, 2022. He died two months later, on March 9.
It may sound like a failure, but it actually is a big step forward for xenotransplantation(异种器官移植).
Xenotransplantation has been a hot topic in medical research for many years, as doctors and scientists look for ways to solve the big problem of organ transplant waiting lists. In the US alone, over 100,000 patients are on a list waiting for new organs. Many of them will die before getting their chance to receive a heart, lung or kidney. Therefore, medical science has turned to animal organs.
Doctors have experimented with xenotransplantation since the early 20th century. There are few success stories. Usually, patients’ bodies reject(排斥)the animal organs. Bennett lived much longer than other xenotransplant patients. That’s because scientists removed pig genes(基因)that would cause fast rejection. Then they added human genes to help the body accept the organ.
“A lot of new information will come out that will help the field move forward at a faster speed.” Muhammad Mohiuddin, director of the transplant program, told The Guardian.
In another xenotransplant success, in 2021, doctors at New York University joined gene-edited pig kidneys to a human patient’s blood vessels(血管)outside of the body. Also that year, doctors at the University of Alabama put the gene-edited pig kidneys inside a patient’s body.
Though these recent successes were short-lived, they show that there may be a way forward for xenotransplants.

C.The transplant program. | D.The pig heart transplant Bennett received. |
A.Because it can make people live longer. |
B.Because new organs are in short supply. |
C.Because human bodies reject the animal organs. |
D.Because many people die after receiving a new organ. |
A.The transplanted organ was put outside of his body. |
B.Human genes that would cause fast rejection were removed. |
C.The transplanted heart was gene-edited to avoid fast rejection. |
D.The transplanted organ came from a pig instead of other animals. |
A.The recent xenotransplantation successes were meaningless. |
B.Over 100,000 patients are waiting for new organs around the world. |
C.Doctors at New York University put pig kidneys inside a patient’s body. |
D.Doctors have experimented with xenotransplantation for about 100 years. |
A.Xenotransplantation is developing step by step. |
B.Patients receiving xenotransplantation won’t die. |
C.Xenotransplantation does harm to people’s health. |
D.Xenotransplantation is sure to solve all the problems. |

Julie usually wakes up at the ring of a mobile phone. Then, she eats her breakfast to a video on the phone. When she gets to her company, she deals with the business on the computer. And she often downloads (下载) and stores things that she needs on her iPad. When she needs something, she can just turn on the iPad and search for it. She carries the iPad wherever she is on business because it’s light. When she is at home in the evening, she sometimes uses ChatGPT, a smart AI chat robot, to write her projects. She only needs to type in some key words and then she can get some ideas in a second. It can make her use less time to do more things. When visitors to the Palace Museum feel a need to sit down for a cup of tea or find a bathroom without a long line, they soon will be able to turn to their smart phones for the information they need.
This modern solution comes thanks to an agreement signed on Friday by the museum and Huawei Co., the telecommunication giant, to build a “smart network” using 5G technology. Under the agreement, 5G Wi-Fi signals will cover the Palace Museum, China’s royal palace from 1420 to 1911.
“It’s important to always stay close to the latest technology to better serve the public,” said Shan Jixiang, former director of the Palace Museum. Shan said there is still much room for improvement in the handling of a huge number of cultural relics, such as when the priceless painting “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” is exhibited again in the future. When it was last exhibited in 2015, visitors stood in long lines until 3 am to have a look. The museum ended up preparing fast food to serve the hungry visitors. “I don’t want that scenario to happen again,” Shan said. “Our operation can be done in a more scientific way.
The new system will also make use of the closed-cameras that are set up all over the Palace Museum to safeguard the museum’s precious relics. More than 1.86 million of them are housed at the museum, which recorded nearly 20 million visits from the public last year. “How can we make sure no single visitor who might have evil ideas threatens these treasures?” Shan said. “After adopting the internet of things, we can instantly detect any motion involving the relics to prevent such threats.”
The 5G network also will be used to improve remote meeting through webcams, which will discuss with scholars to jointly find the best answers for repair and store issues.

Some scientists found that plants can sense their surroundings (环境). You’ve all seen plants grow towards light which is called phototropism. Even if the top of them are cut off, the plants don’t change the direction. They sense the light and tell the rest of the plants how to grow then.
Some plants “talk” with each other by using “airmail (航空信)” to warn each other of danger. Researchers in England cut the leaves of cabbages. The cabbages then produce a tiny number of chemicals (化学物质) that protect themselves from some insects. Strangely, the cabbages which aren’t cut nearby also begin to give off their own different chemicals. That means they seem to receive a warning from their cabbage neighbors.
Most amazingly, plants have a great system (系统) of communication that can connect nearly every plant in a forest by fungi (真菌). It connects the roots of different plants to each other. Scientists call the system the “wood wide web”, similar to the Internet we use. Using the network, plants can communicate and share information and even food with each other.
Whatever the case is, plants are stranger and more wonderful than we can imagine.

In July, 2021, the government put the policy into practice to reduce students’ stress caused by too much homework and off-school training. Primary and junior high school students now are allowed to stay at school for two hours after school. Students can also take part in after-school activities and develop their hobbies. And what do people think of this big change in education?
Wang Weiqi, a student at a junior high school in Guangzhou, has less homework now. “The teachers have cut out the repetitive (重复的) exercises in the homework, which I welcome a lot,” he said, “That helps me have more time on basketball game after school. My school even holds a friendly match for us on each Friday.” “We have a reading course after classes end at 4 p. m. We can read poems and talk folk stories. I really enjoy the reading time.” said Yang Zhuoyi, a primary school student in Beijing. “Then we do our homework at school. I don’t have to do homework after going back home.”
When students leave school, they can see their parents, instead of their grandparents, waiting outside to pick them up. Students are happy about it, and so are their parents. “It’s good that I can come to pick up my daughter,” said Mrs Zhang, a mother of a second-grader. “But I have to buy some extra (额外的) books for her. Because I want her to know that learning is still important.”
Most people know and support the policy. They believe it would allow children to enjoy a happier childhood. However, there are some parents who are not quite as supportive of the policy. They are afraid that their children will end up paying less attention to their schoolwork.

Spend time together. Don’t play a computer game or watch TV by yourself. Ask your mom and dad to play with you, go outside together, play a game, or read a book out loud. Try to spend more time together.
Share your feelings and ask for help. Many kids say they’d like their parents to help them when they’re unhappy. Tell them if you’re sad or have a problem. They will be happy to help you.
Be kind and caring. Little things will mean a lot to your mum or dad. You can brighten a parent’s day with a hug, a card, or a joke. It is also lovely when a kid cleans up his or her room without being asked. It’s important to show that you care for each other. Kids and parents show their love by respecting each other and being caring, polite and thoughtful.
