Playing computer games is usually seen as a waste of time. However, what if you could actually learn something from a game? Students from Chengdu No.7 Middle School once designed four games that are both educational and fun.
Four groups of students were given the task of creating educational games freely. “After some discussion, we realized that we could use the knowledge we learned in physics and chemistry to design the game,” said Zhao Zian, leader of the group that made the game Arrow Round-the-World. The setting is an island on which players go on an adventure, performing tasks that include knowledge of many fields.
Another game called YOUNIVERSE (年轻宇宙) gives players a special task: overcoming the devils (魔鬼) inside their minds. They came up with three pairs of elements to show different attitudes when they face pressure. The idea is to find a balance between their stress at present and their ambition (雄心) for the future.
The other two groups have a bigger picture: environment and geography. Cover the Nest is a story about our future world where the environment is damaged (毁坏的) and society is unstable (不稳定的). Traveling through rich and poor neighborhoods, the player can feel the damage human beings have done to Earth. Back to Earth takes the player to different cultures in China.
“We just want to show that study can be fun!” said 15-year-old group leader Li Yunhao.

①Computer games have long been a part of my life. When I was a kid, I wasn’t that heavy a gamer. However, once I felt the need to be more productive (富有成效的) , I started feeling guilty (内疚的) about it anyway.
②I stopped all gaming from entering my life. But after a few days, I restarted. Then I forced (强迫) myself to stop again. This struggle(挣扎) was repeated so many times that I decided to take a different path.
③Gaming is here to stay, but I must balance (平衡) my gaming with my studies.
④Activities like gaming, though they are not productive, are necessary. We need some time when we aren’t thinking about our problems. For other people, this means watching TV or going shopping. For me, it’s playing games.
⑤But let’s face it: For most of us, gaming is not an important activity. These types of activities shouldn’t take up too much of our time, I started to record how much time I was spending playing computer games. I play games only after I’ve prepared myself for quizzes and exams. Also, I decide how long I want to play before I start-30 minutes a day at most. This way, I can relax by gaming, but I won’t spend the whole day playing games.
⑥To make sure that I am sticking to (坚持) my plan, I will set an alarm clock and put it in another room before I start playing. When it rings, I must get up to turn it off. I believe that gaming can be part of a productive day as long as I am able to learn how to balance it with my studies.

Lots of kids like to play computer and mobile games these days. Is this good or bad for us? How do we deal with this issue?
In my opinion, playing games responsibly (负责任地) can help us relax. As the old saying goes, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” For example, when I finish five days of studying, I feel tired. That’s when I like to play a game called King of Glory with my classmates.
We all have lots of fun playing and talking about it. When we win, we feel happy. And when we lose, we still want to play more. I think that’s why so many students in our school like to play this game. It can not only help us relax, but also strengthen our friendship.
In addition, playing games can exercise our brains and help us think more quickly. When we start to play a new game, we’re not very good at it. But we can get better through practice. This process exercises our brains and makes them more active. However, you should make sure that you have finished all of your homework before you play games.
Still, some students seem like they are addicted (上瘾的) to games. They can’t control themselves and will play games for five hours a day. That is not good. It’s bad for not only their eyes, but also their health. They will feel tired in class the next day, which will affect (影响) their studies. That’s not very responsible.
Therefore, I can only say that we should try to be self-disciplined (自律的) and responsible when working out how much time we should spend playing video games.

【推荐1】Every morning my father buys a newspaper on his way to work. Every evening my mother looks through magazines at home. And every night, I look at the posters with photos of David Beckham and Yao Ming on my bedroom wall before I go to sleep. Can we imagine life without paper or printing?
Paper was first created about 2,000 years ago, and has been made from silk, cotton, bamboo, and since the 19th century, from wood. People learned to write words on paper to make a book. But in those days, books could only be produced one at a time by hand. As a result, they were expensive and rare. And because there weren’t many books, few people learned to read.
Then printing was invented in China. When printing was developed greatly at the beginning of the 11th century, books could be produced more quickly and cheaply. After that, knowledge and ideas spread quickly.
Today information can be received online, downloaded from the Internet rather than only found in books. And information can be kept on CD-ROMs or machines such as iPads.
Computers are already used in classrooms, and newspapers and magazines can already be read online. So will books be replaced by computers one day? No, I don’t think the Yao Ming poster on my bedroom wall will be replaced by a two-metre-high computer!
Answer the questions according to the passage.
1. When was paper first created?
2. Before the invention of printing, were books produced by hand or by machine?
3. What happened after books became cheaper?
4. According to the passage, where can information be kept?
5. Can newspapers and magazines be read online now?

But 5G can solve these problems. 5G technology is used widely now. What influence will 5G really have on our lives?
The “G” in “5G” means the generations of mobile network technologies. 1G let us talk to each other. 2G let us send messages. 3G gave us mobile data and the Internet, and 4G made all of these things faster. With 5G you can download an HD movie in seconds, send and receive data almost without stopping.
5G is able to improve many advanced technologies, such as driverless cars. With a 5G network, almost no stopping in information exchange will allow driverless cars to run more safely, as they will be able to communicate in real time and avoid dangers. At the same time VR games will become more popular with 5G because it can make games feel even more real.
Though 5G will make our lives more convenient, it will not be perfect. For one thing, 5G will not “travel” far. 5G will only cover about 300 meters. In order to use a 5G network we will have to buy new and expensive products only for 5G.

How do we know the time? A clock, a watch or a mobile phone can help us. However, many years ago there were no clocks and knowing the time was not so easy. Over the centuries people have developed different ways of telling the time.
About 5,500 years ago, the Egyptians (埃及人) invented the sun clock. This was a tall stone building. Its shadow (影子) showed the movement of the sun. So people were able to know midday. The Egyptians made a sundial (日晷) about 3,500 years ago. It was smaller than the sun clock and could let people know the time for half a day. On cloudy days or at night it was impossible to tell the time with a sun clock or a sundial. Water clocks were the first clocks not to use the sun. The idea is simple. Water flows (流动) from one bottle to another. When the water reaches a certain level, it shows the hours. The Egyptians used water clocks about 3,400 years ago. These clocks were popular in the Middle East and China. But they failed to make people know the exact time.
In the 13th century, the mechanical (机械的) clock was invented. This was more exact, but it was expensive to make one. Over the next few centuries it was developed. For example, springs (发条) were added around 1500. This enabled people to get the correct time and allowed clocks to be smaller. In 1927, the first quartz clock (石英钟) was developed. Clocks became cheaper to build. It’s also cheaper for people to own a clock. People began depending on them more and more to run businesses, markets and so on. More recently, in 1956, came the digital (数字的) clock. And nowadays satellites (卫星) send our mobile phones the time to the exact second.
There has been a lot of progress in timekeeping. Clocks are always changing but some things never change. Many of us still have trouble getting out of bed on time and not being late for school or work.

In the rich part, a lot of people eat too much. In one part, children are hungry and in the other, a lot of people are fatter and fatter and have to go on diets or do some exercise to lose weight. For example, a dog or a cat in North America eats better than a child in the poorer countries.
The poor countries have some difficult problems. Sometimes the land is too poor to grow anything on. The land can get better, but people have to do a lot of things first. More experts (专家) should go there to teach people how to enrich their land and how to find water.
But rich countries have problems, too. They are not always pleasant places to live in. Sometimes the air is too dirty to breathe (呼吸) and the rivers are too dirty to swim in or to take water. The roads and the streets are full of people and buses. Cars usually move very slowly. Noise is terrible. A lot of people do not have houses to live in. People must do something about these problems. We should do something to make the air and the rivers clean and build more houses. But it will take a long time.

We’ll finally grow up someday, leaving our parents and facing the challenges in life. Parents may not be able to offer the solution to every problem for us. Instead, we should have enough life skills to deal with the problems.
This is what our country tries to do now: helping more students get working spirit. To stress (强调) the necessity of hard-working spirit education among students of different ages, our country released a guideline (指导方针). The guideline calls for students to respect (尊重) work. Students should learn basic life skills and develop good working habits through such education.
However, this has been missed out in recent years. Many teens do not value the importance of working hard and are not interested in doing so. According to a study of nearly 3,000 students that was done by Ningbo Evening News, only 22 percent of primary and middle school students help with daily housework around the house.
“Schools and families play an important role in teaching students about the value of working hard,” the guideline says. Primary and middle schools should offer hard-working spirit classes every week. Schools can also hold activities to give students real-world work experience. As children’s first teachers, parents should also be active to encourage children to learn to do chores. Only then can students master enough skills to live a better life.
