Emily was an eighth grader. To pass her Civics course, she had to do some volunteer service in a nursing home for a week.
One Monday, Emily went to the nursing home after school. When she arrived, she was told she would spend an hour every weekday with an elderly lady, Mrs. Blair. She was then led into a room, where an old lady in a flowery dress was sitting on a sofa.
Emily stood nervously in front of the lady. She cleared her throat and said, “Good afternoon. I’m Emily.”
“Good afternoon, Emily. Take a seat, please,” Mrs. Blair replied.
Then, silence filled the space between them. Emily didn’t know what to say.
“Tell me about yourself, Emily,” Mrs. Blair said suddenly.
“Well,” Emily started, “I don’t have any grandparents, so I can’t relate to elderly people much. I love the performing arts. I’m here mainly because I have to be here to get a good grade for my Civics class.”
Mrs. Blair didn’t seem to mind. “Many people, especially teens, don’t seem to care about old people like me. Now you’re here, and I’m going to change that about you. Ask me anything.”
Emily thought for a moment, and finally decided, “What was your job?”
“I was a Broadway star in the 1950s,” Mrs. Blair answered.
“Cool! Can you tell me about it?” Emily asked, amazed.
Emily smiled along with Mrs. Blair and listened to the other stories, attentively. She had become so interested in Mrs. Blair’s stories that she decided to come earlier the next day.
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday passed by quickly. Then came Friday. As she was leaving, Emily was really upset to say goodbye.
“Don’t be sad. You can still visit me,” Mrs. Blair comforted her. She then handed a small box to Emily, “It’s a gift for you. ”
Emily carefully opened the box and was surprised to see what was inside. “It’s the bracelet that you wore. Thank you!” Emily said, with tears in her eyes. “I’m sure to visit you whenever I’m free.”
On her way home, Emily thought of her own love for the performing arts. She touched the bracelet and made a promise that she would keep her word to Mrs. Blair.

Zhou Jiangtao passed away at only 17 years old. He got bone cancer when he was 13. Four days before the announcement of his death, he asked to donate his organs (器官). “I do know the pain of suffering from disease and the helplessness of having no cure (治愈方法) …I’ve seen so much sadness and regret and want to offer help.”
On the day he ‘‘left’’, two patients who had been waiting for cornea transplants (角膜移植) were told they would get donations. Zhou’s body was moved to Zhejieng University School of Medicine on the same day.
It has been 12 years since China started a national pilot (试点) programme for human organ donation. According to the China Organ Donation Administrative Center, about 300,000 people across China are waiting for life-sustaining (维持生命的) organ transplants, but only 20, 000 receive transplants each year.
In recent years, organ donation and transplantation have gotten more public support in China. As of April 2, more than 4. 62 million people had signed up (登记) for organ donation, said the center. As many as 75 people can benefit from a single donor (捐献者). There’s no age limit to donation, while people under 18 need a guardian’s consent (监护人同意).
In China, there are some deeply rooted traditions about the bodies of dead people. For example, many believe the body is a gift from one’s parents. So, they think dead bodies must be kept complete.
But many others have changed their beliefs. Donating organs is a way to help others and extend (延展) the meaning of one’s life. Increased willingness has been seen among young and
middle-aged people, noted People’s Daily. “Dedication (奉献) makes life more precious (宝贵的) than oneself,” Zhou once said.

【推荐3】Zhao Zhansheng, 43, is a member of a rescue team (救援队) of Henan Province. In the face of the serious floods (水灾) in July 2023 in Zhuozhou City, North China’s Hebei Province, he and his teammates arrived there to help those in need. In a video posted on the Internet, Zhao skillfully prepared huimian noodles, which are popular in his hometown, right on the streets. He invited all local people and rescuers passing by to have a meal.
“Please let the kids who haven’t had breakfast this morning eat first. Don’t worry. We have plenty of food. Anyone who comes to my stand (摊位) can have a bowl of hot noodles today,” Zhao told the crowd.
The video touched hundreds of millions after being posted. Just in two days after posted, it has been watched nearly 10 million times, receiving over 770,000 likes. Rescuers from different provinces, including Shandong and Sichuan, were seen in the video, standing in lines to receive the meal. People thought highly of Zhao’s heartwarming work. One said, “A pot of noodles may cost around a hundred yuan but his kindness comes with no price.”
“Although the locals’ losses were great, many of them joined me in preparing the meals. I’m thankful for their support as well,” Zhao said. “My other team members are busy saving people from the floods and they worked even harder than me. My role is to provide support,” Zhao answered to the praise.
“If we run out of what we’ve brought, we can buy them locally. I will stay in Zhuozhou until the flood waters move back from a high level, offering help wherever it is needed,” Zhao added.

Hi, Tom,
Thanks for your message and I am glad that you wrote to me for advice.
I remember when I was learning English, I also felt uncomfortable about speaking. I could remember lots of words and knew grammar rules, but speaking was difficult. I now feel a lot more confident about speaking, so here are some ideas that I have taken from my own experience.
▲ Other people will still know what you mean and probably won’t notice your mistakes.
Use every chance you get to speak. For example, it’s a good idea to use only English in class. At home, you should also try practising new words and grammar learnt in class.
Think about extra speaking practice outside the classroom. You can join conversation groups. They are usually free to join.
Practise speaking online. There are lots of websites where you can communicate with someone from all around the world.
I hope this helps you and please come to me if you have other problems.

I have seen your advertisement for a teacher in the magazine Guangzhou Education. I think I'm suitable for the job.
I am 28 years old. I finished my high school education in Xiamen, and then went to university in Fuzhou. I studied languages, with English as my major (主修课程). I always got good scores for all subjects. At university, I was a very active student. I was chairman of the English Film Club and a member of the university squash (壁球) team.
I have traveled to a number of English-speaking countries. I think my English language skills have improved as a result and I can teach senior classes without any problems
I have worked as a teacher for four years. I have taught at a well-known language school in Hangzhou. This has been a good experience. I have also taught special courses in Writing for Business, showing people how to write good business letters for Tour Guides. All these experiences have helped me become a good teacher.
I am a warm and friendly person, and my students enjoy my lessons. I think language learning can be fun. I always encourage my students to use English outside the classroom, do projects and take part in English language activities. I have helped my students put on plays and give concerts of English songs.
I want to live in Guangzhou and teach in your school. I hope for an interview so I can tell you more.
Yours faithfully,
William Fang
