The first kind of people we meet are more excellent than us. They can teach us in both work and life. When we are in trouble, they provide encouragement and guidance (指导) for us. In fact, these people are like our teachers. We should respect and thank them.
The second kind of people we meet are very similar to us. We can easily become close to them because of the similar living places, family backgrounds, interests, looks and even the similar experiences. When we stay together with them, we could feel safe, relaxed and at home.
The third kind of people we meet are not as good as us. When they come into our life, our responsibility (责任) and inner kindness tell us to care for them. We should help them see a great world instead of looking down on them.
In a word, we should be thankful for learning, sharing and growing with different people in our life.

As it is well known, saying “no” is not easy at all. But sometimes we have to learn to say “no”. To learn to say “no”, we have to first understand what’s stopping us about it. There are some common reasons why people find it hard to say “no”.
You want to help others. You are a kind soul(灵魂) at heart. You don’t want to turn the person away and you want to help when possible, even if it may take up your time.
Afraid of being rude. I was brought up under the idea that saying “no”, especially to people who are older, is rude. This thinking is common in Asian culture, where face-saving is important. It means not making others look bad or lose faces.
Wanting to be agreeable. At times, you find you are not in agreement. You don’t want to keep yourself away from the group, so you agree to do others’ requests.
Fear of conflict(冲突). The person might be angry if you refuse him. This might lead to an ugly conflict. Even if there isn’t, there might be disagreement which might lead to bad effects(影响) in the future.
Fear of losing opportunities. Sometimes, saying “no” means closing doors or losing opportunities. It may make you feel worried. For example, one of my friends was asked to work in another department(部门) in her company. Since she liked her team, she didn’t want to go. However, she didn’t want to say “no” as she felt it would affect her promotion(晋升) opportunities in the future.

My sister, Susan, and I wanted to have a surprise party for our dad’s birthday. We invited some of his good friends to our home.
My dad’s birthday was on Saturday. My parents went to visit my grandparents in the morning. Then we started to prepare for the party. My sister cooked well, so she was in charge of (负责) the food. And I was in charge of decorating the room. I blew the balloons and decorated (装饰) the chairs with streamers (彩纸条). Then I put some fresh flowers we bought on the table.
After 4:30 p.m. my Dad’s friends came one by one. We asked them to stay in the room with the lights out. About half an hour later, my parents came back. When Dad walked in, turned the lights on. It took him a few minutes to realize (意识到) that the party was for him. He was very surprised.
All of us enjoyed the evening.

We enjoyed putting this issue of the magazine together for your reading pleasure. Here are some of our favorites.
①“Dodie’s Darling Dalmatians”
Like many of us, I grew up loving the Disney film 101 Dalmatians, but knew little about the book and its relationship with the film. And I even knew less about the story behind it. It was exciting to get a close look at the life of the writer Dodie Smith and her own beloved Dalmatians who provided the idea for his heartwarming story. Zoe, Managing Editor |
②“My Adventures With A Paint Brush”
It describes how taking up painting enriched Winston Churchill’s life. The focus of the painting was clearer and he was more aware of colors and details in natural scenery he had ignored before. His story opened my eyes to the wonders of nature, and the different color caused by light and shade that we are too busy to see. Diane, Senior Editor |
③“Laughter Is The Best Medicine”
The humor pages show that a good joke can often greatly show the background of its time. It has as much power today to make us smile as it did when it first appeared. Melanie, Chief Editor |
④ “The Great Balloon Escape”
I love a good Cold War escape story, so naturally I was drawn to “The Great Balloon Escape”, which describes in frightening detail how two East German families made a crazy plan to make their own hot-air balloon and fly to freedom. Diane, Senior Editor |

Many children in China are facing the same problem: tablet (平板电脑) and iPad using is bringing problems to their eyesight. The problem is so common that newspapers even call the iPad the “No.1 killer of children’s eyesight.”
“There are about 30 shortsighted children coming every day,” said Hu Dali, an eye doctor at Guiyang Aier Eye Hospital. “Half of those children have poor eyesight because they have played with phones and iPads for too long.”
Doctors and scientists say children’s vision(视力) is not yet fully developed(生长) and their eyes get tired more easily. The screen of an iPad uses a very bright LED backlight. If children look at an iPad screen for a long time, their eyes do not have time to rest. This will make their eyesight worse over time.
Doctors advise that users should hold their iPads between 40-60 centimetres away from them. The brightness of the screen should be comfortable for children. Parents should also stop their children from using an iPad for more than one hour every day.
