Pauline Jones, 18, lives in Cardiff, Wales. Next year she wants to go to university to study Chinese, but now she’s living in Belize. Pauline says, “I’m working with other people here to save the coral reefs (珊瑚礁) in the sea near Belize. The reefs here are beautiful, but if the sea water is very polluted, the coral dies. I’m helping to do research on the coral and the fish that live around the reefs. All over the world, coral reefs are dying. We need to do something about the problem before it’s too late.”
“I’m staying with a family here and I help do some housework. I don’t get any money, but that’s OK. I love my work here, and I’m learning a lot about the people of Belize—and myself! When I finish my work, I want to stay here for another three months. I want to travel around Belize and Central America.”

![]() The only thing better than reading a good book is reading it with others. In a book club, a group of people choose a book that everyone will read individually and then discuss together. There are no rules to starting a book club, and the plan might well change, depending on the groups. It's good to think ahead about how you'd like the book club to run. Think of 8 to 12 others (people around your age) who you'd like to be part of your book club. Perhaps encourage your friends to invite people whom they know well but you haven't met. A book club can help you make friends. Having a topic can make the club feel more focused. Finally make sure you read the book before the meeting, and come prepared with questions to ask and things to talk about. | Want to dive into stories with friends and share your thoughts? ●________ A schedule is a good way to make sure everyone gets a chance to choose the book. Alternatively, you could provide a selection of books and ask everyone to vote for what they want to read next. ●What do we talk about? Some questions are especially good for sparking discussion about a book. Try these: if you could give the book a different ending, what would it be? What do you think the main character looked like? What do you think will happen next? ●Where do we meet now? To help ensure social distancing, It's best to meet up online. With an adult's help, you can set up a video call between book club members. You can then take part from your cosy reading corner and enjoy yourself. |

【推荐3】Is there a connection between music and language?
According to recent studies the answer is yes. Music improves certain language abilities in the brain. Here, let’s look at two examples.
A recent study by researcher Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person’s hearing ability. In his study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly. Musicians hear better because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. Think about violinists in an orchestra (交响乐团). When the violinists play with the group, they hear their own instrument and many others, too. But the violinists must concentrate on what they are playing, and pay no attention to the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to focus on certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.
Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke (中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to speak. Why does it work? Schlaug isn’t sure. Music seems to make different parts of the brain work, including the broken parts. This might help patients to use that part of the brain again. Music improves attention, memory, listening skills, and language abilities. It can even help sick people get better.
Playing an instrument or singing can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp (敏锐的) as we get older. Music is not only enjoyable , but also good for us in many other ways.

【推荐2】It is a good idea to give school trips to students. Many people know that students sometimes need to learn outside. Study and learning are not just reading books!
Some school trips make students see more about nature (自然). The students visit many places such as zoos, mountains, forests or sometimes farms and so on. The teachers want the students not only to know about nature, but also to learn to love it and take care of it.
Other school trips are for students to learn about their city or interesting jobs. They take students to visit a police station or a fire station. These kinds of school trips help students learn about jobs, and help them to be thankful to the people who work for their city.
Students usually love school trips! They can go out of the classroom and have fun. The teachers know that students can learn a lot when they relax (放松) and have fun. School trips can please both teachers and students!
