From a plane you can see the fields, cities, mountains or rivers below. If you go into space, you see more and more of the earth. Many man-made satellites (人造卫星) are sent into space to look at the earth, the stars and other planets and learn more about them.
The moon is our neighbor in space. It is smaller than the earth. Plants can’t grow on the moon because there’s no air or water on it.
The moon hasn’t got its own light. It shines back the light of the sun. When the sun is shining on the side of the moon that faces us, it looks like a great round ball. We can’t see the moon when the sun is shining on the side of the moon that faces away from us.
In fact, the moon is far away from us. It is three hundred and eighty thousand kilometres away from the earth. Of course, we can fly to the moon in a spaceship. A spaceship flies very, very fast. It only takes more than three days to get there by spaceship!

The space shuttle discovery has taken off from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida several times and carried a few groups of astronauts to the International Space Station.
When the space station is finished, it will be like a city in space. People will stay and study there with many of the things they have at home. Labs, living rooms and power stations are being built. The ISS is the most expensive space program ever. Millions and millions of dollars are being spent on it every year.
Scientists hope that the ISS will be a stepping stone for future space exploration. " The ISS will help us better understand the human body, explore(know more about) space and study the earth. It can help us make life on the earth better, "said Kathryn Clark, an ISS scientist. Sixteen countries are in the program: The US, Russia, Canada,Japan, Brazil and 11 European countries. China is not an ISS country, but it helped with some of the experiments. In 2003, China sent some rice up to the ISS to find out what space would do to it.
If you watch the sky for about an hour after the sun goes down, you may see the moving ISS. After it's finished, more than 90 percent of the world's population will be able to see the space station. So keep looking up, and maybe you'll see it get bigger and brighter.

Gunpowder
Chinese alchemists had tried for centuries to invent something that could make people live forever. Many experiments used a chemical called saltpeter. In the year 850 A.D., a group of alchemists mixed saltpeter with sulfur and charcoal. The mixture burst into flames. The explosion injured the alchemists. It also burned down the house they’d been working in. The Sung Dynasty soon used the new powder in the wars. Chinese soldiers shot ‘flying fire’—arrows(箭)with small tubes filled with gunpowder—at enemies. Gunpowder did the exact opposite of making people live forever. Today, it’s still the basis for most weapons.
Penicillin
Scottish bacteriologist Alexander Fleming made an unexpected discovery in 1928. He’d been experimenting with a plate of bacteria(细菌). One day, he discovered that it had been made dirty by mold(霉菌). He also noticed that the bacteria around the mold had died. More experiments showed that the mold killed many of the bacteria that made people sick. Fleming had accidentally discovered one of the first antibiotics(抗生素)! He named his discovery penicillin, for the mold that had led to the discovery. Two other scientists, Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain, created a new version of penicillin. It was used to treat people. The three men won the 1945 Nobel Prize for their life-saving work.
Hook-and-Loop Fasteners(魔术贴)
Swiss engineer George de Mestral went hunting one day in 1941. His pants were covered in burs(刺果)by the time he returned home. He was curious about how the burs stuck to his clothes. When he examined one under a microscope, he saw that the bur had tiny hooks that caught in the loops of cloth. He decided to design a fastener that could do the same thing. At first, nobody took his two-piece ‘hook-and-loop’ fastener seriously. NASA, however, realized its value. It was perfect for holding objects in place during gravity-free space flights. Since the 1960s, clothing companies have been using Velcro(a French word meaning “Hook-and-Loop”), too.

In large families, it is quite often for brothers and sisters to fight with each other and then they can only go to their friends for some ideas.
It is very important for teenagers to have some good friends. Even when they are not with their friends, they usually spend a lot of time talking among themselves on the phone. This communication is very important in children’s growing up, because friends can discuss(讨论) something. These things are difficult to say to their family members.
However, parents often try to choose their children’s friends for them. Some parents may even stop their children from meeting their friends.
Have you ever thought of the following questions?
Who choose your friends?
Do you choose your friends or your friends choose you?
Have you got a good friend your parents don’t like?

Many years ago, people depended on the sun,the moon and stars to find their way around. Later, the compass was introduced. And now,we have satnav(卫星导航)systems to guide us.
A satnav system uses groups of satellites to show the user's location. They send information to the receiver, such as a smart phone,to show us where we are.
The earliest built satnav system is the Global Positioning System(GPS),which belongs to the US. Then there is Russia's Global Navigation (导航) Satellite System(GLONASS),the European Union's Galileo and China's own satellite navigation system—BeiDou.
On October 14,2017,an ARJ21700 plane, which was the first plane made in China, with the BeiDou navigation system, successfully completed a test flight. The results showed the performance of the system developed by China matches that of similar systems produced abroad, according to the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China.
Since its introduction in 2000,the BeiDou navigation system has seen an increasing number of applications linked to everyday life, from shared bikes to farming. For example, smart locks with BeiDou chips make it easier to find a bike. Farmers can use BeiDou to help plow(犁)the soil and sow seeds. BeiDou's farming applications have spread to most parts of China.
With its many uses, the Beidou navigation system is even playing a big role in the Belt and Road Initiative(一带一路).“To date, the BeiDou system has covered most parts of the Asia-Pacific area”,said the main designer of the BeiDou system.
Today, there are more than 20 BeiDou satellites above the earth, and China plans to send even more this year to expand(扩展)the BeiDou network to better serve the Belt and Road Initiative. As BeiDou expands abroad,it will be increasingly popular in the logistics(物流)industry.
