Saying “Sorry” means to apologize. This is simple and easy to understand. We learn it both as a native speaker and as a student of foreign languages.
But in Britain, it takes on another meaning. It is a cultural expression. Imagine this: a man walks down the street, looking down at his phone. A woman is walking in the opposite direction, towards the man. She sees him, but she can’t get out of the way in time. The man knocks into the woman. Who should say sorry? Naturally, the man should say sorry, because it was he who wasn’t looking where he was going. Yet in Britain, it is common for both to apologize. It is known that British people, like most people, do not enjoy conflict(冲突). So to quickly calm the situation, British people will apologize to each other.
Other times it may sound funny to hear “sorry”. Some of my friends say it at restaurants, as they ask the waiter, “Sorry, but can I order another drink?” It is not to apologize, but just to express that we need the waiter.
In Britain, “sorry” doesn’t always mean exactly what you think.

In the UK and many other western countries, complimenting someone is a useful way to help break the ice and start a nice conversation. It is normal to compliment people for their clothes, hair or taste in general. The most common compliments are on someone’s appearance (You look beautiful!), possessions (财产) (What a fantastic car!), performance (That was a really interesting speech!), skills (You speak French really well!).
If an English speaker compliments you, there are different ways to reply. Some people may say “Thank you”. They may also return the compliment (You look great, too!) or play it down (This shirt? It’s really quite old.).

The looks on the face can show one’s feelings from anger to happiness. If one’s mouth turns down and his eyes don’t have light, it shows he isn’t happy about what you are saying. The smile shows he likes what you talk. If one’s face is very cold, he may be bored and just because he can’t leave at once.
The way of standing can tell you whether one likes to listen or talk to you. If he is against (倚靠) the wall, he dislikes what you are saying. If he stands or sits straight, he must like to talk with you. Or he might feel very bored or tired. Then you can try some jokes to cheer him up.
Look where someone looks. After knowing where he looks, you can know what he needs or feels right now. If one looks around, he might be looking for something or someone.
When someone crosses his arms, it shows he wouldn’t like to accept your ideas. That means he is interested in what you say if he opens his arms.

November 21, 2016 was the 44th World Hello Day. It started on November 21, 1973. Taking part in(参加) this day couldn’t be easier. All you have to do is to greet(问候) 10 people. Do you know how people in different countries greet each other?
We Chinese usually say “nihao” when we meet someone. At school, we learn some ways to say hello in English. They are “How do you do?” and “How are you?” However, people from English-speaking countries seldom(很少) use them as greetings when they meet friends. Let’s have a look at some popular ones.
UK: “You all right?” “Yea, you?” “I’m good.” This is a usual conversation(交谈) among British friends. Girls like saying nice words when meeting each other, such as “Hey, lovely.” Sometimes, people also say “How’s it going?” But it’s not a question. You can say it when you meet someone.
US: Americans say, “What’s up?” or “What’s good?” And people usually answer with “Not much.” or “Nothing.” Children often say, “Sup?” A popular greeting is “Hey, man.” But it is only among boys. Girls may say “Hey, girl.”
Australia: If you meet an Australian, you may hear “G’day, mate.” It means “Good day.” But with a strong accent(口音), it sounds like “Good eye, mate.” Saying it! It’s an interesting accent. You can answer by the same way, “G’ day.”

Last week was Road Safety Week at Jason’s school. All the students had to take part in a talk on road safety which was given by a police officer. The following is what the police officer said.
“Most traffic accidents shouldn’t happen. They happen because people are careless. A frequent cause of traffic accidents is speed. Some people drive too quickly. This means that if they have to stop suddenly, they cannot stop quickly enough to avoid (避免) hitting other vehicles (车辆) or people. You need to remember this when you are crossing the street or walking along the sidewalk.”
“It’s not only drivers who cause accidents, however. People on foot-pedestrians, and bicycle riders often cause accidents, too. Pedestrians sometimes walk out into the street without looking. You should always look on both sides before stepping into the street.
“Do any of you ride a bike? Bicycle riders can cause accidents by changing directions suddenly or without warning other road users. Before you turn left, for example, you should check behind you to make sure there aren’t any cars, trucks or buses coming. You should show with your left hand to tell that you want to turn left. You should not turn until the street is clear.”
The rules of the road are very simple. If we learn them and obey (遵守) them, we should not have accidents any more.
