Twenty-five years ago, most British young people wanted to be doctors or lawyers in the future. If they were open-minded, they might even want to be singers. But today, things are quite different.
According to a survey, the “dream job” of young people aged between 16 and 25 in the UK is a video blogger or “vlogger”(视频博主). The survey, carried out among 1,002 people, found that as much as 40 percent of them put vlogger as their number one choice on a list of ideal jobs.
The reasons for this change are the Internet and social media. They have made it so much easier to reach everyone around the world, without having to enter an acting career in the traditional way.
“In years gone by, the biggest stars were trained by the Hollywood studios(工作室). Now, anyone with a computer camera can become a star,” a Tesco Mobile spokesperson said. “These self-made stars record(记录) and show their hobbies to their fans. Vloggers are the big stars of today because they are normal people chatting with their fans about everyday life.”
However, what people see is only the bright side of being a vlogger and they don’t notice the fact that only those who are successful get fame(名望) and money. For every success, there are a hundred others who fail. There are the dreams that come true and the dreams that still stay dreams.
Among those vloggers, some have different opinions. Fame is not what they really want. They just make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies. A Young man called David Leshaw, for example, has his own company called the Finishers Club. It’s an online platform for runners to keep a record of their races. He thinks his job helps him to show his passion(热情), and at the same time, he learns a lot from it. That’s enough for him.

Lai Yuanyuan, 30, comes from a family from a small village in Guangxi.
Like many other people in the village, her parents used to sell their farm produce at a low price because it was difficult for them to get to the market.
After coming back from her studies in Korea in 2018, Lai began to consider what she could do to improve the living standard of local farmers and help them increase their income. Lai decided to make her idea come true when she found that their futures must depend on live trade and the fast growing express delivery (快递) industry.
Therefore, she set up her own online shop and let technicians (技术人员) make a brand of local kumquats in 2019. Then she started to sold farm produce through live streaming which makes a direct way for the customers to trade with the farmers. In this way, they can greatly reduce the selling steps. Besides, live streaming is really easy to lean for the farmers.
With the improvement of kumquats’ quality, the turnover (营业额) of her online shop was up to 20 million yuan in 2020.

What will you do with a huge bag of waste when you see the four waste bins in your community(社区)? They are "Wet", "Dry", "Recyclable" and "Harmful".
Many people know the importance of waste sorting, but they just don't know what falls into which kind. This makes it seem a little time-taking and difficult.
As a pioneer city, Shenzhen is also taking steps to encourage people to do waste sorting. Not only has the government tried hard to tell the public about the different four kinds of waste through posters and media, but also it is going to give prizes to people across the city. The total prize is 62.5 million yuan. As long as they take part in waste sorting, everyone has a chance to get the money. The purpose is to help people form a green idea of thinking of waste sorting as a good behavior.
Take Meilin No. 1 Village as an example. After several months of efforts, most people there can now sort out kitchen waste before throwing it out between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day at proper places. The amount of sorted kitchen waste has increased from several hundred kilograms to about two tons.

She realized that there was a need for pre-owned clothes and then started a community clothes exchange. “The cost of living is getting high and we need choices like this,” she said.
Howes’ clothes exchange works on a very simple basis. People receive credit (信用) for bringing clothes they no longer use and the credit can be used to buy other clothes.
Although clothes exchanges aren’t new, there is increasing popularity because of social media. “I like the fact that you can come in and exchange small baby sizes for larger sizes when your kids grow,” said Cassandra, a mother of two children.
Besides, clothes exchanges are also good for the environment. The coming of fast fashion (时尚) means that people can buy more clothes that don’t last as long as they used to. Over 15 tons of unwanted clothes and textiles (纺织品) end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场) in Australia every year. Only 7% of them get recycled, so reusing clothes can cut down on the waste.
Giving pre-worn clothes a second chance will make the life of the textiles last longer and that is what clothes exchanges are all about. Perhaps it will become a start as more and more things will appear on the exchange list and become part of our lives.
1. Why did Howes start the community clothes exchange?A.Because many people didn’t like new clothes. |
B.Because she had lots of pre-owned clothes. |

B.Use her credit card. |
C.Share Howes’ project online. |
A.To tell us why fast fashion is popular. |
B.To encourage us to buy more clothes. |

They even study the darkness in space. They say the universe is about 5 percent “normal” matter—things we can see, like Earth and other planets, and the sun and other stars. But about 70 percent of the universe is something called dark energy.
Cosmologists say the other 25 percent of the universe is dark matter. Dark matter has some weight. It’s heavy so we know it’s there. But we can’t see it, so it is very hard to study something that you can’t see!
One possible kind of dark matter is a brown dwarf (褐矮星). A brown dwarf is too big to be a planet and too small to be a star. Brown dwarfs are colder than stars, and they don’t give off light that people can see. Cosmologists found them by using a telescope that finds heat. They found the first brown dwarf in 1995.
Cosmologists know a lot about one kind of dark matter—black holes. In 1783, an English astronomer, John Michell, guessed that there were black holes. But cosmologists didn’t find any black holes until 188 years later. Since then, they’ve found many black holes in space.
It’s very dark with much gravity (引力) in a black hole. There is so much gravity in a black hole that nothing can get out, not even light. This is why we can’t see them. Cosmologists find black holes by looking at things around them.
For example, stars and gases near a black hole move very fast.
Things in space can fall into a black hole, and when they do, they can never get out. But don’t worry—Earth will never fall into a black hole because there is not one close enough.
1. When did cosmologists first find black holes?A.In 1783. | B.In 1971. | C.In 1995. | D.In 1595. |

Stand in front of a mirror and look at it. Who’s that there? How much do you really know about the person in it? It’s not an easy job to know ourselves. To help students do this important task, schools across China are providing more classes and activities on self-knowledge.
Liu Yue, a teacher from Chengdu Yucai Middle School, has recently given her students a useful tool. “It’s called the Johari Window, developed by two US psychologists(心理学家),” said Liu. “It has four areas about one’s self, open area(that everyone knows about), hidden areal(that only you know), blind spot(that everyone knows except you) and unknown area(that nobody knows). Using this tool, students did a good job seeing themselves through a new lens(透镜).”
“I’m most interested in my blind spot.” said eighth-grader Yang Manfei. “So I did a survey with my friends.” The results showed that Yang easily gets anxious and impatient because of procrastination(拖延). “That’s a bad habit I’ve never realized!” Yang said.
“I find the unknown area most amazing” said Sun Bovin. “It means everyone has lots of potential!” When Sun entered middle school, he was not good at math. “But I set a goal and did lots of math exercises. Now I’m much better at math. The unknown part of my math ability is getting clearer!” Sun said.
When it came to the hidden area, most students kept silent. “I’m scared to show my secrets deep down.” said Li Yixuan. “Then one classmate stood up and said his favorite cartoon is Tom and Jerry. I thought: Am I brave enough to show my childish hobby? Perhaps not. I want my classmates to see me as a mature(成熟的) person, not a silly kid. But then I realized that I don’t find that classmate silly. I think he has the courage to be himself.”
“Show yourself and make yourself better—that’s the best lesson I learned,” Li said.
