Fun with apps

What makes smartphones fun and useful? The apps, of course. Besides (除了) some popular ones like WeChat, QQ and Tik Tok, what other apps do you know? In fact, there are many apps that you can have fun with. Check out some of them here.

Vocabulary.com

Vocabulary.com offers (提供) some help to the English learners, even a linguist (语言学家), to make their English language skills better. Why is Vocabulary.com special? That’s because it’s much more than just a dictionary (字典). It has the basic features of a dictionary app—explanations, pronunciations and grammar tips—but it also has a word learning system. This means that you can practise the words you learn through a fun game. The game will help you remember words more quickly. The app knows that even if you look up a word, you may still forget it soon. So it helps you remember words by saying them again and again in the game. It’s like carrying your English teacher in your pocket!

Prisma

Are you a fan of art? Here’s an app just for you. Prisma is a photo-editing app unlike any other. The photo filters (滤镜) on the app can make your pictures look like works of art. What’s more, the filters on Prisma never get old. Prisma offers a new photo filter every day. However, it also gives you freedom to change the filters with image-enhancing (图像增强) tools. Imagine you can have a picture painted by Picasso, too! How amazing!

It is a kind of air pollution caused by cars and factories. Smog will not be good for your health, especially lungs(肺). It can make you cough and cause skin and eye problems. Paper and cotton masks cannot help you in the haze weather. Some special masks, such as N95 masks, can keep you from breathing in the particles in the air.

Tasty bananas are hard to turn down. They taste good and you don’t have to wash them before eating them. However, British scientists say that the fruit may disappear by 2050.

One reason for this is climate(气候) change. Scientists at the University of Exeter collected data from 27 countries that produce 86 percent of the world’s bananas. They found that climate change has improved growing conditions in 21 of these countries. For the past 60 years, the annual yields(年均产量) have been increasing by 1.37 tonnes(公吨) bananas per hectare. In this way, if temperatures rises all the time, this advantage will disappear. Ten of the countries, including India, the world’s biggest producer of bananas, will produce fewer bananas. By 2050, the fruit may die out.

Shouldn’t banana plants grow more easily if it’s hotter outside? In fact, the perfect temperature for growing banana plants is between 24°C and 32°C. If temperatures get too high, they will stop growing.

Diseases are another danger to banana plants. Unlike other crops, the banana plants we grow come from shoot cuttings(茎段) rather than seeds(种子). This shows that all banana plants have the same genotype(基因型). In other words, if a disease is able to kill one plant, it could kill them all.

For example, one serious disease is called Panama. Caused by fungi(真菌) in the soil, it spreads easily. It has spread across South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia. If one banana plantation(种植园) suffers from the disease, it will take 30 years until it is able to grow banana plants again. Scientists have to find a cure for this disease.

【推荐3】Do you know how many languages there are in the world? According to the researches, the answer is about 7,000, but sadly they predict that nearly half are likely to die out by the end of the century. This is often because speakers are elderly or because the main language of a country has taken over.

Luckily for us, some people are making extraordinary efforts to record languages for history. One of them is Steven Bird. He developed a phone app to translate Tembe, the language of a small tribe (部落) in Brazil’s Amazon region (地区). Tembe speakers spoke into their phones and then other tribe members interpreted what they said into Portuguese. As Tembe has no written language, researchers can turn it into a set of symbols to represent sounds, but this takes one hour for every minute of speech!

The Piraha tribe also lives in the Amazon region of Brazil. Daniel Everett’s research into their language has shocked many people because some things about it are completely different from any other language. For example, Piraha has no words for colours and no way to count.

Perhaps most interesting of all, there is no way to talk about the past. Everett’s explanation is that jungle life relies on understanding and noticing everything around you at all times, so it is a waste of time thinking about the past.

Globally, there are around 470 languages with fewer than 100 speakers, including one Mexican language with only two and unluckily, they refuse to talk to one another! The loss of so many languages means that we could end up with only a few languages left. That would be sad because languages are an important part of who we are. When they disappear, so do our traditions and culture.

1. What does the underlined word “interpreted” in Paragraph 2mean?
A.Considered.B.Translated.C.Recorded.D.Divided.
2. What is special about the Piraha language?
A.It has no written form.B.It can’t describe the past.
C.It can tell colors and numbers.D.It depends on oral storytelling.
3. What is the possible results of losing many languages according to the text?
A.Loss of cultural traditions.B.Increased demand of languages.
C.Difficulty of communication.D.Development for historical culture.
4. What is the purpose of the text?(请用15词以内回答)
