Emily Bhatnagar has always loved reading. “Growing up, I was really shy. So I turned to books,” she said. In 2019, her dad got cancer (癌症). It was very serious. Books became an even bigger support for Emily.
When her dad got better, Emily came up with a plan to help others, “The idea came from just great gratitude (感激),” she says. “But also a bit of sadness that there were kids who were fighting the same illness.”
Emily started a book drive (捐书活动) in her hometown. The goal (目标) was to collect books and give them to kids being treated for cancer in local hospitals. Emily and her father are very close. When her father learned of her plans for the book drive, he wasn’t surprised. “She was always interested in books and she always wanted to do things for the neighborhood,” he says.
Since the start of the book drive Emily has collected more than 10,000 books. Emily had no idea how much attention her work would get. She started by posting on social media. She asked people to donate (捐赠) books. “I was expecting maybe two or three neighbours to do it.” she says. But many people helped her and the book drive became a big success!
Emily has given books to many places. One is the Children’s Inn at the National Institutes of Health. Aisha Campbell is a director there. She says, “Donations like Emily’s Donations share a piece of the world with kids and families. They may not have experienced such things.”
Emily still runs the book drive. The memory of meeting the children she helps stays with her. “It was the best day of my lift,” she says. “I realized I wanted to do this kind of work forever. ”

“Is that all?”
“Is he giving up?”
But Mark wasn’t giving up. He rested on the hot sand. He ate some chocolate biscuits and fed energy back into his body. Slowly his strength and determination returned. “Would the crayfish(鳌虾) still be there?” He wondered.
Mark knew crayfish usually hid in the darkness beneath rocks, only coming out at night to feed. How long would his crayfish remain there before it went back under the rocks?
Mark forced himself to be patient. He lay on his back in the sun, eyes closed, nearly asleep. Excitement and speed would only waste energy. Finally Mark rose and went back into the water.
The children, watching from the shore, were silent. They waited, twisting(缠绕) curls of hair in their fingers, digging their teeth into their knees.
Out in the bay, the crayfish was still there. Its feelers moved in the currents(水流).
Mark took long, slow, deep breaths. He cheered himself up with encouraging words, “I can do it. I can. I can do it.” Over and over he told himself, hoping his mind would get the idea and believe it.
Down he dived. Down. Down. Down. Lungs bursting, ears popping, eyes painful. Nearly there. Pressure(压力), Pressure. He reached out his hands. Reaching. Reaching. But it was no good. He couldn’t make it. Only an arm’s length away, but he couldn’t reach the crayfish.
Up he went. Tired, burning, disappointed, annoyed. Floating on the surface, he told himself off.
“You hurried too much. Take your time. Prepare yourself. Don’t dive until everything feels right,” he spoke to himself calmly, and he felt the confidence building up inside him. “I can do it. I can do it.” He felt good. It was going to be a good dive. Breathing deeply, relaxing, concentrating. Three more breaths. One, two, three. Down!

He walked over to a young girl who was crying. As he talked to her, I could see from his body language that he was trying to calm (使平静) her down. When I joined them, I realized that she had been homeless for some time. She told Shane that all she wanted was to go to her sister’s house in another city.
Some people would have handed her some money, wished her lunch or maybe allowed her to make a call. Shane did much more. He said, “Kelly, I can’t leave her here like this. Sometimes people need someone not only to help them but to believe they’re telling the truth.”
I was a bit cold, so we had an idea to take her home. When I asked her if she’d like to go home with us, she thanked me about a million times with tears in her eyes.
We went home and I gave her some clean clothes to wear and told her she could use the shower. We ate something. Finally, she told us her story.
In the morning, she was finally able to get a hold of her sister, so she had a place to go to. Shane drove her to the bus station and bought her a ticket.
