A special kitchen is next to Jiangxi Children’s Hospital in Nanchang. Around meal time, families of the hospital’s patients (病人) use the kitchen to cook food for their loved ones.
The kitchen was a breakfast stall (摊) at first, run by a husband and wife, Wan Zuocheng and Xiong Gengxiang. One day, in 2023, a young woman asked if she could use it to cook food for her son who was in hospital, Wan and Xiong agreed. Later on, they gave cookers to people for free to help them cook for family in hospital. As it’s known to more people, they began to call their breakfast stall “kitchen of love” because in their eyes it was a place to pass on love.
With more and ore people coming and cooking, Wang and Xiong had to turn their stall into a big kitchen while people began to show their willingness to share the costs (费用). Wan and Xiong finally agreed to set a very low price: 1 yuan to cook a dish and 1.5 yuan to cook soup.
Now they are over 60, but to make it easier for others to use the kitchen, they still get up at 4 a.m every day to boil water and cook rice.
Wan and Xiong always listen to patients’ families talking about their experiences because they believe listening to those people’s experiences can make them feel better. Xiong says, “It’s necessary to take medicine when we’re ill, however, 有时候爱比其它任何药物都有效. I feel really happy to run the kitchen and help others.”
1. Why did people call Wan and Xiong’s breakfast stall “kitchen of love”?2. Is the kitchen free to people now?
3. What do you think of Wan and Xiong?

Lucy, a nine-year-old little girl, grew up in a small village near a forest. She liked feeding birds bread and knew a lot about them.
One summer morning, she was listening to birds’ joyful singing when she heard a sharp whistle (哨声) not far away. It wasn’t a friendly bird’s whistle but a whistle of a person.
“Hello, little girl,” a young man greeted cheerfully. Lucy looked up into a face of a tall young man carrying a gun. Then the young man explained that he was a scientist, who collected birds.
“Do you put them in a cage?” Lucy asked. “No,” he answered slowly, “I shoot them and keep them with special chemicals (药剂). I have over 100 different kinds of birds from all over the United States at home.” Lucy felt surprised to hear that. “I have been looking for a heron (苍鹭) not far from here. It’s a tall, white, strange bird with long thin legs. It often lives at the top of a tall tree. Have you seen it? I will give $10 to the person who shows me where the white bird is.” said the man.
Lucy’s heart began to beat fast. She knew that strange white bird! She had seen it on the other side of the forest. She remembered how the white bird came flying through the golden air every morning. But Lucy decided not to speak a word. She would not tell the bird’s secret and give its life away. They were good friends. So Lucy shook her head and the young man had to go away disappointedly.

Last Sunday was a special day for me. It was a beautiful day at first and the weather was sunny and fine. My friend Henry and I decided to go sailing (航行) in our small boat. We prepared food for our trip. We had got everything prepared and we took our fishing tools (工具) because fishing is our favorite thing. We met at 7 o’clock in the morning.
We sailed only 5 km in the sea when suddenly the sky became dark and cloudy. It started to rain heavily. We felt very afraid when high waves (海浪) started shaking our boat. We didn’t know what to do and we thought it was our end. Hopefully, I had my phone on me. I called the police. They said they would send a helicopter (直升机) to save us.
Ten minutes later, our boat turned over. Henry couldn’t swim and I tried to help him float (漂浮) on water, but it was not easy. I became tired and I thought we would die. Luckily, the helicopter came at that time and saved us. I felt very happy and excited in the helicopter.
I will never forget that day.
Yours,
Tony
