I am Lisa. A year ago, I volunteered (志愿) to teach at a small village school in Guangxi Province. As a volunteer teacher, I travelled a long way to the remote area. On my way there, I thought about the village, the school and the children there. However, my heart sank when I arrived there. It wasn’t what I expected (期待). It didn’t look like a school at all! The school had only three rooms, one for Grades 1, 2, and 3, and the other for Grades 4, 5 and 6. There was a third one for me.
The children welcomed me warmly on my first day. They asked me a lot of questions, and I told them stories about myself and my life in Shanghai. The next day, I gave them a test to find out their level. To my surprise, though the test was very easy, over half of the students failed it, yet they all wanted to learn new things. I knew they needed me.
I was busy preparing lessons, correcting test papers every night. I enjoyed teaching these lovely and hard-working children, and I could see that they were making progress with my help. I have also learned a lot from them. I understand their lives better, and we are now good friends.
I have worked in Long Zhou for a year now. I’m very happy, and the experience has been very useful for me. I love the small village and the children. In fact, I would like to go on working here.

On a sunny day of September, I sat with my friend in a wellknown coffee shop in a neighboring town. As we enjoyed our coffee, a young man wearing glasses entered and sat at an empty table beside us. He called the waiter and placed his order, saying, “Two cups of coffee, one of them there on the wall.” We heard this order with rather interest and found that he was served with only one cup of coffee but he paid for two. When he left, the waiter put a piece of paper on the wall, saying “A Cup of Coffee”.
While we were still there, two other middleaged men entered and ordered three cups of coffee, two on the table and one on the wall. They had two cups of coffee but paid for three and left. This time also, the waiter did the same. He put a piece of paper on the wall saying, “A Cup of Coffee.” It was something special and perplexing for us. We finished our coffee, paid the bill and left.
After a few days, we had a chance to go to this coffee shop again. While we were enjoying our coffee, a poorlydressed man arrived at the shop. As he seated himself, he looked at the wall and said, “One cup of coffee from the wall.” The waiter served coffee to this man as usual. The man had his coffee and left without paying.
We were amazed to watch all this, as the waiter took off a piece of paper from the wall and threw it into the dustbin. Now it was no surprise for us — what was happening was very clear. The great respect for the men in need shown by the residents(居民) of this town made our eyes in tears.

One day, when my mother went home after work and found a lot of rubbish in our house, she was so angry at me. And I was told that I must do some housework from then on. At first, I was unhappy, because I thought housework was what grown-ups should do. Although I was unwilling to do the housework, I followed what my mother said. That day, I spent 6 hours cleaning up all the rooms. After finishing it, I was so tired. At that time, I understood doing housework was actually harder than I used to imagine. How tired my parents were! They had to do housework after whole day's work. I thought I must share the chores with them. I began to learn to do more housework. They were glad to see my change. Now I have a much closer relationship with my parents.
As a member of a family, we should take responsibility for the family. We are supposed to share the housework together and help our parents as much as possible.

But it’s also important to bring things you may find trivial, like toys or something you hold dear. You may think it unnecessary, but you’ll find that having something that reminds you of home can help you a lot.
When I first arrived, I only brought those things on the school list. However, there was an empty feeling in my heart, a sense of loneliness. There were no toys to hug at night, nor anything I could look at and be reminded of home. That’s when I realized that though we saw things like toys as unnecessary, we needed them more than anything else.
It’s also important to make friends. Though most parents prefer you find someone with good grades, I think it’s better to choose someone with a good heart. If you’re introverted(内向的), it is even more important to greet everyone in your dorm. That’s because once you keep yourself away from others, people may think you are cold and aloof(冷漠的). A friend of mine once told me, “No. matter how much you’ve grown, you’re still a kid at heart.” I’ve come to realize that it is true. No matter how old we are, our inner(内心的) selves still need love and comfort. With a friend and a toy in hand, I hope you’ll find joy no matter where you are.
