What are you wearing today? Now, more and more young Chinese people are wearing hanfu. Ran Dan is one of them. She likes hanfu a lot. She learned about hanfu in 2011 when she saw some hanfu photos. That year she had her first set of hanfu. Now, she has more than 50.
Some people only wear hanfu for special (特别的) activities, but others wear it every day: to work, to school, or even only to go shopping. Ran is the latter (后者). Many people think hanfu is inconvenient (不方便的) in their life. “Well, there are many kinds of hanfu. Wide and long hanfu may not be convenient, but some kinds of hanfu do not affect (影响) our lives at all.” she said.
There are more than two million people buying hanfu in China so far. There are more and more shops selling hanfu online. “Students like to buy hanfu most in my shop”, said Daoding, who runs an online hanfu shop.
Now many schools have hanfu clubs and they are popular with students. In the clubs, students can join in different kinds of activities like making hanfu. The schools think hanfu is a good way for young people to learn about Chinese culture. And a lot of students in hanfu clubs love hanfu because it’s happy and relaxing to wear hanfu.

In 1994, Richard Sears decided to put the ancient Chinese characters online. Then, in 2002, he did it. That is the beginning of the Chinese Etymology (汉字字源) website, “My website did not get much attention for the next few years. Until one day in 2011, it suddenly got a lot of attention. I got a few thousand emails, and a few million visitors and people started calling me ‘Uncle Hanzi’,” Sears said with a smile. Hanzi means Chinese characters. He has put more than 96, 000 ancient Chinese characters onto the website. “When I study each character, I wonder what the ancient Chinese thought,” said Sears.
After visiting many Chinese cities, Sears learned more about China and ancient Chinese culture. He said when he came to China in the last century, few Chinese could speak good English. “However, you can hear English in many places in China now. Chinese language and culture were mysterious and not known by people in most countries then, but now, more and more people in the world are learning Chinese, even Chinese history. Traditional Chinese medicine and so on,” Sears added.
At present, the 70-year-old American has made his home in China. “When I die, I hope my website will live on, and I’m planning to write a book about my research. This will be my gift to China,” he said.

I'm sure you all know how important recycling is. Recycling is when you take old things and turn them into new things. It sounds like magic. But it's actually very scientific.
Material | The first thing you have to do is to collect items that can be recycled: Only certain materials can be recycled. These include things made out of paper, metal, glass and plastic. |
Daily things | Can you think of everyday items made of these materials? Soda cans are good example. They are made out of metal. Magazines and newspaper are made out of paper. So are cereal boxes. Some bottles of juice are made out of glass. Bags and yogurt containers are made out of plastic. There are many things that can be recycled. |
Loop | These things are usually stamped with the recycling loop. It has 3 arrows that go in a triangular(三角形)circle. This shows that cycle(循环)continues. Items are thrown away but continue their lives as something else. |
Process | Let's go back to the process of recycling. ①The items are put in a recycling bin. ②A truck carries the items to a recycling plant.③ The materials are separated and squashed(被压扁成)into square cubes.④ Companies buy and turn them into new products. |

Kiska, the last captive killer whale in Canada—also known as “the loneliest whale in the world”—died in March, 2023.
In 1979, when Kiska was three years old, she was caught from the North Atlantic Ocean and taken to an aquarium in Iceland. She lived with four other young killer whales, including Keiko, the future star of the “Free Willy” movies. In the same year, she and Keiko were sold to a theme park in Canada called Marineland. The pair lived there together in the 1980s. Keiko was later saved and sent to the ocean near Iceland, but Kiska had to spend her whole life in Marineland.
Kiska suffered a lot while living in Marineland. She was trained to perform for the public for nearly thirty years, even in a bad health condition. Throughout her life in captivity, she gave birth to five babies. Sadly, all of them died at young ages. After that, Kiska lived alone in the pool. No family members swam by her side. No friends invited her to play. She really wanted to go back to the ocean, but she couldn’t.
Killer whales are able to feel deep emotions better than humans, so it is hard to imagine the trauma Kiska experienced. She spent her final years swimming in endless circles or simply floating lifelessly. Kiska even hit her head against the pool purposefully.
Videos of Kiska’s self-harm received over 229, 000 views online. What happened to her shows how cruel it is to keep animals in captivity. In 2019, Canada banned the captivity of whales. Hopefully there will be more ways to help as many captive animals as possible return to nature.
1. When was Kiska sent to Marineland, Canada?A.In 1976. | B.In 1979. | C.In 1980. | D.In 1982. |

Shadow puppetry is a form of theater that uses puppets made from leather (皮) or paper, accompanied (伴奏) by music and singing. It was invented during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC—AD 24). It tells us about folk tales and historical stories, passing down culture and customs over thousands of years.
Shadow puppetry is all about creating the puppets and performing with them. Wang’s hometown of Hua county, Shanxi, is known as the birthplace of the folk art.
Puppet-makers must follow 24 steps to make the puppets including washing the leather, carving (雕刻) and painting, according to Wang. Carving is the most difficult part.
“We have a special carving skill—moving the leather under the knife,”Wang said. It took Wang three years to master this skill. She used a brick (砖块) to strengthen her left hand while practicing. It takes about 3, 000 carves to make a shadow puppet. “The complex (复杂的) steps make it hard to hand down the folk art,” she said.
But Wang has found a way to do so. In recent years, she has made shadow puppets based on some cartoon series and has given a live-streaming performance.
She used colors like blue and purple that were hardly seen in shadow puppetry and added more sticks to the puppets to make the performance more lively. “I hope more and more young people enjoy shadow puppetry and pass it down,” she said.
