March is the month to learn from Lei Feng in China. Lei Feng is probably the most famous Chinese soldier (军人). He was born in 1940 in Changsha, Hunan. Lei Feng lost his parents when he was very young. His neighbors brought him up. He became a soldier at the age of 19. He helped many people during his 22 years of life. He passed away (去世) more than 60 years ago. But the “Lei Feng spirit (精神) ” still inspires (激励) Chinese people to do volunteer work.

Lei Feng often spent his spare time and money in helping people in need. He did many good deeds (善举) in his life. For example, he gave his own money to the parents of another soldier, and bought tickets for a woman he didn't know without telling her his name. Lei Feng hardly ever spoke about what he did. After he died, people found his diary and learned about him. “There is a limit (限度) to one's life, but no limit to serving the people,” Lei Feng once said in his diary.

In 1963, Chairman Mao Zedong called on (号召) the nation to learn from Lei Feng. Lei Feng is more than a name in China; he’s a symbol of selflessness (无私). Lei Feng is a role model and all Chinese young people can learn from him. The spirit of Lei Feng will always be with us.

“Thank you, you guys are too sweet!” the server said, holding back tears.

But these good deeds aren’t as random (随机的) as you might think. They’re part of an important list. “Sixty-one different acts of kindness,” said Sarah McKelvey, Alex’s mom. And that was just for Sunday.
