Why did Chinese people have more than one name in ancient times (古代)? In ancient China, people’s names had three parts, their family name, given name and courtesy name. Take famous poet (诗人) Li Bai for example. His family name, which came from his father’s name was Li. His given name was Bai, and his courtesy name was Taibai.
Family members call people’s given name, But in social life, they call each other by their courtesy names to show respect (尊重). This was mostly called by people of similar age. If you were talking about yourself, or if your parents were talking about you, the given name would be used instead of courtesy name.
Men would get their courtesy name when they turned 20. It was a symbol of adulthood (成人礼). Women would get their courtesy name after getting married (结婚).
One’s courtesy name often had something to do with one’s given name. For example, Zhuge Liang’s given name was Liang, which means “bright”. His courtesy name was Kongming, which means “very bright”.

These shows bring us back to the Han dynasty (朝代). We learn more about the history, culture and beauty from them.
Hanfu hasn’t been in the same style since the Han dynasty. However, this kind of clothes has something in common. They all have large soft robes (袍子), with sleeves that hang down to the knees, so the hands can’t be seen.
In modern China, the hanfu lovers are from history fans, cartoon fans to clothes fans.
“Clothes are the basic part of culture, so both the traditional clothes and modern clothes play the same role in culture,” said Zhang Jun, a famous reporter. “If the people and the country do not even understand our traditional clothes or don’t wear them, how can we talk about other important parts of our culture?”

People can pay to play with the otters there and to take photos with them. In Indonesia, people go swimming with their pet otters and take funny videos. These photos and videos posted online have interested more people to buy otters as pets.
However, these enjoyable photos and videos hide the damage that the online trade is doing to otters. In fact, wild otters are facing many threats — they have long been hunted for their coats; in some places, fishermen have been killing otters in order to stop them from eating fish; and now, the online pet trade has become another big problem for otters.
In the wild, baby otters usually stay with their mothers during their first year of life. According to a report, 70% of the otters sold online are under one year old. These baby otters have been stolen from their mothers. When they are kept as pets by humans, they do not live full and natural lives.
Otters are very social. They live in family groups of up to 15 in the wild. Keeping an otter as a pet can make it very sad and lonely.
These animals also need enough space to swim. Their owners’ bathtubs(浴缸)or pools are nowhere near as large as the bodies of water in the wild.
On the other hand, it’s not proper to keep otters as pets at home. They have a very special fishy smell. If they are kept indoors, they will leave a lot of waste around the house. This would make the smell even more unpleasant. Besides, when otters are unhappy, they will make loud noises and even attack(攻击)people. If a person is hurt by an otter, he or she needs to go to hospital at once.
So we should stop the otter pet trade and never share photos and videos about them online.

In 2015, Oxford Dictionaries chose Face With Tears of Joy () as its Word of the Year. Two years later, Hollywood tried to follow the fad (短暂的狂热) with The Emoji Movie, though the reviews for the film were poor.
However, some language experts are against this form of communication. They consider it a step back into the dark ages of illiteracy (没文化). Emojis, they say, are making us dumb communicators. People are depending on these “picture characters”, rather than words, to express their feelings.
I want to challenge this point of view. I’m afraid these experts have misunderstood how communication works.
Emojis aren’t replacing language. Instead, they are making our message more understandable by filling in the emotional signals (感情符号). Here is an example. Without an emoji, what I mean by the following message would be puzzling: “Hey, I fell down and banged (磕) my head on the kitchen wall.” My addressee (收信人) might have difficulty working out my true feelings. Should he laugh (“Ha-ha! You’re-so-silly!”) or take pity on me (“Oh, hope it doesn’t hurt too badly.”)? The addition of an emoji (or
) will spell out the meaning behind my words. Emojis are to text messages what body language is to spoken communication. They allow us to communicate more effectively.
So we probably don’t have to worry about this fad as long as we don’t overuse emojis. These lovely characters, on the whole, are helpful.
