It was Saturday again. Grace and Karen disliked Saturdays. That was another thing the twins had in common. They shared the same clothes and tied their hair in the same manner. In fact, it was hard for their classmates and teachers to tell the differences between them sometimes.
Unlike their classmates, they had to get up early at seven every Saturday to prepare for their lessons. Grace had to attend the art lesson and Karen had to attend her ballet lesson. “How I wish I could do something different today,” said the twins with one voice. All at once, an idea came to Grace and Karen at the same time. “How would you like to be me for a day?” They asked each other. It seemed like a wonderful plan to them. After giving each other a description (描述)of their own friends, Grace put on Karen’s ballet dress while Karen put Grace’s brushes and paints into her bag. Then they left for their classes.
When art lesson started, Karen was lost. Unlike Grace, Karen was poor at drawing. When the art lesson finally ended, Karen didn’t dare(敢)to hand in her work.
At the same time, Grace was struggling (挣扎) in the ballet class as well. As she had no idea about the dance steps, she had to follow her classmates blindly. As a result, she kept knocking into them. Their ballet teacher became impatient with her, “Karen, you should remember the basic steps. You can’t depend on copying what others are doing.”
When Karen and Grace got home, they were tired. They decided that they would never try to be someone else they were not. It seemed that the grass was not always greener on the other side.

3. If you have the chance, would you like to be someone else for a day? Why or why not?
Returning a Father’s Love
He was a single father, raising a 5-year-old boy by himself. He often worried about his son growing up without a mother to care for him.
One day, he went away on business, leaving the child alone. He worried about his child all the way, not knowing if he had eaten. But his child always told him not to worry. He ran home as soon as possible after he finished his work.
When he got home, the child was deep asleep. He was tired out. He was about to sleep when he was surprised to find an overturned (翻到的) bowl of noodles under the quilt (被子). He hit his sleeping son angrily, “Why are you so careless, making the quilt dirty? Who will wash it?” It was the first time that he had hit his boy after his wife’s death.
“Sorry, but…” the child explained with tears in his eyes, “This is your supper, Daddy.” In order to let his father eat dinner when he arrived home, the child prepared two bowls of noodles: one for himself, the other for his father. He was afraid that his father’s noodles would get cold, so he placed them under the quilt!
Hearing this, the father felt deeply moved and felt sorry about what he did to his son — he hugged his son tightly without saying a word.

I LOVE FOOTBALL. I started playing when I was nine years old, and football got me through hard time. It helped make me who I am today.
My story with football started when my dad dragged me to join a league. Kicking and crying, I had no desire to be there. I was weak and the smallest kid by far. Fear turned to awe when I met my coach, Jim Graham, a huge and strong guy. And he was really strict.
Coach Graham always rode me hard. I remember one practice. “You’re doing it all wrong Pausch. Go back! Do it again!” I tried to do what he wanted but it wasn’t enough. “You owe me, Pausch! Do push-ups after practice.”
When I was finally allowed to leave, one of the assistant coaches came up to me. “Coach Graham rode you pretty hard, didn’t he?” he said.
“Yeah.”
“That’s a good thing,” the assistant told me. “When you’ re doing badly and nobody says anything to you anymore, that means they’ve given up on you.”
That conversation has stuck with me my whole life. When you see yourself doing something badly and nobody’s willing to tell you anymore, that’s a bad place to be. You may not want to hear it, but the people who point out your mistakes are often the ones telling you they still love you and care about you, and want to make you better.
There’s a lot of talk these days about giving children self-esteem. It’s not something you can give; it’s something they have to build. Coach Graham knew there was really only one way to teach kids how to develop self-esteem: You give them something they can’t do; they work hard until they find they can do it, and you just keep repeating the process.
When Coach Graham first got hold of me, I was this weak kid with no skills and no physical strength. But he made me understand that if I work hard enough, there will be things I can do tomorrow that I can’t do today. I really felt thankful to Coach Graham for what he had done to me, though it surely didn’t feel good at that time to do so many push-ups after practice.

【推荐2】To Have A Not-to-do List
Like most people, you probably have a to-do list to help you finish a task. However, I would also suggest you make a not-to-do list. This list works well with the to-do list and it might be even more important. Let me explain.
This is Mike. He loves video games and plays them every day. But he also has an important exam coming up. So Mike puts studying on his to-do list. That day, Mike picked up the books and studied for half an hour. Then he took a short break and played some games. However, he got so into the game that he played for three hours.
The next day, Mike took on the challenge of studying in a different way. He decided to make a not-to-do list as well. And what he wrote down was: “No video games until 7:00 pm.” Mike went to study, did it for half an hour, and then took a break. However, he didn’t get on his computer like the day before because he didn’t allow himself to play at that time. Instead, he drank a glass of water. Then he returned to studying for three hours more on that day.
Mike realized that having no restrictions was the problem. He was always choosing between work and free time. Because enjoying himself was an easier choice, hardly any work got done as a result. So Mike made a not-to-do list.
Sometimes what you choose not to do matters more than what you decide to do. We shouldn’t just limit our “bad” behaviors but our “good” behaviors as well. For example, practicing the piano could be considered a good habit. But when you have other more important things in the moment, the piano becomes nothing more than a distraction. However, there’s one thing that should never end up on your not-to-do list. That is to learn something new every day.
1. Did a to-do list help Mike prepare for his exam well?2. What did Mike write on his not-to-do list?
3. How long did Mike study the next day?
4. According to Paragraph 4, what problem has Mike realized?
5. What do you want to write on it if you have a not-to-do list?
