The Chicken and the Eagle (鹰)
One day, a boy picks up an eagle egg on his way home. He takes it home and puts it with chicken eggs.
Some days later, the eagle egg hatches(孵化), and a beautiful eagle is born. He loves his home and family. He lives a happy life with them. He thinks he is nothing more than a chicken. But when he sees eagles fly high in the sky, he cries, Oh, I wish I could fly like those birds.
The chickens laugh and tell him, You cannot fly like those birds. You are a chicken, and chickens don't fly.
The eagle still has the dream to fly. But each time he tells his dream to the chickens, they tell him, You can never fly." Many times later, the eagle believes the chickens and stops dreaming. Finally, after a long life as a chicken, the eagle dies.

"The atlas(地图册)I grew up with was a hand﹣me﹣down from my brother, dog﹣eared Collins World Atlas. This became my favourite book, and I was touched that he thought I was grown﹣up enough to appreciate it. After wars, my atlas was considered incorrect and out of date and I had to buy a new one for school. But I still missed the well﹣used pages and old﹣book smell. I carefully tore (撕)pages out of my old atlas, and glued them on cardboard. My father helped me to cut them into jigsaw puzzles as gifts for my friends. Google search is an easy way to find various places, but I still prefer to search for exotic places in a real﹣turning atlas. One day it may be priceless!"

"When I was 13, I wanted a horse of my own. Finally my parents softened to the idea and bought me a beautiful part﹣Arabian horse. To settle on a name, my father suggested I open our atlas to the page on Saudi Arabia, close my eyes and place my finger randomly(随机地)on the page. Bandar Shah(Royal Port)was a wonderful horse."

"When I retired after 20 years with the same boss Reader's Digest, I did not expect to be given a gold watch. I certainly did not expect to be given a Reader's Digest Atlas of the World. But that is exactly what my co﹣workers decided I needed. For the next 15 years that atlas was used by my family to settle geographic arguments and plan trips abroad. Sadly, wear and tear forced its retirement, too."

Mr. Dawson was a man with a bad temper(脾气). And everyone in town knew it. Kids were afraid to go into his yard to pick apples.
One Friday, 12-year-old Janet and her friend Amy had to walk past Mr. Dawson’s house. When Janet saw him, she suggested crossing to the other side. But Amy said they needn’t.
When Mr. Dawson saw Amy, he smiled and said, “Hello, Amy! I see you have a new friend with you today.” Amy smiled back and told him that Janet would stay with her that night. Mr. Dawson looked friendly and gave them each a fresh apple. The girls were glad to get them.
Later Janet asked Amy, “Everyone says he is the most unwelcome person in town. Why was he so kind to us?” Amy explained that when she first walked past his house, she was also afraid of him. But she pretended there was an invisible( 看不见的 )smile on his face and then started talking to her . Just a “hello” at first, and then more.
“An invisible smile?” Janet was puzzled, “Yes,” answered Amy, “My grandma told me to think so. She says smiles can run around. If we keep smiling at someone, sooner or later he will really smile back.”
Remember what Amy’s grandma said, and we will find that most people can’t refuse our smile.
