If you spend some time in an English speaking country, you might hear the term “etiquette”. It means normal and social behavior. This may seem like a difficult word at first, but it can be very useful to understand.
Etiquette is not the same in every culture or in every situation. For example, standing very close to the person you are talking with is quite common in some Asian countries. However, if you do this in Europe, some people might feel uncomfortable. Even in China, we all know that etiquette is not the same in all situations. Perhaps we think that talking loudly in our own homes is fine, but there are other places where talking loudly is not allowed. For example, most people would agree that talking loudly in a library, a museum or a movie theater is impolite. Even if you are with your friends, it is better to keep your voice down in public places.
If we see someone breaking the rules of etiquette, we may politely give them some suggestions. One of the most polite ways is to ask someone, “Would you mind doing this?” or “Would you mind not doing that?” People don’t usually like to be criticized, so we have to be careful how we do this.
Although rules of etiquette can often be different, some rules are the same almost everywhere in the world! For example, dropping litter is almost never allowed. If you see someone you know doing this, you can ask him, “Would you mind picking it up?”

Different people have different ideas about time. People in the U.S. think that it is important to know the time. In cities in America, there are clocks in stations, factories and other buildings. Radio announcers (播音员) tell you the correct time during the day. Most Americans also have watches with them wherever they go. They want to do certain things at certain time. They don’t like to be late.
But time is not so important to everybody in the world. When you visit a country in South America, you will find that people there don’t like to rush. If you had an appointment with somebody, he could probably be late, because he may not want to arrive on time.
In South America, even the radio program may not begin on time. The men on the radio may not think it is important to tell the exact time. Indoors:
■ Turn the tap off while your are brushing your teeth, washing your hands, doing dishes , taking a shower and so on.
■ Don’t wash clothes too often. When you use the washing machines, make sure there is not only a pair of trousers in it. You should wash as many clothes as possible once.
■ Catch the cold water that comes out of the tap or shower while you are waiting for the hot water. Use the water to water plants, wash your toilet or do any other things.
Outdoors:
■ Water the garden and grass at night. This gives water more time to get into the earth without evaporation (蒸发) from the day’s heat.

According to the World Health Organization, loneliness can be bad for one’s health. In many countries, even young people are now feeling lonely. What can be done to fight this widespread loneliness? Asa Koski is a social scientist in Sweden. She believes one way is to encourage people to say hello to strangers. She recently started the “Sag hej! (Say hi!) project”.
Winters where Koski lives are long and cold. But she doesn’t think the weather alone has caused young Swedes to feel lonely. People now depend too much on digital (数码的) technology. It is a far bigger reason.
American-born Lauren Ell first came to Sweden as an exchange student in 2006. “Making friends with Swedish students was almost impossible,” she says. Like Koski, she thinks digital technology is part of the problem. Even in 2006, many of her classmates would just go home after school and play video games. She thinks the “Sag hej! project” could be a good way to start solving the problem.
Teachers in Lulea have reported that the project is already working successfully. Students are challenging each other to see how many “hi’s” they can get in a day.
“It’s not only close friendships that matter,” says Koski. “Saying hello to someone sends out a message that you’re willing to talk to them. For some people, that can really make a difference.”

【推荐3】Why did Chinese people have more than one name in the old days? At that time, people’s names had three parts, their family name, given name and courtesy name. We all know the famous poet Li Bai. His family name was Li. His given name was Bai, and his courtesy name was Taibai.
People used their given names when they were among family members. But in social life, they called each other by their courtesy names to show respect. This was mostly done among people of similar age. If you were talking about yourself, or if your elders were talking about you, the given name would be used instead of the courtesy name.
Men would get their courtesy names when they turned 20. It was a symbol of adulthood (成年礼). Women would get their courtesy names after getting married.
One’s courtesy name often had something to do with one’s given name. For example, the name of Mencius was Meng Ke. His courtesy name was Ziyu. Both Ke and Ziyu mean “carriage (马车)” Zhuge Liang’s given name was Liang, which means “bright”. His courtesy name was Kongming, which means “very bright”.
