Oh, the things that I should see if I had the power of sight for just three days!
The first day would be a busy one. I should call to me all my dear friends and look long into their faces, imprinting(刻上) upon my mind the outside evidences of the beauty that is within them. I should also view the small simple things of my home. I want to see the pictures on the walls, the lovely small furniture that changes a house into home. My eyes would rest respectfully on the books in dot-raised type which I have read, but they would be more interested in the printed books which seeing people can read, for during the long night of my life the books I have read and those which have been read to me have built themselves into a great shining lighthouse, showing me the deepest channels of human life and the human spirit.
In the afternoon of that first seeing day, I should take a long walk in the woods and rest my eyes on the beauties of the world of Nature trying to enjoy in a few hours the brilliance(光辉)which is presenting itself to those who can see. On the way home from my woodland trip, my path would lie close to a farm so that I might see the patient horses working in the field and the peaceful men living close to the soil.
When darkness had fallen, I should experience the double joy of being able to see, thanks to the man-made light which man has created to enlarge the power of his sight when Nature brings darkness
In the night of that first day of sight, I should not be able to sleep, so full would be my mind of the memories of the day!

"Don't tell anyone," Jennifer said. "It's a secret."
Reagan sighed (叹气). Jennifer wanted everything to be a secret. But Reagan was getting tired of keeping secrets, especially from her best friend Lena.
"Hey, guys," Lena said, walking over and sitting next to Reagan and Jennifer at the table. "What are you talking about?"
"Well—" Reagan just began to say.
"Reagan! You can't tell her," Jennifer said. "It's a secret. You can't tell other people's secrets."
"But she should know this. It's about—"
Jennifer narrowed her eyes at Reagan. "If you can't keep a secret, I'll have to find another friend who can."
"But this isn't really a secret," Reagan said.
"Anything can be a secret. It's more fun that way."
"Well, it's not fun for the people who don't know the secret." Lena got up and walked away.
Reagan stood up. "I'll keep your secret because I'm your friend," she told Jennifer, "but I don't want to know any more secrets. Don't tell me anything I can't tell Lena. She's one of my best friends, and I don't like making her feel left out." Reagan turned and walked off after Lena.
"Wait!" Jennifer said. "You can tell Lena that tryouts (选拔) for the play are being moved up to Thursday. She should know because she's going to the tryouts, too."
Reagan smiled. "Secrets are fine sometimes. But Lena's our friend. You shouldn't want to keep things from her."
"You're right," Jennifer said. "Let's go to find her and tell her about tryouts right now."

After several days of sleeping in his car, he walked nervously into a restaurant and ordered a big breakfast. After finishing it, he told the owner that he had lost his wallet. The owner walked behind the young man’s seat and picked up 20 dollars on the floor.
“Sir, you must have dropped this,” the owner said.
The young man couldn't believe his luck! He quickly paid for the breakfast and left.
On the way out of town, he began thinking this,“Maybe nobody dropped the money at all. That’s because the owner knew I was in trouble and he helped me.” From then on, the young man promised himself that he would try to help others if he was able to one day.
Now the young man lives near Kansas City. Each year, he donates(捐款)thousands of dollars. He is known as the“Secret Santa”,because at Christmas time each year, he gives money to homeless people on streets. Last year, he gave more than 50000 dollars away in Kansas City and New York City.
“I am very happy that I can help those people because they really need our help. I will continue giving my help to them. I once received help from others, too. So I understand the meaning when you help others.” he said.

You may have heard of it from many hit US TV shows and films. It’s usually in the middle of March, when characters on shows like Gossip Girl get a week off from classes, go to the beach and throw big parties. It’s spring break—or “party time”!
Unlike our semester (学期), which starts in late February or early March this year. American schools, ranging from kindergartens to college, give students one to two weeks off school.
College students often take planes to places like Florida or Cancun, Mexico. They relax on the beach, enjoy cold drinks and get a tan (晒黑的肤色).
Younger kids take trips with their parents, visiting a new state or even a new country. Sometimes teachers lead overseas trips for groups of students. On a ten-day trip, for example, students may go on a tour through Spain, France, and Italy, which gives them a great chance to see different parts of the world.
Having a “staycation”, which means being a tourist in your own city, is another popular trend. You can visit local art galleries, museums or have a big meal in a nice restaurant.
For those who are not in the mood to go out, spring break is a good time to catch up with hit TV series or play video games.
There are also students who want a different kind of spring break experience. Instead of playing, they choose to do community service, help with disaster-hit areas and do other volunteering work.
No matter how they’ve spent the break, one thing is for true--students return to school feeling refreshed (恢复活力的) and ready to finish the school year.

Life as a student here is never boring with sports and dancing. Fun activities make US high school life more enjoyable. Studying in the US, I have seen many fun examples of US high school culture.
Every Friday, our school’s football team plays against other schools’ football teams, either held at our school or at another school nearby. Students buy tickets to support their school team or to just hang out with friends.
New term begins in September. Students have homecoming, that is going back to school. Homecoming dances are hosted the next month. During the homecoming week, students dress up according to the school’s theme. Some themes are about pajama(睡衣)day, twin day, dress-like-our younger-self day and others. Then on the Saturday of homecoming week, there is the homecoming dance! Students wear dress shirts, bow ties or dance dresses.
Junior 3 and Senior 3 students also have a prom. I have never seen to prom before, but I’ve learned that prom is a much more formal(正式的)dance to celebrate graduation. For homecoming, girls usually wear knee-length dresses. But for prom, most girls will go for a longer and more formal dress.
My high school experience in the US so far has been meaningful and enjoyable. It helps me make myself a better person.

Many Chinese who travel to the US find that though they have studied English for years, they have to “re-learn” it as soon as they arrive.
Words that we learned in English classes are not pronounced the same way here. To truly be part of the “melting pot”, fluency(流利) in English is not enough. You need an accent(口音) to stand out.
When I first came to the US for graduate school, I was a nervous foreigner. I felt so out of place that I wanted to hide everything about me that was “different”. To talk like an American became one of my goals.
During my first term as a teaching assistant(TA), my students complained they could not understand me. I learned later from a study that this complaint was common among US students with an international TA. It is called the “Oh, no!” syndrome (情绪、举动), “Oh, no! Not another international TA, and not that accent again!’’
So I imitated(模仿) the way native speakers talk over time, I made such good progress that American friends started to think highly of my English as having “almost no accent’’. I took this as a sign of my success. Ever since, people have often thought of me as someone from many places: the Midwest, the West Coast, China, Japan, South Korea. Most often, people think I am from California.
Suddenly, conformity (一致) was no longer a praise(表扬): If I talk like an American, am I still Chinese? If I lose my Chinese accent, do I also lose my cultural identity(身份)? Am I denying(否认) my past by being lost in a new culture?
Now I realize that a person’s accent is a ever-lasting record of their past cultural experience and it is a mark of one’s experience.
As a fourth-year student in the US, I am no longer a nervous foreigner. My nervousness has been replaced by a wish to hold on to my cultural origins. Now I add some Chinese “accent” on purpose when I speak. I do not wish to speak “perfect” English because I am proud of who I am.
