Final exams are just around the comer. Liu Haoxuan,14, who studies at Beijing Dayu School, is quite busy. However, he still had to find time to practice his spoken English. That’s because he had to take a new English listening and speaking test.

Liu is not alone. This is a new test for all students who are taking senior high school entrance exams (中考)in Beijing. Junior 3 students have to take an English listening and speaking test that counts for 40 points on their full English exam. The test is taken on a computer. They can take the test twice---once in December and again in March---to try to get the highest score possible. The test was just introduced last year.

During the 30-minute test, students have to fill in blanks, answer questions and retell stories after listening to different materials. “It pushes us to speak. Though it was hard at the beginning, it's a good thing,” Liu said. He got a low score when he first took it last semester. But he kept working hard in order to improve his pronunciation and other skills. He practiced speaking in front of a mirror every day. Later, he got a score of 39 on the test.

Liu Tianyou,14, from Beijing Yuying Middle School, has his own way to prepare for the spoken English test. He uses apps to take practice tests every day. “The apps will score your performance so that you can improve accordingly,” he said. “Also, the practice tests help me learn to take notes properly. 【推荐1】Athletics vs. Gardening

The students of Southside School were asked to give their opinions about whether the school should run an athletic program or start a vegetable garden.

An athletic program is hatch better than gardening. How are we ever going to win anything at the Inter-School Athletics without proper training? At the moment, we only do athletics for one tam and the teachers train us. We need experts(专家)to teach us things like throwing and high jump.

I know lots of kids say they're tot interested in competitions, but that's because they've never won anything. If they got better training and started winning things, they'd soon change their minds.

People always say kids don't get enough exercise. Just because you do gardening outdoors doesn't make it exercise, so I don't sec how it matters.
Athletics is much better for fitness and lots of kids can have a go at the same time. I don't   think there would be enough jobs for everyone in a garden.
In fact, I think a garden is a really bad idea. I don't know why we're even considering it.
Liz, Grade 8
I think a vegetable garden is a great idea. We already do hours of sport, including athletics. And not everyone likes sport.
Gardening is a great way to get exercise without worrying about whether you're any good at it, or whether you're going to win. And you really do gel exercise when you garden. There's digging, weeding and watering Even picking things can be hard work – pumpkins aren't light you know!
There are lots of kids around here who don't have gardens so they can’t grow things even they want to. If you really want to do more sport, you can join a club.
And think about it: What helps you to be good at sport? You need to eat lots of fruit and vegetables. If we learn to cook all the things we grow, the garden will keep us all fit and healthy and then we’ll be better at sport.
                                                                                             Sam, Grade 8

1. Which of these points do Liz and Sam both make?
A.Kids should take exercise.B.Kids should eat vegetables.
C.Kids should try to win more.D.Kids should be outside more.
2. What is one reason Liz gives for saying "a garden is a really bad idea"?
A.Some students don't like getting dirty.
B.Some students don't enjoy being outside.
C.Some students already know how to garden.
D.Some students may have no chance to garden.
3. Why does Sam say, "And think about it.: what helps you to be good at sport?"
A.To change the subject.B.To introduce his next reason.
C.To support Liz's idea.D.To find an answer to the question.

Complain(抱怨) Politely

Not everything goes the way you want it to. You may go to a restaurant and order a nice meal. But your order is wrong or not cooked properly. You may buy a product that breaks the next day.

1    However, if you speak angrily to people, they will become defensive(自卫的). Then they are less likely to help you. A more effective (有效的)way to get what you want is to stay calm.

Use polite language and a friendly tone of voice. Start with phrases such as, " I'm sorry to bother you, but. "or" Excuse me, but could you.?" For example, "I'm sorry to bother you, but I ordered potato soup, not vegetable, "Phrasing your complaint as a question also helps.     2    Could you help me? I just bought this phone case yesterday, but it's cracked.”

3    There is no faster way to make someone defensive than by blaming them. Use

the phrase.“ I know this isn't your fault, but…”or“There has been a misunderstanding.”     4    Blaming people isn’t as important as getting a problem fixed!

There are honest mistakes, but at times someone may try to take advantage of you. In that case, don’t say "Hey! You're trying to cheat me! "Instead, use the phrase, "I understood that.." For example. "I understood that the service charge was included in the price. Then give the person a chance to answer.

If you don't get what you want with polite conversation, ask to speak to a manager or supervisor.     5    .

A.When trying to comet a problem, don’t blame (责备)the person you re talking to.
B.People like to be asked rather than told!
C.But usually, you'll find that polite words and a smile will resolve a situation.
D.These kinds of experiences make you want to complain.
E.These phrases let people know you are only angry at the situation

【推荐3】Today’s teens have grown up online. They socialize online. They do homework online. And surely they get their news online. But because they are so comfortable with the Internet, they seldom question the news stories online and pass along to their friends.

Now William Colglazier, a history teacher at a high school in America, is teaching his students how to think critically about online information and recognize a “fake news” story. His idea came from a study on people’s online reasoning at Stanford University. The study found that young people lack ability to reason about the information on the Internet. Most middle school students in the study could not tell the difference between an advertisement and a news story, and high school and college students fully trusted the websites ending in “org”.

The good news is that, according to Colglazier, once teens realize they’ve been duped, they have strong will to tell truth from lies. “But they need some pointers on how to find dependable and persuasive evidence and how to recognize when others use poor argumentation,” he said. Some of the pointers that Colglazier offers his students include moving off the site to find more information about the site and the writer’s motivations, looking past the first page of results in a Google search and looking at the second or third page, and going beyond the “About Us” page on a website to find out more about the organization behind the news story.

Colglazier has tips for parents as well. He says it’s a good idea for parents to be “friends” with their kids on social media to see what stories they are sharing. He also suggests parents watch their teens as they search for something online and ask questions like “Why did you click on that?” and “Do you trust this information?” Those questions can lead kids to form habits of thinking critically about online information.

Colglazier shared some of his course with other teens in Teen Vogue, a famous magazine. He hopes more kids would take away some knowledge about thinking critically when they read news online. “The Internet is both beautiful and ugly,” he said. “If people cannot tell real news from fake news, the results can be frightening.”
