On October 28, 2018, a serious traffic accident happened in Chongqing. A bus and a red car collided(碰撞) at the second bridge of the Yangtze River. The bus ran out of control on the bridge and crashed into the river. All 15 passengers and the driver in the bus were killed.
At the beginning of the accident, many people doubted that the red car was going the wrong way, causing the bus to fall into the river. Others guessed that the accident was caused by the driver’s sudden illness. However, a few days later, based on the black box saved from the scene of the accident, together with the traffic records, the police announced the truth.
Before the bus reached the bridge, a female passenger had a quarrel with the bus driver because she missed her station, but the driver refused to stop the bus. So they got into a fight. Because the speed was very high, the bus was out of control.
People from all walks of life paid more attention to the accident and expressed their opinions. Some people think the woman passenger made the trouble without reason. She was regarded as the chief culprit(罪魁祸首). She shouldn’t argue with the driver. Some people think drivers shouldn’t fight with passengers and they should keep calm and put the passengers’ safety first at any time. As for the other passengers, they failed to dissuade(劝阻) them in time. Maybe they didn’t know the result would be so serious.
Nowadays, hundreds of people die or get injured(受伤) on the roads every year in China. In my opinion, all of us should follow the rules and put the safety in our heart.

What are you going to do if you are in a burning house? How will you escape? Do you know how to save yourself? Please read the following passage.
Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save you life. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways and fire escapes, but not lifts.
From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible, learn the best way of leaving by windows with the least chance of serious injury.
The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average(平均高度的) person, hanging by the finger-tips will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed. Or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may leaked(渗) into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement(水泥) might end in injury. Bushes(灌木丛) and grass can help to break a fall.

Every year many people get hurt or die when they are crossing the road. Most of them are old people and children.
How can we lessen(减少)traffic accidents? All of us must follow the traffic rules.
For the drivers, they shouldn’t drive too fast. It will be very difficult to stop the cars in a very short time if they run very fast.
For the pedestrians (行人), it’s very important to be careful when they are walking on the road. So, when we cross the road, we must walk along the pavements. We must stop and look at both sides before crossing the road. Look left first, next look right, then look left again. Only when we are sure that the road is clear, we can cross it.
The right way to cross the road is to walk fast. It’s not safe to run. If people run across the road, they may fall down.
Teens should get ready to help old people and children to cross the road, because old people have bad sight and hearing and children forget to look and listen when they play in the street. Besides, old people had better not go often during the rush hours.

Liu Siyuan from Beijing 101 Middle School noticed the problems and tried to solve them with a guide book. The 16-year-old set up a volunteer group called Silver Hair. Its seven members spent about half a year writing a 300-page book called May I Show You How to use Smart Phones.
The group members made a survey of more than 1, 000 old people and talked with many in nursing homes (养老院) and found out what the old people care about with smart phones. “How to use Wechat” was on the top of the list as this app covers many parts of life such as chatting, money transfers (转账) and health code (健康码) checking. These make up one chapter (章节) of the book. The other nine chapters include the basic functions (功能) of phones, online shopping, using online maps and more. To make the book easier for older readers, Liu also made the pages light yellow and the words big.
“Many old people preferred not to use smart phones at first, but the guide book helped us make them more willing to learn,” said Liu. “And they can read the book any time they need, just like using a dictionary.”
The Silver Hair members have printed out 500 copies with their own money and handed them all out for free. They will soon start working on the second edition (版本) which includes more guidance such as hospital registration (挂号) and photo editing (编辑). They also hope for monetary support from the public so they can print more copies and help more people.

For years, the Blackwell’s on the Island had been the best place for Soapy to spend the cold winter.
And now the time was to come, so Soapy had planned his “trip” to the Island. There were many easy ways of doing this. The most pleasant was to have a big meal at some expensive restaurant, and then, having no money to pay, he would be handed over to a policeman. But as Soapy set foot in the restaurant, the waiter drove him out because of his dressing.
Then at the Sixth Avenue, Soapy took a stone and threw it at the glass of a shop. He waited to be arrested. However, the policeman paid no attention to him.
Soapy entered another restaurant successfully. After a satisfying meal, Soapy told the waiter he was penniless, hoping the police would come. Unluckily, he was just thrown out rudely.
Soapy forced himself to molest a young lady. He even tried to step into a store and go off with a man’s umbrella. How he hoped that he could be taken away by the policeman nearby. But things always went against his will.
On the sidewalk, Soapy began to shout drunken at the top of his voice. Still, the policeman gave no care to him. He didn’t get any punishment.
Would never a policeman lay hands on him? Soapy was hopeless. The Island seemed an unreachable dream. Then, on an unusually quiet corner, Soapy came to an old church. The sweet anthem from the church caught and held him. It caused a sudden and wonderful change in his soul: he would make a man of himself again. Tomorrow he would go and find work. He would be somebody in the world. He would—Soapy felt a hand on his arm. He looked quickly around into the face of a policeman.
“What are you doing here?” asked the policeman.
“Nothing.” said Soapy.
“Then come along.” said the policeman.
“Three months at the Blackwell’s.” said the Magistrate in the Police Court the next morning.
