Different colours have different senses
There are many colours in the nature. But do you know if a colour has weight?I think you'll say "no". But I am afraid you are wrong. If you don't believe, you may do a small experiment(实验).
First, put two objects with the same weight into two boxes. Then cover the box. Third, wrap(包裹)one box with a red piece of paper, the other with a white piece of paper. OK. Now hold the boxes with your hand one by one. It is certain that you will think the red one is a little heavier.
Why do you think so?A scientist found that different colours have different weights in a man's mind. So he did some tests and at last he got the result. That is to say, every colour has its own weight in our mind and their order is the same. The heaviest colour is red, then blue, green, orange, yellow and white.
The scientist told us that colours also have smell. Can you smell the colour?Of course not. Then why did the scientist say so?That is because every colour stands for a kind of light with a certain wavelength(波长). It reaches our brain through sense organs(感觉器官).
According to this discovery, scientists say that people accept the colours they like, and refuse the colours they hate. So your body and mind will be healthy by using the colours you like. Or you'll be nervous or even get ill. For example,if you stay in a room with red windows, wallpapers and furniture for two hours, you'll feel you have been there for four hours. But if the room is blue, you'll feel you have been there fur only an hour. Another example,if a person walks out of a red room and into a blue room, his temperature will fall. That means our body temperature will change with different colours.

Do some colors make you feel calm while others give you energy? Scientists have studied the connection between color and mood (心情) for a long time. Many believe that color can influence our moods.
Warm, bright colors such as yellow and red are positive colors. They can give people a pleasant feeling. Cool colors such as blue, purple, and green are relaxing colors. They help people experience calm feelings.

Grey may be the popular decor(装饰) color of the moment, but painting your bedroom grey actually stops you from falling asleep easily. Besides, reds, greens and purples can prevent a peaceful night’s sleep according to Natalie Armstrong, a sleep expert at mattress(床垫)company Sealy. She gives reasons.
★ Grey is usually used to represent(代表) sadness and loneliness, and it can send sad messages to our brain.
★ Too bright colors can put your brain into a state of high excitement, which can last long after you’ve turned off the light.
So what color is good for sleep? Blue. 如果你正打算粉刷卧室的墙,蓝色是最好的选择。Blue is easily received by certain cells(细胞)in your eyes. The cells then send a message directly to your brain, telling that you’re in a peaceful environment where you can fall asleep easily.
As we all know, smart phones can stand in the way of sweet dreams. Holding your smart phone or watching your favourite TV show in bed can put you in another “blue”environment. However, these blue lights are harmful, because they disturb(扰乱)our regular sleep-wake cycle and hurt our eyes.
Anyway, the color of bedroom walls is not the only and main reason to influence our sleep, but it really makes a difference. It is important to develop a good and healthy sleeping habit.

Scientists from Cambridge University said that they can teach sheep to tell familiar (熟悉的)human faces from other unfamiliar ones.
Before testing, scientists let the sheep take a look at pictures of four famous people, such as Barack Obama and British actress Emma Watson. Then the sheep went into a room with two computer screens. Each screen showed a human face. One screen showed a famous person and the other screen showed a common person。The sheep would always walk to the screen with the face of famous persons.
Then, the scientists wanted to know the sheep's ability to recognize(认出) them from a photo. They put their own photos on screens along with some pictures of unfamiliar(不熟悉的) faces. Not surprisingly, the sheep could tell the scientists from others.
After noticing the animals' ability to recognize people, scientists gave them a new job. They wanted to see the farm animals' ability to recognize the same person if the picture only showed half of the person's face or just one side of a person. The animals were still able to recognize them, though they were a little slower to recognize the pictures than before.
The results show that the animals' face-recognition( 面部识别) abilities are similar to those of monkeys and humans. Face recognition is a difficult job. But sheep have big brains(大脑). When they see other sheep, they can also recognize one another.
The scientists said it might be interesting in the future 10 find out whether sheep can recognize different human facial expressions(表情)

Most of us use the alarm clock to wake up at the right time for school or work. We look at our watches to know the right time for the bus or train. However, there is also a right time to eat, sleep, exercise, and take medicine. We can’t look at a clock for the right time for these activities. We must listen to the biological clock inside our bodies, which is a natural system in living things that controls regular physical activities such as sleeping.
Barbara exercised every morning. She woke up at 6:00 a. m. She ran about two miles before she went to work. But Barbara’s legs and back started to hurt. She did some exercise before she ran. But her legs and back still hurt. She ran more slowly, but the pain didn’t stop. Barbara talked to her doctor. The doctor said, “Don’t run in the morning. Try to exercise later in the day because that is the time when your body is at the right temperature for exercise after work.” She followed the doctor’s advice and her legs and back didn’t hurt any more.
Today, doctors are learning more about “chronobiology”. It means the study of biological clocks. They are learning about the importance of time for our bodies. For example, it is best for people to go to sleep on time every night and to eat only when they’re hungry. Also, doctors discovered that some illnesses, such as heart attacks(心脏病发作), happen most often in the morning. This information tells them that the best time for the person with a heart attack to take heart medication may be at night. When patients take heart medication at night, they may prevent a heart attack in the morning.
Because of the great importance of the biological clock, many doctors believe chronobiology can help us live healthier lives. Maybe it’s time for us to listen to the clock inside our bodies.

In recent times, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted (破坏) the age-old habit of shaking hands. ①It is most widely used as a greeting, but when did shaking hands become the standard greeting?
The handshake dates all the way back to the 9th century BC (公元前). King Shalmanesar III ruled over Assyria, an empire (帝国) of the ancient Middle East. Archaeologists (考古学家) found a throne base from that time. It shows two people holding hands. In the 5th century BC, this was a symbol of peace, showing that neither person carried a weapon (武器). The handshake also makes an appearance in Homer’s (荷马的) ancient poem, the Iliad. In it, two characters shook each other’s hands.
However, these handshakes were not used as greetings. The earliest reference (谈及,提到) to a handshake greeting is in the 16th century novels by French writer Francois Rabelais, says Dutch sociologist Herman Roodenburg.
Even so, the most widely-accepted idea about the handshake is that it came from a group called the Quakers, who were committed (致力于) to equality and peace. As the movement spread, so did the handshake, eventually becoming a standard among the working class in the mid-1700s.
However, this was not the case everywhere, according to Roodenburg. Some French people described it as a vulgar (平民) English greeting, so many kept “labise”, the traditional peck (轻吻) on two cheeks. Because of the COVID-19, in many countries, people have started touching elbows to greet each other instead of shaking hands, as this is believed to be safer.

You may know that hurricanes (飓风) are tropical (热带的) storms that can lead to terrible waves, wind and rain. They happen during “Hurricane Season”, which is from June 1st until November 30th in the Atlantic Ocean and from May 15th until November 30th in the Pacific Ocean.
A storm continues through four different periods before it is actually considered a hurricane. First is a tropical disturbance, which has thunderstorms. Next is a tropical depression, which is similar to a tropical disturbance, but has winds between 23 and 39 miles per hour. A tropical storm is the next level, which has stronger wind speeds between 40 and 73 miles per hour. When winds reach 74 miles per hour, the storm is called a hurricane.
When a hurricane makes landfall, it can be very dangerous along coastlines because ocean waters rush onto land. When this is joined with heavy rain, there can be awful floods. As a hurricane crosses over land, it begins to reduce in strength. At this point, a hurricane can still cause a lot of damage (危害) because of high winds, rain, and flooding.
The centre of a hurricane is called the eye. While most of a hurricane has dangerously strong winds, the eye is actually a calm area in the storm. When the eye of a hurricane passes over land, people might think that it’s over, but before long the wind and rain increase again as the second part of the hurricane moves through.
Scientists use satellite images to predict (预测) where and when a hurricane will come on shore. During a hurricane watch, there is the possibility that a hurricane will make landfall within 36 hours, and people are advised to prepare for a possible storm. When a hurricane warning is announced, a hurricane is surely on the way, and will make landfall within 24 hours. People are warned to leave their homes and travel to a safe place.

If you like unusual places, you should visit the Hebrides Islands. Not many people live on these islands in the northwest of Scotland. The land is not good for farming. They’re not for everyone. Even summer days are cool and often windy. The water is too cold for swimming. There are only a few trees and green fields. But there is beauty in this place. From the beach you can often see all the ways to the rocky hills. From the hills you can see far out to other islands and the open ocean. The colors, too, are special. Blue is everywhere. It’s in the sky and in the ocean. In the spring there is also green in the hills. In the summer and winter the hills are more purple.
On these islands you can forget about the rest of the world. The evenings are quiet. The restaurants close early, and there isn’t any nightlife. Visitors stay at a guest house or a Bed. This is the best way to learn about life on the islands. The islanders are often friendly, and they like to talk.

People in China have been paying cash for things for thousands of years. However, with the popularity of mobile payments, China is becoming a cashless society. Years ago, when travelling abroad, you must take some cards with lots of money. However, now you can easily pay anything you want with your smart phone by scanning (扫描) the seller's QR code(二维码). Cashless payment has grown into a lifestyle choice for Chinese, even you can scan the seller's QR code to buy some vegetables. Perhaps everyone in the future will have a pocket without any cash.
As you know, we don't have to worry about losing our money or getting robbed(抢劫) when we are out. But the cashless payment is not perfect. On the one hand, you may notice that the QR code is everywhere in China. In the street, some advertisements on the wall say that if you scan their QR codes, you will get crazy prizes. But do you really believe them? On the other hand, you must type your password before using WeChat. But what if someone knows your password and steal your money in your WeChat, and then steal your private information, such as your name, phone number and even ID number?
So it is a great challenge for the popular cashless society in China.
