Nowadays many new and useful inventions have come into use. If I were a scientist, I would have my own invention——a magic door, a door that can take me to every part of the world, just like Doraemon's magic door.

Since our life is getting busier and busier, my magic door is really needed. The population of the world is rising day by day,and the number of cars used is getting larger. Therefore, the traffic jam becomes a big problem to people in both poor and developed countries. Moreover,by using a large number of cars, people have to face another problem:the pollution of air. All those reasons lead to the need for such an invention as a magic door. It can take the place of the traditional ways of transportation.

Magic doors have many advantages. Firstly, you can go wherever you want in a minute. Just open the door and go through it,you can stand in another place. Two parts of the door are two parts of the world. Thus, magic doors can meet the need for discovering new places for people. Secondly, magic doors sometimes can even make people safe. Magic doors can be used in everyday life. If you dropped into a river accidentally, for example, people would go there immediately to help you get out of danger by using magic doors.

All in all, people can benefit(得益)a lot from magic doors. If magic doors were invented and came into use widely, not just imagination, there would be a big change in our life!

When computer servers (服务器) operate a large program, they can get very hot. Cooling the servers can cost a lot. So some scientists want to know what would happen if the heat created by the servers could be used.

Data (数据) centres of large Internet companies such as Google and Microsoft have

thousands of computer servers. As these servers deal with information, they produce lots of heat, so they need huge cooling systems. These systems send the heat into the air.

A company in Holland (荷兰) thinks paying for electricity to operate (使运行) the servers

and then paying again to cool them are a waste of energy. So it developed a device (装置) called the e-Radiator. It contains a computer server connected to the Internet. By placing these servers inside people’s homes instead of out-the-way data centres, the company hopes to heat homes from excess computer heat, while lowering costs for the computer users.

Five homeowners in Holland are testing the heating system in their homes. Jan Visser is one of them. He says the amount of heat produced by the e-Radiator depends on the work being done by the computer server. “It’s a great help for my family,” he says.

The company says e-Radiators produce heat temperatures of up to 55℃. It says the system

could save its users about $440 in heating costs a year.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了一位印度裔的美国女孩Vijay很小的时候就开发了一款帮助妹妹学习的APP的故事,以此告诉我们想要取得成功,我们要有热情。

【推荐2】Indian-origin Anvitha Vijay has given a new meaning to the phrase “age is just a number”; she has proved that achievements and knowledge follow passion and not just age and experience.

Vijay, who lives with her parents in Melbourne, Australia, at the age of seven realized that her piggy bank did not have enough money to hire a developer to make her an app, so she decided to teach herself how to code. With the help of YouTube videos, the young techie learned to code. For one entire year, she watched multiple coding tutorials on the web and became a programmer herself.

Vijay’s inspiration for developing the apps was her little sister, who was still learning to talk. Therefore, Vijay developed an educational app for children that were her sister’s age. The app is called Smartkins, which uses about 100 sounds and flashcards of different animals that help children learn and identify. Later, Vijay developed a similar iOS app for children to identify and learn colors. Each app has been downloaded thousands of times.

Anvitha’s skills won her a scholarship to attend a big tech conference hosted by Apple in San Francisco, California. There, she got tips from the pros. She went to workshops where she learned about the latest software for app building.

All that training led to an idea for a third app. This one, called GoalsHi, is to inspire kids to practice good habits. Users are rewarded for achieving goals, such as eating their vegetables or practicing the piano. Anvitha says the rewards are like getting a sticker for a job well done.

Anvitha’s goal is to continue creating technology that helps kids learn while having fun. But even more important to her is that the world sees the power of technology in kids’ hands. “The more training we get in tech at an early age,” she says, “the better chance we have of becoming creativity champions who will one day change the world.”

文章大意:本文主要介绍了成都市七中的学生设计了四个兼具教育性和趣味性的游戏。
【推荐3】阅读短文,根据要求完成下面小题。

Playing computer games is usually seen as a waste of time. However, what if you could actually learn something from a game? Students from Chengdu No.7 Middle School once designed four games that are both educational and fun.

Four groups of students were given the task of creating educational games freely. “After some discussion, we realized that we could use the knowledge we learned in physics and chemistry to design the game,” said Zhao Zian, leader of the group that made the game Arrow Round-the-World. The setting is an island on which players go on an adventure, performing tasks that include knowledge of many fields.

Another game called YOUNIVERSE (年轻宇宙) gives players a special task: overcoming the devils (魔鬼) inside their minds. They came up with three pairs of elements to show different attitudes when they face pressure. The idea is to find a balance between their stress at present and their ambition (雄心) for the future.

The other two groups have a bigger picture: environment and geography. Cover the Nest is a story about our future world where the environment is damaged (毁坏的) and society is unstable (不稳定的). Traveling through rich and poor neighborhoods, the player can feel the damage human beings have done to Earth. Back to Earth takes the player to different cultures in China.

“We just want to show that study can be fun!” said 15-year-old group leader Li Yunhao.
