The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games were more than a sporting event.     1     They are helping athletes (运动员) become “faster, higher, stronger” and offering you a great game-watching experience with the support of 5G. Let’s look at some technologies behind the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games. The National Speed Skating Oval(国家速滑馆)is said to have “the fastest ice”, as twelve new Olympic records and one world record were set there, including Chinese speed skater Gao Tingyu’s Olympic record of 34.32 seconds in the men’s 500 meters.

2     If the ice surface temperature doesn’t change much, the ice will stay even flatter (平滑的). Liquid carbon dioxide (液体二氧化碳) is put under the ice to keep the temperature changes on the ice surface within half a degree.     3

In events like freestyle skiing and ski jumping, the direction and speed of the wind can have a great influence on an athlete’s performance. Some events only last a few seconds and the wind is changing all the time. A research team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences(中国科学院) developed a system to measure wind.     4     It allows athletes and coaches to “see” wind directly with real-time data(数据)on their pads(便携式电脑)and decide when and where to jump.

During the speed skating race, athletes can reach speeds of up to 18 meters per second. To catch every exciting moment of the competition, we have used Lie Bao for the event. Lie Bao is a 4K high-definition (高清) camera system developed by China Media (媒体的) Group.     5     It closely follows the athletes’ movements and catches different scenes during speed skating, according to the report.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了2022年北京冬奥会吉祥物冰墩墩的设计过程。

【推荐3】What’s the most popular Winter Olympics design with kids and teenagers? It must be the mascot(吉祥物). Bing Dwen Dwen, a panda in an ice shell, was chosen as the mascot for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics in 2019. Now it has been made into fluffy(毛绒绒的)toys and plastic(塑料的)models, as well as printed on notebooks, badges(徽章)and bags.

“The International Olympic Committee has found that successful mascots had to be cuddly(令人想拥抱的)and liked by 9-year-old children,” said Cao Xue, the chief(首席)designer of Bing Dwen Dwen. “And I knew Bing Dwen Dwen would be.” Cao’s team was from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. They once made three designs, and Cao asked his 9-year-old son to choose his favorite. “At his first glance(一瞥), he chose Bing Dwen Dwen which was the final mascot,” Cao noted. According to Cao, Bing Dwen Dwen was chosen from 5,816 designs from 38 countries and regions(地区). The idea first came from the traditional Chinese snack bingtanghulu—the syrup(糖浆)coat later turned into the ice shell in his design. However a simple snack cannot stand for(代表)a country by itself. Cao’s team then tried many plants and animals, finally going with a panda. “What can better stand for China than our national treasure(宝藏)?” said Cao, “We don’t need to explain anything to have it understood across different cultures.”

They faced a problem, though, there were already too many cartoon pandas. Cao’s team looked at panda designs from around the world. They wanted to make sure their panda was different. For this reason, Cao decide it should be a baby panda. This is how they got Bing Dwen Dwen’s body shape. Its body has the same length(长度)as its head.

Bing Dwen Dwen wears a full-body “shell” made of ice. It looks like an astronaut in a space suit, showing a perfect blend(混合)of winter sports and modern technology. Bing Dwen Dwen waves(挥舞)its left hand to say hello. It has two red hearts on its palms(手掌), showing kindness and love. A series of colored floating lines around its head look like the tracks on an ice rink(冰场). They refer to “Ice Ribbon(冰丝带)”—stand for Beijing’s National Speed Skating. The colorful lines also refer to fast 5G signals.

1. What is Bing Dwen Dwen?
A.A toy popular with children.
B.An adult panda.
C.A mascot for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
D.A 9-year-old toy panda.
2. Colored floating lines around Bing Dwen Dwen’s head refer to ________.
A.Its helmet(头盔)
B.bingtanghulu—the syrup(糖浆)coat
C.national treasure
D.an ice rink(冰场)
3. Why did Cao Xue decide Bing Dwen Dwen for the final mascot? Which is not the suitable answer?
A.Only because Cao’s 9-year-old son likes it.
B.No other animals can stand for China than pandas.
C.Bing Dwen Dwen is different from other cartoon pandas.
D.Bing Dwen Dwen is a mascot that make people want to be cuddly(令人想拥抱的)and liked by 9-year-old children.
4. What’s the main idea of the passage?

B.The introduction of Bing Dwen Dwen.
