So in 2008, Zhang started a free school for poor girls. Since then, Zhang has been busy asking for donations to provide money for the school. Zhang was born in 1964 in the village of Mawang, Xi’an, Shaanxi. His father died early and it was hard for his mother to raise (养育) him by herself. Zhang wanted to make money so that his mother could live comfortably. But it was hard for him because he could not see at all. In 1984, Zhang decided to raise chickens and sell eggs to support (赡养) his mother.

Every night, Zhang spends about 3 hours preparing eggs for sale the next day. Every morning, he gets up at 5 am and takes a bus to a market street over 30 kilometres away from home to sell eggs.

Zhang meets many difficulties in his life, but he is thankful to people around him. He said, “I don’t have much to give back to others. When I die, I will donate (捐献) my body to the hospital.”

When others asked Zhang, “Would you still come to this life if you knew there would be all these difficulties?” He smiled and said, “Of course I would! I accept what is mine.”

The American Chinese takeout meal may also come with fortune (幸运) cookies. These are thin, hollow cookies that have a small piece of paper inside. Your “fortune” is written on the paper, along with your “lucky numbers”. You’ll never get these cookies when eating takeout in China.

Of course, I enjoy authentic (正宗的) Chinese food very much. But there is something about American Chinese dishes, like General Tso’s chicken, Grab Wontons and chow mein, which I really miss. When I go home for holiday, my family is always surprised when I ask them to order American Chinese takeout. But to me, it is a special treat indeed.
