Oink! The Year of the Pig is coming. Many people believe that pigs are naturally fat, lazy and dirty. But are any of those things true?
Pigs are fat. They eat a lot. But they are useful to us. We get more than just pork from pigs. We can use their skin to make shoes. We can use their hair to make brushes. Pigs also provide us with materials for medicine.
People sometimes say: "You are as stupid as a pig.” But pigs are not stupid. In fact, pigs are one of the 10 smartest animals. They have a good memory and can tell different shapes apart. Many experts think pigs are easier to train than dogs or cats. In France, people teach pigs to find truffles which are a kind of plant with special smell. With their good sense of smell, pigs can find truffles even faster than dogs.
When you see pigs, they usually in dirty water or mud. That's because pigs have no sweat glands (汗腺). On hot days, they have to cool themselves in water or mud. This keeps insects off of them as well. Mud can also protect their skin from sunburns.
The wrong opinions about pigs often make us dislike the animal. For example, if someone eats a lot, we say that they have "pigged out". If someone's room is very messy, we might say his or her room looks like a place where pigs live.
But people in ancient China really liked pigs. People thought the pig's big head was a symbol of good luck. If someone had a round and chubby(胖乎乎的)face, he or she was thought to be blessed(有福气的).People also believed the animal stood for wealth. Piggy banks, a symbol of this. Most children have a piggy bank that they can use to save money.

The character, Hua Mulan, introduces Chinese culture to the world in Disney’s 1998 cartoon movie and its new live-action (真人拍摄的) movie in 2018. She becomes a world star.
In the movie, Mulan dresses herself as a boy and takes her father’s place to fight in the army. She wins the respect of the whole nation and turns into a great soldier.
According to Alex Xin, an art researcher at Peking University, Mulan in the western world has changed over the past twenty years, from a heroine in westerners’ eyes to an authentic (地道的) Chinese girl. “When you check the 1998 cartoon, Mulan was described as a fighter for women’s rights, but it missed the point, as the original (最初的) story was mainly about traditional family value. I’m glad that the new film has included this important point, showing that after twenty years. Westerners now have a better understanding of Chinese culture,” Alex Xin said.
As one of the oldest countries in the world, China has a long history and wonderful culture. Chinese culture is deep and difficult to understand for foreigners. But by introducing traditional Chinese culture in popular styles such as film, it is much easier for foreigners to understand China.

Tai chi is not just a way to exercise — it’s a way to live.
XU WENBO/VCG
Tai chi has always been a symbol of Chinese culture and is becoming popular around the world. According to Xinhua, it is practiced by over 100 million people in more than 150 countries. It was recently added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List (非物质文化遗产名录). One thing that makes tai chi popular is its health benefits. As you move, you breathe deeply and natutally, focusing your attention — just as in some kinds of meditation (冥想) — on your body. This helps you relax and find peace.
According to Harvard Health, tai chi is suitable for almost anyone because its movements are never forced — it is all gain (好处) and no pain.
What makes tai chi even more interesting might be the ideas behind it. The term “tai chi” comes from Taoism, which means that inaction (无为), as opposite to action, is the solution to problems. That’s why tai chi movements are slow and soft. It is not used to fight an enemy. It is used to protect yourself. That doesn’t mean it is weak though. Tai chi is to use softness to beat hardness.
Many movements in tai chi have names that are related to animals. This suggests that people came up with them by studying how animals move. Tai chi shows how ancient Chinese people saw the world. After a dark night, the sun will rise. Leaves fall in autumn but grow in spring. Everything keeps changing — that’s how we should see the world.

Facebook is an American social media company with more than 2.8 billion users. Recently, it took a new name: Meta.
Along with the new name is the company’s plan to build a “metaverse”. So what is a metaverse? Simply put (简单地说), it is not a real world. People wear VR headsets (头戴设备) to visit it. It will feel real because the technology can simulate (模拟), hearing, touch and even smell.
What can you do inside of the metaverse? Perhaps anything you want! For example, you can meet other people wherever they are. Your position will no longer matter. People would be connected at all times. So, if you can’t find any friends to play basketball with, don’t worry. Just jump into the metaverse and join a game.
The metaverse can also create new places. Are you tired of visiting the same beach every year? Forget Sanya. Meet your friends in the metaverse and go to a beach on the moon—or anywhere else you can imagine. You can fly over the sand or dive into the sea.
Some people may argue that these experiences are not real. Perhaps, the metaverse will change our idea of reality (现实) itself.
