Every year since 1996, on the last Monday of the last week in March, the National Day of Education on the Safety of Elementary and Middle School Students is held. This year it falls on March 28. It offers us a chance to learn more about school safety.
A survey from People’s Daily shows that the worst accidents were a result of stampedes (踩踏), fires and traffic.
Experts suggest that right safety measures (措施) could avoid 80 percent of these accidents, China Education Daily reported.
When facing an accident, the first and most important rule is to stay calm. But different accidents mean different ways of dealing with them.
A stampede happens in a place where a large crowd is gathered. When students around you begin to push, stand still and try to hold onto something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves. If you fall down in a moving crowd, cover your head with both hands. Lean to one side, curl your body and bend your legs.
When there’s a fire, you can’t get outside by stairs. You can get to the fire escape through a fire exit door or a window. Stay calm and follow teachers’ instructions. Leave the classroom and use a piece of wet cloth to cover your mouth and nose so that you don’t breathe in smoke.
If you take a school bus on your way home or to school, remember to wear your seatbelt and don’t walk around when the bus is moving. If you walk to school or go by bike, follow traffic rules. Wait for the green traffic light, and look left and right for cars before you cross the road.

Studying animal dreams is even harder: dogs can’t tell us what makes them whine(哭啼)or run while asleep. However, scientists are trying their best to learn more about animal dreamers, and the good news is that they have discovered more than ever before.
Cats are some of the first animals researchers turn to. It is found that cats would move as if awake, hunting, jumping and defending themselves against imaginary threats(威胁). Scientists call this ‘paradoxical sleep’. It is the time when the body is still but the mind remains fully active. It also provides a window into what is happening in the cats’ sleeping brains.
Things seem to be different in rats’ dreams. Research has shown that after rats run a maze(迷宫)during the day, they can rerun the same route while asleep. This suggests that some parts of the animal brains can make and store memories when awake. Later when asleep, these memories get brought up again.
Zebra finches, a kind of songbirds, also dream to replay their waking experience. While the birds sleep, their brain reproduces the song they heard and sang that day, suggesting the birds remember and practice songs in their sleep. Many scientists suppose finches have a similar sleep structure as humans.
Today, scientists would not be surprised at the dreams found in animals. They are getting closer to a scientific study of those dreams, and the discoveries tell us that humans are not the only species capable of remembering and learning.

My example certainly isn’t a one-off situation. Researchers across all fields of science have had similar experiences. But I feel plant scientists are forced to go through such situations especially regularly.
Many people ask me why I am not doing more “useful” studies—on things like cancer (癌症) or dementia. My answer to their questions is simple. Plant science can help feed the world. Millions of people worldwide die of hunger every year. It’s not that we aren’t producing enough food; it’s just that we are wasting a lot of it. Plant science can help to reduce this waste. One example is apples that brown slower. They are less likely to be thrown away. Plants can also help us protect our environment. They are important in our fight against climate change. Moreover, discoveries in plant science have also paved the way for studies in many other areas of science. In short, plant science isn’t useless at all.
At an event at a local secondary school, I was surprised to learn that none of the teenagers aged from 14 to 15 could recognize the rice plant. This perhaps shows the level of interest in plants among today’s young people. It’s very worrying. If students aren’t interested in plants, they are unlikely to study them in the future. They will never know how important plant science is.
Schools could and should do more to change their ideas. The Rocket Science campaign (活动) was a great example. It saw six hundred thousand children become space biologists. The pupils sowed and grew seeds that later spent six months on the International Space Station. Such events are able to drum up students’ interest in plant science. Unfortunately, there are too few of them.
Plant science is much more useful than many people think. I hope that more people, especially young students, will take a second look at it.
