A bowl of instant noodles
Mr Black is a worker aged forty-six who lives with his little son, because his wife died a few years ago. He loves his son so much that he would like to give all of his to him.
One day, he had to go to another city on business. He had no time to eat breakfast with his son in order to catch the train. He was so worried about his son that he gave him a call many times all the way, asking if he had already had breakfast. The son told him not to worry and everything went well at home.
In the evening, when Mr Black went back home in a hurry, the son was asleep on the bed. He was very tired and hungry. He just wanted to eat something. To his surprise, when he entered his son’s room to see him, he found some instant noodles (泡面) under the quilt with the over turned (倾倒的) bowl. Mr Black was so angry that he shouted at the son. He slapped the son heavily with his hand, pointing at the dirty bed and the overturned bowl. The boy cried sadly and said, “I kept waiting for you to come back. To keep the noodles warm, I put the bowl under the quilt…”
Putting the son in the arms, he said gently, “Dear, I’m sorry I’m sure it’s the most delicious bowl of instant noodles in the world. Thank you.”

Once a traveller wanted to go across a desert. He had walked in the desert for three days without any water. He was exhausted (精疲力尽的) from walking. When he felt hopeless, he suddenly found a small house. He pulled his tired body inside. This was a small airless house and in the corner he discovered a water pump (抽水机).
He was so excited and went forward to draw (抽取) water, but no water came out no matter how hard he tried. Too tired to do anything more, he fell to the ground. Then he saw a small bottle. Don’t forget, before you leave, refill the bottle with water!” He opened the bottle and found it was filled with water! He was so happy.
At that moment he thought, “It might be a little selfish (自私的), but as long as I drink the water in the bottle, I can be sure to leave this room alive! However, if I do as the note says and pour the only water into the pump and no water comes out, I will die of thirst. Should I take the risk or not?” It was five minutes later that he chose to pour the only water into the pump and began to draw water. After a minute, water started to come out! He made the right choice!

When you your toe is stepped on and it hurts, that’s sudden anger. It will disappear in a few minutes. The second is called righteous (正当的) anger. Your toe hasn’t been stepped on, but maybe someone sent an email about your work performance that was not true. Righteous anger may last days or weeks.
With sudden anger, there’s some science. If you’re angry about stepping on your toe, it’s because your body warns you about the danger. Righteous anger has something to do with your success and work performance. It can make you difficult to be around. The best way to solve anger is choosing to have empathy (同理心).
Try to think in the other’s shoes. Maybe they were totally wrong. However, there is usually something proper about their behavior. Be careful before you take actions in anger and send an email to argue for yourself. Instead, start with empathy—what was the opinion of your friends, why do they send such an email? When you have empathy, you avoid seeing only how you’ve been hurt. It helps you resolve arguments and deal with anger.
At last, that works well because you can take yourself out of the situation. It also means you are ready to reach an agreement. You become known as a person who has dealt with anger, not someone who can do nothing but get angry.

And this time, the third grandson would join in the competition. Besides, the little grandson cried sadly and said, “Grandma, you should love me best!”
Hearing this, the grandma was calm. It seemed that she had been waiting for the chance to educate her grandsons. She smiled and said, “Grandma loves all of you so much. Each of you is special to me.” Then she continued, “You always play balloons (气球) together with great pleasure. So you must know that the balloon can be blown up again and again, and there is still some room for more air. Grandma’s heart is just like the balloon. There is always room for enough love for all of you.” It seemed that everybody was taught a good lesson and there was no case of jealousy (嫉妒) any more.
