3 . Have you ever done voluntary work? Today I want to share Sun Ke’s story with you. Sun Ke and other 16 students from Beijing University spent one year as teaching volunteers in the country’s underdeveloped(欠发达) western areas. That was the 13th such team that the university had sent student volunteers to teach for one year in Tibet(西藏) , Qinghai, Yunnan, Xinjiang, Ningxia and Shanxi since 1999.
Sun Ke volunteered as a geography teacher at a middle school in Tibet. One day, he asked each of the students to buy a map for geography studies, but only three students bought the map because they were poor.
“I have heard stories about poverty(贫穷) of kids in these areas on TV before, but I was really sad when facing such a fact myself.” he said.
Sun decided to buy the maps for the students with his own money. “When I walked into the classroom with the maps, they broke into tears, and so did I.” Sun said.
The volunteers learnt a lot through working in the western areas. “We realize the value of our work and feel the responsibility.” they said, “We believe no matter how hard it will be, we will surely do it better. ”

Help in the garden
Where can you see some of the most beautiful gardens in the world? The UK!
Every spring, there is the Chelsea Flower Show in London. It is one of the most popular garden and flower shows in the world. People show off their creativity with trees and flowers.
But you don’t have to be an expert to garden. Anyone can do it. This is why in Britain helping with the gardening is popular with kids.
As a child my dad was the “master” of the garden. He often asked me to help him with the outdoor work. He would mow the lawn as I watered the trees and plants.
Gardening is more interesting than indoor housework. It is relaxing as you hear the birds sing. It is also great to see flowers grow from a small seed into a big plant. This teaches kids patience and dedication: two useful skills for life.

Help needed in the library The library really needs some more volunteer helpers this term. Ideally we would love some parents, or other family members (grandparents maybe?) to come and give a hand for 30—40 minutes on Tuesday or Thursday. We aren’t picky about what time you come, and we will explain what you need to do. Most parents find our tasks easy and quite relaxing once they get the hang of it. If you think you can help us, please call us at 93067128 or email at tracey.burbidge@ststephens.wa.edu.au. |
