3 . Last year, I went to Beijing Qizhi Special Education School for community service (社区服务). Before we took the bus, my friend asked me a question: “Why are you here?” I did not know how to answer the question. The school was not far from my school, but it looked like it was in a different world. A group of children were waiting for us. A boy walked toward me. He held my hands and pulled me to the ground. I kissed the earth and tasted nature. I could not understand what he was doing at first, so I was very angry. Though I was very angry, I controlled my anger.

A teacher stopped this awkward (尴尬的) silence when she shouted at the boy. “What are you doing right here, right now?” she said. “You will never see your mom again if you keep doing this. Now, say sorry!” “Sorry,” he cried fearfully and nervously. I said nothing, but I realized something about this child. After lunch I asked the teacher for information about the child’s parents.

She said that the child was very different from other students because of an illness. His family could not afford to treat him. He needed the kindness of his family, but they had abandoned him. So he depended on the support from the teachers and community service workers like us.

I suddenly realized I could answer the question my friend asked me at the beginning of the day.

Community service workers help others and make everyone feel better. There are so many people in the world that need help. Playing with lonely children may not make a big difference. But it can light a corner in the children’s hearts, making them know they are loved by people.

Zhang Guimei, the principal of Huaping High School for Girls, has been given the title “Role Model of the Times” for helping girls from poor families. Here is the moving story of Ms. Zhang.

Zhang moved to Lijiang at the age of 17 to teach in the middle school in Huaping County. Once, she got badly ill but had no money for the treatment (治疗). With the help of the people there, she was able to get the treatment. “From then on, I told myself that I must do something for those people who helped me”, Zhang said.

Slowly, a dream of setting up a free high school for girls in Huaping County appeared in Zhang’s heart. From the year of 2002, she began a six-year journey to look for funds (资金). In 2008, Zhang finally set up Huaping High School for Girls at the foot of the Shizi Mountain in Huaping. The school was the first high school in the country to provide free education for girls who have been unable to continue their studies after completing their nine years of education.

Thanks to her efforts, more than 1,800 girls from poor families have entered universities through her education until now. Zhang has been helping to improve the area as a whole. Influenced by her, many of her students have chosen to teach in poor areas. Now, with Zhang having got the honorary title, the education for girls from poor areas will receive more attention.

Many teenagers want to look cool. But not everyone can afford to keep up with the changing fashion trends (潮流). Chloe Murray,     1     eighth-grader at Jefferson Middle School in the US, realized this problem and started a charitable clothes closet (慈善衣橱)     2     (help) her peers.

Her school supported the idea too. The school let her use     3     (room) for the project. So far, more than half of Murray’s classmates     4     (be) members of the project.

When the charitable clothes closet, Chloe’s Closet, opened, it is full     5     trendy clothes for girls and boys to help students look their best. Confidence is     6     (true) a big problem in middle school, especially when it comes to clothing.

You may wonder where the clothes are from. Many people from the school’s community and neighboring schools give away used and new clothes. The clothes closet is only open after school. Students can “buy” these clothes by making “money” when     7     hand in their schoolwork on time or take part in a school activity. In March this year, a large number of clothes     8     (sell) to students. For most children, these clothes are     9     (valuable) ones that they have ever had.

“    10     children meet their basic needs, such as clothing, they will be better able to focus on the learning material,” said Shannon Arko, a language teacher at the school, about the closet. “Feeling good about yourself translates into a better learning experience overall.”

10 . David went to a shop to buy fruits. He asked about the price of the fruits. The shopkeeper replied that the pear was ¥8 and the apple was ¥10 per kilo. At the same time, a woman came into the shop and asked the same question. The shopkeeper answered, “The pear is ¥4 and the apple is ¥6 per kilo.” David couldn’t believe his ears and looked at the shopkeeper. The shopkeeper noticed this immediately and let him wait for a while. The woman took the fruits, paid for them and left happily.

After the woman left, the shopkeeper looked toward David and said, “I didn’t want to cheat you.” He continued after a stop, “The woman lives in my neighborhood. She is a poor mother of four. I have tried many times to help her but she refuses to take any help from anyone in our neighborhood. Then I think of this way to help her. Whenever she comes, I sell her fruits at a low price. This way, she won’t feel that she is being helped or depending on others. This is the only way I can offer my help.”

David was moved after learning the story. He hugged the shopkeeper and bought fruits without hesitation (犹豫). More importantly, he learned that if we really want to help others who need help, we will always find a proper way.
