1 . When Will Harris was in the fifth grade, he received bus safety training at school. Local bus drivers taught students about the buses’ two-way radios and showed the students how to use them in emergency (紧急) situations. Will used what he learned to help an injured bus driver get quick medical treatment. People in his hometown now call the 11-year-old a hero for his brave actions.
Will was taking the bus to school one morning. Like all the other students on the bus, Will was listening to music on his phone. He had to stay for 10 minutes or so before he could get off the bus.
But then he heard a loud noise and looked up to see what happened. He saw that the bus driver was no longer in the driver’s seat. She had passed out and slumped over (瘫倒) on the bus stairs. Will left his seat, took the two-way radios and reported that the driver was hurt. The radios on each bus let Will’s friends hear him report the emergency. Soon, another bus driver and an ambulance (救护车) arrived to help.
When they got there, the bus driver was awake and sitting up. They sent the driver to the hospital. Will and everyone else on the bus went to class as usual.
Will’s brave actions got a lot of attention. A local TV station even interviewed him, although he didn’t want to be in the spotlight.

4 . Volunteering allows us to connect with our community and make it a better place. In Indonesia (印度尼西亚), I did a lot of volunteer work to help children, the elderly and the environment.
Last year, I volunteered at a recycling (回收) center in Indonesia with my friends. As soon as we arrived, we saw huge piles of plastic (塑料) bottles on the ground. I wondered, “What are we going to do with those?”
A group of people from the recycling center welcomed us. One person said that bottles and caps (瓶盖) were made of different materials and had different uses. He said, “Today, you are going to remove (除去) the plastic covers and caps from all of these plastic bottles.” I put on my mask and gloves, sat down on a stool (凳子) and started grabbing plastic bottles and removing their plastic covers with a cutting tool.
There were straws (吸管) and trash (垃圾) inside the bottles, so I had to remove these items. Some of my friends were not comfortable doing this work and neither was I, but it was important work and was part of a larger effort to improve the environment. After we finished removing the covers and caps from the plastic bottles, we crushed (压碎) all the plastic bottles and put them all in a larger box.
After a long day, we finally finished our work. Though it was a simple job, it would have a lasting influence (影响) on our lives and our environment. That’s what volunteering is about. How meaningful it is!

What power(力量) does music have? Band of Hope is a student band in the US. They play music for young patients(病人) at a children’s hospital.
Students at Hopewell Junior High School started the band about six months ago. The band’s 27 members meet once a week for a two-hour practice after school.
On May 27, they played their sixth concert for 20 children in hospital. The band members also told stories for the patients and brought small instruments(乐器) for them to play.
Liam Watters, 13, plays the baritone(男中音) in the band. During one concert, he learned that one of the patients liked to listen to the singing, so he and a few other band members went back to the patient’s room and sang to him. “That was really cool,” Liam said. “They had big smiles on their faces.”
“We’re hoping that we can give more concerts here,” said Kerry Wilson, the head of the band. “It helps them to feel happy and enjoy being a part of our community(社区).”

8 . Kendall Harvey has an unusual hobby. He used to be a worker in a bike factory and retired (退休) six years ago. Harvey began working on motors and wheels, building himself a machine that he and his wife used to travel to the mountains. One day, while having a meal at a local restaurant, he met another dad out with his small son, who was disabled. He listened as the boy expressed a wish for a bike, like his friends. Harvey went home and started working, and soon he made a motorized (机动的) bike.
Since then, Harvey has made the dreams of 140 other children come true. Thanks to a donation from WalMart, Harvey’s garage is filled with bicycles of all sizes, just waiting for him to rebuild them for a child. Through friends and relatives he hears about kids who can’t see or use their arms and legs because of injury (伤口) or birth defect (出生缺陷). Harvey meets the kids, talks to them about the kind of bike they’d like, then takes their sizes. He picks out a suitable bike, and adds extra wheels, a sidecar for dolls, or a small radio. Within a few weeks, he has made a child’s dream come true. They are independent because they have a bike.
Children of all ages use Harvey’s bikes. Several are in their twenties or even thirties physically, but mentally (心理上) they are five, six or seven. The price Harvey asks for all this is the pictures with them when they receive their machines, the hugs and kisses they give him, and the joy he sees on their faces as they operate the bike all by themselves. For him, that is enough.

9 . This is such a heart-warming piece of news in the cold winter. Some days ago, the temperature was only -6℃ in Kaifeng, Henan. Someone ordered 50 cups of warm porridge (粥) through Meituan App and noted “Please give the porridge to those cleaners who are clearing snow on the road nearby and those delivery (递送) men who are delivering food.” When the porridge shop owner received the order, he was moved by the note and provided 60 cups.
The story didn’t end here. As soon as the food delivery man got the big order, he shared it with his workmates so that they could also get paid. Finally, Meituan returned the money to the porridge buyer, Mr. Zhang and gave him a reward of ¥500. Although he had to raise his newborn baby and pay for his house every month, Mr. Zhang said he would surely continue delivering love.
The kind help also encouraged many other citizens in Kaifeng. This summer, volunteers are sending cool drinks every day.
Similar stories have happened in many other places in China. Outdoor workers in different cities are able to enjoy free and caring help. Lots of “love posts” are providing “coolness” in hot summer and “warmth” in cold winter. Just as a citizen of Kaifeng said, “I feel deeply moved and warm in my heart.”
In fact, we get love and give love every day. Love makes our life better and more beautiful.
