4 . After 11-year-old Sophia watched a video about the harm to sea turtles caused by pollution from plastic straws(吸管), she got angry. She began to help clean up plastic pollution in our oceans and inspire other kids to join the battle. “Kids have a voice and can make a big difference,” she says.
Last summer, she and her friend Liam attended a camp in New Orleans for young “ocean heroes”. Those are kids working to protect the ocean and educate others about the problem of pollution. Before they went, Sophia and Liam raised money so more kids could attend the camp. They held a dance party and raised about $5,000. Sophia hopes to raise even more money for next year.
She’s also planning a TV show in which she’d travel the world to meet other ocean heroes and spread the word about their work. “We don’t want our world to be a world of plastic,” she says. “We want it to be a world of green.”

6 . Do you often help the people who are in need? If everyone does it, it will make a big difference to the world.
One day two boys walked along the road to school. They saw an old woman carrying a large basket of pears. She looked very tired. They went up and said “Let’s help you.”
“Thank you,” said the woman. “That’s very kind of you.” Then she told them that she wanted to go to the market to sell the pears. So the boys decided to lift the basket together. They walked slowly with the heavy basket but they were happy.
The other day I saw a little girl pick up a banana peel (皮). She threw it into the dustbin (垃圾箱). “I hope nobody would throw that on the street,” she said. “Someone may slip (滑倒) and fall.”
Perhaps some people may say that these are not great things. That’s right. But almost all great things are made up of such small things. We shouldn’t wait for the time to do great things. We should begin with these little things that are full of love.

Hailey Fort has a friend. His name is Edward. “He’s really nice, ” she said. Edward is not a typical friend. He became homeless after he lost his job at a supermarket. And Hailey is not a typical girl.
Hailey met Edward three years ago. She thought it would be nice to buy the homeless man a sandwich. She and her mom did so. Later, Hailey thought: Why give one person a sandwich when you can feed many more with a garden? So Hailey planted a garden. However, she didn’t stop there. The little girl started building mobile shelters for Edward and other homeless people in her neighborhood. “It just doesn’t seem right that there are homeless people, ” she said. “I think everyone should have a place to live.”
The shelters come complete with windows, a door and solar panels (太阳能电池板) for electricity. Hailey does most of the work on her own. With support from a charity, she has built a dozen shelters. Hailey plans to keep building things for the homeless. She hopes other people will join her. “Helping the poor may not be so hard, ” she said. “Everybody can do something to help out.”
