2 . What would you do if you felt anxious (焦虑的)? Would you feel better if someone else could share his or her experiences with you? In the United States, two teenage girls set up a mental health camp called “Healing (治愈) Hearts” to help people deal with anxiety.
The idea of creating the camp came from Dinah Martinez, 17, and her schoolmate Janet Martinez, 18. Both girls suffered from anxiety. Dinah Martinez always did well in school. “But then I just started to collapse (崩溃)” Dinah Martinez said. She stopped talking to her friends, stopped going to school for three weeks and stayed at home.
Janet Martinez was anxious in elementary school. Things got even worse in junior high. “It was a lot of pressure (压力) I put on myself. I would wake up in the morning and it was like my heart was racing,” she said. The girls’ camp idea got support from Girls Leading Our World (GLOW) in the US. The organization awarded them $5,000 to put on the camp for other teenage girls.
The “Healing Hearts” camp was created to “help deal with anxiety, especially with girls in high school because that’s when they are the most vulnerable (脆弱的),” Janet Martinez said.
On the first day of the camp, 10 girls were there. Experts at the camp talked about anxiety. They helped girls who were experiencing anxiety. The girls learned how to calm themselves when they are anxious. They learned about calming methods like deep breathing and guided mediation (调节). “It’s good to know that someone else is going through the same thing as me and we can both help each other out.” Dinah Martinez said.

4 . When we talk about “good people”, who comes to mind? Many Chinese might think of Lei Feng. In China, the young soldier is a symbol of the giving spirit. Someone who acts selflessly may be called “a living Lei Feng”. Born to a countryside family in Hunan in 1940, Lei grew up poor. He became a soldier in 1960. But just two years later, the young man died after being hit on the head by a falling pole (杆子).
During his short life, he has been remembered as a national hero. Lei gave away his life to help others. He carried bags for the elder people and gave food to children. He once gave all the money he had to the sick parents of a friend.
Lei is not a superman, but a role model for every common person. Being kind to others is something that everyone should try to do. Lei once wrote in his diary that he wanted to be a “screw (螺丝钉) that never rusts (生锈)”. This shows how humble (谦逊的) he was, though he did so many good things. According to Chairman Mao Zedong, Lei did more than just these good things. He served(服务) people wholeheartedly all his life.

This past summer, when most Chinese college students wondered where to travel, Wang Chaodi jumped into one of the hottest ways of travel—voluntourism.
Wang is a 22-year-old law student at Yunnan University. He spent three weeks taking part in community service(社区服务)in Nairobi, Kenya. At the same time, he enjoyed himself in African culture. “I want to go to the farthest end of the Earth to help people who are most in need,” he said.
On weekdays, Wang taught elementary courses at a poor orphanage(孤儿院). It was only 300 square meters large. And the students there had only an old textbook to study from. During weekends, he visited tourist sites including Masai Mara National Reserve and Amboseli Park, where he could watch amazing animals.
Voluntourism, also known as volunteer tourism, connects volunteer work with travel. Now, it is getting more and more popular among young Chinese, especially college students.
Last year, when Ciweishixi (a Shenzhen based company) carried out its South Asia voluntourism program, more than 250,000 college students signed up. According to Li Yaping, the director of the program, 3,000 young people took the trips.
“Young people today want a richer experience,” Li said. “Instead of taking regular ways such as practicing at big companies, an increasing number of them want to try unusual ways to connect with the world.”
Voluntourism doesn’t have to be international. “We hope young people can devote(付出)more attention to what’s around them before going abroad(出国),” Li added. “They can get to know more about the countryside, gain a deeper understanding of China and find future voluntourism opportunities(机会)in our own country.”

8 . Aisha lived far from her school. So she always took a bus to school with her best friend, Allen. Another two of her classmates were on the same bus.
Every day the four children waited for their school bus for fifteen minutes, on the same dirty street. There were many old bottles, parts of old bikes, and empty cans everywhere around the bus stop. The trees on the street had no leaves and seemed to be dead, and there weren’t any flowers on both sides of the street. The street looked dirty and ugly.
One Friday, Aisha looked at the dirty street and decided to do something about it. The next Monday, she took a bag and collected some of the old bottles for recycling. On Tuesday, it took her another ten minutes to pick up old bottles. Her best friend saw it and collected empty cans and put them in a different bag to recycle. On Wednesday, all the other children joined them in collecting. The street became clean!
Though the street looked cleaner but it still looked gray. So the next day the girls planted some flowers along the road. They watered them, and watered the trees there, too. Even though the children only had ten minutes a day to do so, that was enough.
Half a year later, this street became a beautiful street with many flowers and green trees. Maybe a big difference only needed ten minutes a day. All of us should spend ten minutes a day helping our cities become cleaner and greener.
