2 . Irwin Corey was a famous American film actor. But today, the story you will read is not about his achievements in film but about his begging(乞讨) life.
He became a beggar once and often walked in the streets of Manhattan. He wore old and broken clothes. He was very thin and seemed to be weak, looking like a poor homeless old man.
He begged for money in a special way. He only asked for some change from passing drivers, and then he gave the driver a free copy of the newspaper he bought. Each time he asked for money, he was always smiling and also told jokes to the drivers. The drivers thought him kind and humorous, so they never let him go empty-handed.
Although all the money he begged was coins, he still made lots of money at the end of the day. Irwin Corey had been begging for money for many years. However, he didn’t spend any of the money he had asked for. Every time the money was up to a certain amount, he donated it to a charity which bought medical supplies for Cuban children. For 17 years, he donated all his hard-earned money to the charity.
He was not short of money. He lived in a $3.5 million big house. He was not a beggar, either. “On the one hand, I just want to help people in need. On the other hand, begging can make me feel not lonely, as my wife had passed away.” he said.

3 . Zhang Lin is a Junior 3 student in Shijiazhuang, Hebei. Earlier this month, Zhang and his classmates stood on the street with a box asking people for donations(捐款). Later they gave the money they got to the poor students in their school.
Many Chinese students raise money to help people in need. Most of the time, they hold a box and ask for donations on the street or in the park. Or they sell things like old books and CDs. Those students have done a great job so far. The money helps the students in poor areas like Yunnan and Gansu with new clothes, pens and pencils.
Teenagers in the US make donations, too. But they raise money in a different way—they raise money by doing something for others. For example, they sell homemade food or play musical concerts in their neighborhood to raise money.
“Chinese students like to wait for people to donate, or sell things that they buy with their parents’ money,” says Guo Daoshun, an expert(专家).“While US kids get donations and give people something useful in return.”
He says Chinese teenagers should learn to raise money in the US kids’ ways. “That way, they can show their talents and practice communication. More importantly, they can learn every coin counts(有价值). They have to work hard to get a donation.”

For many people in North America, the last week was the coldest of the year. To help some poor people keep warm, some kind people tied(系) scarves to trees in big cities for people in need.
“I AM NOT LOST!” read a note on a scarf tied to a tree in Wilmington, “If you need this to stay warm, please take it. It is yours. Be warm, and do something to help someone else today if you can.”
The member of a teenage soccer team put many of the scarves around Wilmington. They bought around 300 scarves for poor persons and left them on the Bloomsday runner statues(雕塑) in Riverfront Park with notes like the one above.
A group of villagers also left their scarves all over the cities. “The scarves get right to the people who want them,” said Wendy Grahl, one of the villagers, “If you’re poor and it’s 30 below, a scarf is going to be welcome.”
“I’ve seen a lot of bad things happen, but I’ve seen a lot of good people that care for others,” said Ed, a homeless man who took one of the team’s scarves.

7 . Alice Lee is a high school student studying at a private school. She is doing some voluntary work at an afterschool program to help students from poor families.
On the first day of her work, she noticed that many kids were lining up for free sandwiches and fruit in the school cafeteria(餐厅). She was surprised. One of the organizers explains that many of these students don’t get enough to eat at home. So a school lunch or an afterschool meal might be the most food they would get all the day. She has also been told that some hungry kids can receive free lunches, but others are only allowed reduced price meals, and those students’ families have to pay for the part of their food.
Lee was shocked. She decided to offer help to those who are suffering from hunger. “I want other kids to understand that if you see a problem, you don’t have to wait to be an adult to fix it,” says Lee. She and a group of friends are using their programing skill to create an app called Food for Thought, which will allow parents, students, and even kindhearted strangers to donate money to a lunch account(账户) for students in need at a nearby school. To receive financial(经济的) help, a family will need only a letter of recommendation from a school headmaster, and no one else has to know.
“I want to make all the app users feel no shame in using,” says Lee. She hopes to test the app in a school this fall.

10 . “But I feel good doing this!” the little boy’s voice rang in my ears when I entered the mall. He stood raising money for cancer research. In the cold wind, he pulled his hat down over his ears. He warmed one hand in his pocket and held a list with the other hand. I noticed him greeting the people passing by without gloves on his hands.
I checked my purse but I didn’t find any change. I was always ready to give money because I wished cancer could be cured (治愈) one day.” I’ll bring you some money when I returned,” I promised the little boy.” Thank you!” he smiled and he seemed almost frozen in the cold air. I suggested he come inside the mall, but he said, “The guard there said no one is allowed to raise money for charities (慈善机构) in the mall. But I feel good doing this here. It’s OK.”
I did my shopping and thought about buying something for him. Finally, I bought a pair of gloves, brown ones. The cashier felt curious when I repeated the boy’s words “But I feel good doing this!”
The boy still stood where he had been. I offered some money to him and filled in the list that he handed to me. Then he told me that his best friend George had leukemia (白血病). He did this in order to help him out of trouble.
With tears full of my eyes, I put the gloves that I bought for him into his hands.
“Will the cancer research give you something to thank you for doing this?”
“Oh yes!” the boy said and his eyes lit up with joy. “It sure does! Now I can stand here much longer than I expected!”
“What do you receive then?” I asked. He answered with a smile, “I get another new, empty list.”
